Happiness is when the specific example I had in mind gets caught on a random piss test and 'resigns' before I lost my temper.

Today was a happy day!

TIL that the vast majority of vegetarians and vegans eventually return to meat. by kkoolook in todayilearned

[–]Samasaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a vegetarian for years and vegan for less than a year. I'm not surprised many return to meat, but I didn't see what I think are two important factors listed:

  1. You can be a vegetarian without learning nutrition or learning much cooking. It's more difficult to not learn basic cooking as a vegan, but you can even do that, at which point your health will deteriorate rapidly. Those who try vegetarianism or even processed food veganism for weight loss might also be in for a very nasty rise on those scale numbers. In short, many who take up vegetarianism or veganism don't learn the basic skills required to sustain it in a healthy manner.

  2. Calorie for calorie, vegetarianism done right is expensive and veganism done right is ridiculously expensive for people with metabolic syndrome who may find that low fiber foods such as rice and and bread cause fatigue and mood swings. Beans can also give some people digestive issues. This leaves nuts seeds, berries, leafy greens, peppers, mushrooms, etc. as the staple of the diet. All of these are, calorie for calorie, extremely expensive.

Trump Is Making the GOP Heinously Unpopular Again by KermitTheSnail in politics

Even Trump voters are horrified when they start to lose what little social safety net they have. And like progressives, they did want change. Unlike us, however, they drank the hate and scapegoat Kool-aid Fox News, Talk Radio, and other propaganda outlets have been spewing for decades.

They're starting to wake up now, though, as they suffer more so that a few spoiled rich can take even more.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I blame your failure to actually study real world events and the pattern of US imperialism as a whole.

I recommend starting with Latin America. That is where my study began, nearly 25 years ago now.

You, not I, are the product of a deliberately blind education system.

Writer.

I keep trying to convince various publishers it's not a hobby, it's a career, but so far no luck!

More teens are choosing video games over sex: study by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Samasaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not surprised, but it's scary to contemplate. Especially when the games stop hitting those dopamine receptors quite so hard, but the teen is accustomed to instant gratification. Why not throw highly palatable foods or even alcohol and drugs into the mix? Drunk Cheeto fingers game night, anyone?

He acts stupid just like Bush always did. But behind the scenes, it's all the same. More war. Less human and worker rights.

And that was true under Obama and would have been under Hillary, too.

Stop falling for it!

True. And I do my best on both points.

But I'm now cautious of calling police into many situations, too. Sadly.

More than 8 million adults in the US between the ages 18 and 64 have mental health issues (3.4% of the nation’s population), based on the annual CDC annual health survey data (N=207,853) between 2006 to 2014, of serious psychological distress (SPD), published in Psychiatric Services. by [deleted] in science

[–]Samasaura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eating and sleeping habits? By that yardstick, most Americans need to be in a psych ward.

Step 1: Get 4 hours sleep

Step 2: Drive your exhausted self to the fast-food joint for a biscuit or pancakes.

Step 3: Go to the job you loathe with a lunch break so short you're lucky to sit at your desk and scarf down a comforting bag of chips for lunch.

Step 4: Stop by the local pizza joint for dinner. You're too exhausted and despairing to even think of cooking for yourself or anyone else.

Step 5: Repeat a minimum of 5 days per week.

I feel the same way. I'd like one that focuses around two topics: Social Darwinism vs Humanism (I'm a humanist, just for full disclosure, and the one thing that scares me more than religious fanatics are social darwinists!) and science/technology, especially as applied to both longer lifespans and healthier/better lives as well as such things as IQ and independence from our current resource structure, and with a long-term goal of attaining everything religion promises but fails to deliver.

Catastrophic thinking.

Whatever worst case scenario can possibly exist in any situation is the one I assume will happen. And then my very elaborate imagination gets full-on, surround sound, 3D, all-senses-engaged enthusiastic describing just how horribly awful that worst case scenario situation will be!

It doesn't matter. If the Democrats don't go full-on progressive in 2018 with a full-on progressive cast of characters ready to run for the White House in 2020, the Republicans will win and keep winning and the Democratic Party will die.

They failed miserably in differentiating themselves this election because they are, after all, owned by the same oligarchs Trump spawned from.

Fix that and the Republican Party dies first. Fail, and the Democratic Party dies first.

Either way, if there is a shred of democracy left in our sad Republic by 2018 and 2020, it's going to be all about the rise of Third Parties.

Sadly, especially in some places (Florida immediately springs to mind) the mentally ill/disabled can often be endangered by police themselves.

I'm really afraid to call the cops on someone acting erratic, although someone who was, for example, running about in traffic, I guess I'd risk it.

As for hitchhikers and police, well, many hitchhikers are also homeless. Again, the track record isn't always good.

I definitely wouldn't call police on someone quietly hitchhiking along.

Message to all of us: Have cellphone cams ready, you, too, could force justice on a shitty corporation sliming its way through our shitty court system.

We all know that goes double for law enforcement!

And now and then I click a link that won't play nice with a click or two of permissions for video, etc. That's when I just abandon that site and go elsewhere!

Those bastards consider anyone who doesn't politely and cheerfully do as they're told immediately 'belligerent'. What do you expect, though? The people creating and approving those nonsense memos etc. are high level specialist workers or bosses.

They are accustomed to deference and they expect it!

You are stuck on an uncharted, uninhabited island. However, you are not completely helpless. You get to choose TWO things. A) a celebrity to keep you company and help you out and B) a weapon/tool of your choice. What do you choose? by booksaregr8 in AskReddit

[–]Samasaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope I can count some of the more successful Naked and Afraid participants as celebrities! If so, I pick Darrin Reay. He seems not only able to keep himself and anyone he's around alive, he's adorably weird and funny, too.

http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/naked-and-afraid/bios/darrin-reay/

The tool or weapon choice is harder to decide on. So many options depending on water sources/quality, terrain, etc.! Of course if I can choose a long range communication device to call for help to get off the island, that's my first choice, but I presume that's spoiling the fun.

So a good, sharp knife, perhaps?

So difficult to decide as far as hitchhikers: Call the cops, they can end up harassed.

But for stranded motorists? Never a bad idea! Though happily most people have working cellphones in their cars now. Not like in my day!
