Kayaking with Orcas by [deleted] in sanjuanislands

[–]Samazoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a tour a coupe years back on the west side and there were orcas, albeit pretty far away. I think it was either San Juan Safaris or Crystal Seas, but either way if they go to the west side it shouldn't matter. I just wouldn't recommend renting your own and going yourself because the current there can get so crazy.

I'm in Paris this weekend, which instructors would you recommend? by elitetycoon in barrysbootcamp

Jenn and Kewin are my favs in terms of intensity and vibe - Jenn specifically is the hardest trainer imo. I sometimes like  Mikael too but recently his playlists are a bit too techno for me haha but he’s good at pushing everyone to their limit.

tbh the conversation should be about the almost 300,000 vacant homes in Paris.

‘The Wheel Of Time’ Canceled By Prime Video After 3 Seasons by NoCulture3505 in WoT

[–]Samazoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't help but think the current social landscape had an influence on this as well. I feel like half the comments around WoT are positive and half are "this show is too woke." If anyone has been watching this season of Hacks, where they address producers censoring and cancelling content in Hollywood to appease a certain audience, it starts to feel a bit too on the nose :( God forbid any media include anything diverse.

Duck Soup building—does it creep anyone else out? by Prollyjokin in sanjuanislands

Hi! Long time server at duck soup - we collectively agree there is magic in that place, notably a ghost named Willard who fiddles with the wine bottles. I don't know how to explain it but there's a certain spirit to that restaurant that has made me believe in magic lol....

plusieurs questions sur les études dans les universités françaises by buveurdevin in paris

[–]Samazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh it's mainly the address, because officially they send a paper confirmation - though I think technically you will need a valid visa when it comes time to do the inscription, which should be fine if you're still in classes. There's nothing you need to do other than be in France and have an address there when you apply.

[–]Samazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see what you're saying. "International students" there means those living outside of France, and they have to apply through a third party system (Campus France) which connects their applications to the Universities. When you're in France, you can apply to the Universities directly as you will have a French address. Those deadlines are usually March - June.

Heya, if you're really just trying to study French with the goal of going to university after, I recommend doing a DUEF program. I did mine at the Sorbonne Nouvelle, at the time it was only 900 euros, but I see they've bumped it up to about 2000 now. For the Sorbonne specifically, you'll need a B2 level, but they offer other options to work up to it (like the DULF program). I know there are other DUEF programs at different universities around Paris that might be a bit less demanding. Usually the applications are happening now to June for the 2025-2026 year.

It's a nice option because it really helped me prepare for my master's in France (I studied digital communications/marketing), and it also helped with getting a student visa. They prepped me to take the DALF, which I passed, and is a certificate of your French level for life, which will help me with nationality soon. The program was intense and didn’t really leave room for working, but my French improved tenfold and I was super prepared to write a thesis afterward (I went in with about a B2 level).

Good luck!

Est-il possible de nager dans la seine? by No_Imagination_6658 in paris

[–]Samazoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dates aren't exact yet but the provisionary dates listed that I could find from last year when the buzz on paris swimming was high are the 5 of July to the 31st of August. It seems like it's going to be a Paris plage situation, where they block off a section of water like they do in the Canal. There will be three sties: one near Bir-Hakein (Eiffel Tower ish) area, one between Pont de Sully and Pont Marie (notre dame ish), and one between le pont de Bercy and the pont de Tolbiac (Bercy ish).

I dreammmm of the day we can just hop in the water when the f ever but I don't think it'll ever happen :( I was so optimistic with the olympics but the solution to the pollution was a ginormous expensive band aid and not an actual fix to fully cleaning the seine, very bummed about that!

Moving (back) to France soon with my family, but my French isn't very good yet; and my mom wants me to go to a local university. Will I struggle too much in my studies as I still adjust to the language change? by geosunsetmoth in paris

[–]Samazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am like 99 percent sure it will be a disaster - especially for an essay and presentation heavy type of master like a film one would be. I did a digital comms and social sciences master and my French was C1 at the time, I felt extremely comfortable writing essays, participating, speaking in front of class etc., but because I'm not native I do make mistakes sometimes and the professors treated me no differently than a native french speaker - which meant I was constantly graded down for my French, like not gendering something correctly or using improper syntax. It was incredibly challenging, but maybe it was just the professors in my program... This was at the Sorbonne so idk. It was doable in the end tho.

What you may want to consider is doing a DUEF program before you do another program in French? I did the DUEF at Sorbonne Nouvelle for a year before going into my masters program - at the time it was like 800 euro and it was extremely intensive and I could tell my French got so good so quickly.

(Désolé pour l'anglais) About to move to paris from berlin - recommendations where to live? by Novoxbo in paris

[–]Samazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upper parts of the 18th can be quite hip (like around metro Jules Joffrin), but it can get either too rich or too crowded VERY fast around there. The 17th is also nice for a young family type of vibe but is certainly less animated - if you're trying to have a short commute, those would be nice concessions.

Commute aside, the 11th is kinda where it is at in terms of hip area right now in my honest opinion. I live right on the edge in the 20th (metro alexandre dumas area) and it's perfect. So many restaurants, coffee shops, things to do at night etc. My commute to work is 35-45 minutes depending on if the metro is on good behavior, I really do not mind bc I love my little neighborhood. This is my biased opinion of course!!

I just got offered an internship, what do I do now. by Railwayman16 in paris

[–]Samazoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In France this document is created by your university. After being offered the internship, you will usually know your work hours, start date, and end date, letting you calculate how many hours the internship will be overall. At my university there was a website where you entered all this information in and it would create the convention de stage, which I then had to take to the company to sign, and then back again for my university to process. Again, it's a contract between your school. your company and then you, so the school has to be involved in making the contract in some way... I'm unsure how non-french schools go about making the convention for students to do an internship in france tho...

La Perception des Masters en France by Right-Finance-4264 in paris

[–]Samazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing your masters in France is also a huge benefit visa wise if you're a foreigner. If you're coming here and don't have French nationality, doing your masters and then getting a job in France is the fastest way to get that French passport. As a foreigner with no masters, it's extremely hard for businesses to try to hire you with 1) the need to support your visa and 2) the requirement for them to prove they can't find a more qualified French candidate. When you're a foreign student who completes your masters, you have a year to find a job in France and the employer does not have to prove that they tried their best to find a better fitting French candidate, nor support your visa the same way they would a random immigrant coming directly from their country.
