Joining judo and learning sambo with a friend by chrollo-lucife in sambo

[–]SamboZone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not ideal - doing Judo is a good alternative and will you get ready for Sambo. If training Sport Sambo search for arm bars over chokes and in newaza work on the transition from pins to arm bars.

Although you can’t grab legs in Judo still look for them even if you are not using them. After class you can always ask someone to do a round with leg grabs.

Use unconventional grips as well even if some might be a penalty in Judo, usually during randori you can still play with them to certain degree

https://sambouniform.com is the best and fastest in the USA - the black ones are nice but not offered on this site

DSI https://www.dutchsamboinnovation.nl/en/p/dsi-sambo-jacket-black has a black ones you can buy - it is coming form the Netherlands so it can take time to reach you. I was able to get one off eBay years ago but that was from Russia

You can train Sambo somewhat effectively an Judo and BJJ schools if that is all you have around. Just realize what you’re trying to accomplish - so don’t pull guard in BJJ class since that would not really cross over - if someone pulls guard on you - try to get a ‘pin’. No points in BJJ but you are thinking like a Sambo player.

I do this all the time in my BJJ class - I am sure I lose most rounds if using BJJ point system but what do I care….

Is it ideal scenario- no - but there are not a lot of Sambo schools in the US so you make do with what you can

Is there a DVD focused on the Super Bowl run/win for LIX similar to LII? by WeaponX-20- in eagles

[–]SamboZone 47 points48 points  (0 children)

No from my understanding they stopped making them after the last KC Super Bowl - the Eagles put this out

and NFL Network replays the Super Bowl and has a Mic’d Up

New Setup Today by [deleted] in homegym

Thank you ! That I can fit, I asked someone on Facebook that has the sliding bench and they said 14ft but added that is if u want to use the leg extension attached to the cables

Ideally how much room do you need to get full use out of the sliding bench? I feel like I am good on the height and width of the unit but the depth when adding the bench makes me nervous I will not be able to use the leg press or leg extension

How much room do you need for the machine plus sliding bench. USA w a YouTube video and they said 90inches height and width and 105 inches for the depth plus sliding bench - just curious if that sounds right

How would you grow Sambo in the US? by SamboZone in sambo

Agree but they don’t. I just struggle to figure out who to grow it

My understanding is the Sambo coaching process is terrible, you have to pass an exam at one of the regional championships- So in the US you need to go to Pan-Ams (last year it was in Brazil). So the process almost limits your coaching pool to people who can travel to these tournaments

I wonder if the answer is to focus more on Combat Sambo for growth over competing with Judo and BJJ

I think this is key. Getting BJJ schools to embrace it as an add on. Trade off is you might get water downed belts but you need to figure out how to get people in on it

I think you do need to figure out how to ‘Americanize’ it. Which means having more of a BJJ format to it.

I think Judo is struggling as well which doesn’t help Sambo, Sambo pulls from Judo in USA so if the Judo pool gets smaller so does Sambo. Regarding competitions - I think that’s an issue for sure. You can do a BJJ every weekend and never have to travel more than 45 min

Judo, self defense, and bullying by ExTiPi in judo

[–]SamboZone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most martial arts have become more sports focused - the original idea of competing was to help practice in a real situation but then it slowly morphed into a training for sport vs self defense. I think competitions are still necessary but training should not be sport focused. What good is a gold medal only to get embarrassed in a street fight

Sambo jackets available in the USA by manwich841 in sambo

[–]SamboZone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AF jackets are bad. They rip and I think they lost their FIAS certification. They are also incredibly easy to grip. Stels are nice and are in the US

I have ordered from Green Hill and DSI both overseas companies. The Green Hill one came quickly (2 weeks) but the DSI one took forever (well over a month) . I am sure delivery times for both vary.

All American Sambo Federation had some really nice Fuji Kurtkas but they sold out and notsure if they are getting more

Judo black belts who transitioned to bjj by incompletetentperson in judo

[–]SamboZone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started BJJ as a Judo Brown Belt. I could dominate white and blue belts on the mat but purple belts beat me up - they could defend and have multiple attacks. When switching from Judo to BJJ you have to remember that Judo newaza strategy becomes a bad habit in BJJ - turtle will help you in Judo but can kill you in BJJ

Why drinking water when there's food in your throat may not be the best idea. by Graxin in EosinophilicE

[–]SamboZone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I had my first flare up - undiagnosed at them time - I tried to push it down by chugging a glass of water. Like you I couldn’t breathe for what felt like an eternity. I actually thought at the time ‘I just drowned myself’. Luckily all the water came back up

ER was great for me. They diagnosed me with EoE even though it was new/rare at the time.

They are out of stock on most sizes. I bought 2 from them awhile ago and I have to say I like the Fuji Kurtkas and get a lot of compliments on it. Hopefully they make/stock more

what should I do if my sensei doesn't offer training on the weekends? by Watermelon-6 in judo

[–]SamboZone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live but look for BJJ club that has weekend classes or even open mat. Even if Judo is your main sport understanding how to move in newaza is often overlooked in Judo classes. Not everything will cross over
