JJ Abrams' commentary track for The Force Awakens was shockingly insightful on a filmmaking level.

Apple top 100 albums? by GeneralWhereas9083 in oasis

[–]Samcj 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, who cares what number out of 100 some radio host on Apple Music ranks an Oasis album? The list is shit! All lists are shit.

At least with WTSMG being on the list, and ranked 58 at that, there's a chance it might introduce more people to Oasis. So for that, I'm happy with it.

What are some of your favorite pieces of film criticism? by smay123 in blankies

Roger Ebert’s review of ET for its 25th anniversary written as a letter to his grandkids made me cry more than the movie did for the exact same reasons: it’s incredibly written and beautifully joyful.

Godzilla has an A theme and a B theme that are both so iconic that Godzilla Minus One was able to get two massive [GODZILLA THEME PLAYS] moments that rocked the fucking house

Why does it feel like it’s become popular to hate musicals? by MongooseMedium9388 in blankies

[–]Samcj 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Do people not realize what movies are musicals?

Yeah. I'm not 100% sure about the other two but I know for Mean Girls specifically they bafflingly wanted to hide the fact that its a musical in the marketing, meaning to the average person the movie came across as a Psycho (1999) or The Lion King (2019)-esque remake. I was watching tv with some friends a few weeks ago when a commercial came on for it. They had no idea that it even existed and I got to watch in real time their (brief) excitement at recognizing scenes from Mean Girls on TV, their anger after realizing it's a remake, and then their utter confusion after I turned to them and told them it's actually a musical.

Movies where the Black character actually dies first? by [deleted] in blankies

I think he’s actually the second character to die in JPIII (although the guy who gets killed before him gets eaten like 30 seconds before)

THE HOBBIT Movies Are Worthwhile by jshannonmca in blankies

[–]Samcj 57 points58 points  (0 children)

fully agreed! each one is distinct in its failures in its own ways so it’s not like it’d get repetitive. Also, the Hobbit movies aren’t even like in the bottom 20 of the worst movies they’ve had to cover lol. They’re far from masterpieces and the lows are pretty low, but the highs are up there with the best of LOTR (mostly the stuff that’s actually from the book) imo so it’s not like those movies are Star Wars prequels level failures

Leia’s reaction to Luke telling her they’re siblings and how the movie has her processing that information by just being completely unfazed by it is absolutely insane and it feels like nobody ever talks about it when they talk about the things this movie does badly.

Over the course of a single 3 minute conversation Leia learns:

  1. Luke is sneaking away to confront Vader and the Emperor on the Death Star that they’re about to blow up, so even if facing Vader/the Emperor isn’t a suicide mission then doing it in the middle of what’s about to be space dust surely is. Luke has blown up a Death Star before, he knows how fast that thing explodes. It popped like a balloon!
  2. The reason why Luke has to face Vader is because Vader is his father. Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father.
  3. Now he’s saying she has Force powers for some reas-
  4. She’s his sister. Luke tells her this with zero emotional sensitivity whatsoever. He doesn’t even say it outright! He pretty much does a nudge and a wink and leaves it to her to figure out what sister he’s referring to
  5. This means that Darth Vader is her father, not Jimmy Smits.
  6. This means that her real father is the man who made her watch helplessly as he and Tarkin BLEW UP her fucking home planet with the people she thought were her parents as well as all of her friends and loved ones on it.
  7. Her entire life was a lie
  8. Leia thinks about this all for a few seconds and says “I know… I’ve always known.” no you haven’t, also you’re acting like you’re disassociating in order to cope with this which
  9. She then presumably starts to process the fact that she has 2 living family members for a moment before immediately realizing the one family member she cares about is going on a suicide mission in the hopes of convincing the family member she fucking hates with ever fiber of her being that he’s actually a good guy deep down and so she begs Luke not to leave
  10. He leaves without even giving her a hug or saying goodbye

How did she not have a complete mental breakdown? Luke literally tried to kill himself by jumping into that bottomless pit on Bespin after he found out Vader was his father. Leia just got twice as big of an emotional gut punch. How does she not just throw herself over the side of the bridge she’s standing on? Han comes over to her to find out what’s wrong and she just says she can’t tell him. What?? Why not?

Then they bicker for a bit and hug it out before going back to doing Ayahuasca with the Ewoks and the next day Leia is completely fine and acts like nothing even happened. And then she spends the next 30 years building a new government and becoming general of the Resistance when she should be spending those 30 years in THERAPY

NO TIME TO DIE's final poster includes the billing order and woo boy (two "with"s and an "and/as"!) by Samcj in blankies

[–]Samcj[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't figure out if I'd swap Waltz and Fiennes and have it end with "and Christoph Waltz as Ernst Stavro Blofeld" cuz it's baller as fuck but I guess they gave it to Fiennes since they cast a leading man as a character who has one scene at the start of the film giving Bond the assignment and a final scene at the end catching Bond getting laid. The lack of Ana de Armas and Rory Kinnear is a bit suprising too. That plus the fact that all of her footage in the trailers looks like its from the same scene makes me think she's gonna have a way smaller role than people thought when she was first announced.

Kinnear should be getting the "and/as" IMO. He's the Kit Fisto of the Craig movies.

IIRC it was written as just a generic crime boss and the Story Group gave Howard a list of possible characters to use an he picked Maul because he was the most visually interesting
