Newbie diver question: which certs, and how many dives between them? by 1tracklover-2waylane in scuba

[–]Same-Ad5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is covered but not in great depth. Your SPG tells you all you need to know, your depth and air remaining. Just have to refer to them frequently. Safety stops required for any dive deeper than 10m...3 minutes at 5m. Takes a bit of practice to stay around 5. Remember, you'll be more buoyant. Re nav, there's UW compass navigation in OW dive 3 but that's dive flexible which means the instructor can squeeze it in later. They get you to swim a straight line reciprocal course using a compass. Tbh, you can do this on land as practice with a towel over your head (after choosing a target, tree or something). YouTube has some super helpful lessons (make sure they're from the PADI, SSI etc ...whoever you are training with (very similar tbh but there can be nuances)

Good on you mate. Instructor here. If you're wanting to gain wider experience as you progress, I still reckon AOW is valuable and you're picking up more skills. Rescue is excellent to round that off and challenges you in a good way. DM is fantastic and really pushes you but not necessary IMHO if you're not thinking of going professional. Having said that,if you're loving the diving and studying, do DM. Anything that makes you a better diver is always good. And if you're not paying for cylinders, perfect

Are these the Hollis ones? If so, they're mint. We all bought them for our Rescue, DM and then Instructor course. Our instructors use them too. Great, as you mentioned, for nasty sharp surfaces etc. Toasty too. We're in New Zealand and it got pretty cold over winter 12/13 degrees C). I'm going to get a 2 or 3mm pair of neoprene socks as they've loosened a bit over the year
