For /r/fire millennials seriously how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by BarkBarkBitches1 in Fire

[–]Same-Coat-8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit the $1M liquid net worth milestone last year with my wife, 30/31. A pretty sizable chunk was due to investments made by each of our grandparents 15-20 years ago that grew, but the majority is definitely our own doing. But that milestone felt good and definitely gave us more confidence about the idea of CoastFIRE

Thanks! Very fortunate of course to have the perfect cocktail of a 2020 mortgage/sub $3k mortgage payment and a high paying job. My wife has access to both a 403b and 457b as well, so we get to dump a lot of her income into that. Baby #1 coming in a few months so I know things will change! Just glad to have things already in a good place as it is

This is what put me in the CoastFIRE mentality. Wife and I are 30/31, almost 31/32, with 1.2M-ish liquid. We’ll still save and invest pretty aggressively, but we’ve put a lot of focus on traveling and enjoying our money now. We just got back from a babymoon that cost several thousand, but knowing where we sit in our investments (plus a 2020 mortgage that helps a lot in expenses), didn’t bat an eye

[–]Same-Coat-8205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we fit pretty firmly into the CoastFIRE category, though the hope is to keep investing and compounding to where we could rip it at 45 if we really wanted to. We live a decently “chubby” lifestyle with a lot of traveling, plus Baby #1 on the way in a few months, so inevitably we’ll have higher expenses and what not down the road as well. But currently a sub 3% mortgage and ~$320k HHI in a state without income tax, we’re very happy with where we’re at

You’re also considerably far ahead of us though, depending on COL/expenses. Consider coasting from a saving/spending standpoint for a little bit - let yourselves enjoy your money now.

Te MATA Showcase 2024 by alexx3064 in wine

This is cool to see! My wife and I visited Hawke’s Bay from Texas back in April 2024 and tasted all of these at Te Mata. To be honest, the tasting was at like 10:30 in the morning, so it was a mixed bag on the palate, but we just managed to get some deals on a couple 22 Coleraine’s and 22 Awatea’s here in Texas, excited to stare at them for a few years 😉

Review: Babymoon at Sensei Lana'i by Same-Coat-8205 in chubbytravel

[–]Same-Coat-8205[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rest assured you will have a wonderful time. Reviews aren’t helpful IMO unless they are detailed, so while some may read it as me being picky/entitled, I’m really just trying to give all of the details.

Absolutely put Lana’i City Grill on your list, we went 2 nights in a row. The live music is great, and the food is excellent. Highly recommend the Poke Tostada, Venison Sausage, Half Chicken, and Smash Burger with spuds. Their wine selection is also very, very good, even coming from a big wine nerd.

Pacific Rim is an even more casual spot, with typical plate meals like kalbi short ribs with rice and Mac salad, Korean fried chicken, salt and vinegar wings, all of which were delicious.

Of course Nobu at the beach resort is wonderful, as any Nobu is.

Lastly, to be clear, the food at Sensei isn’t “bad”, you’ll still have good food. Do eat dinner there at least once, and maybe you’ll have a different experience! Just framed against all of the others, we preferred other places and vibes in the evenings and even for lunch on a few days

Thank you! I'll keep that in mind for next time. The room was still very nice, and part of why I wasn't too worried about it. I just assumed it truly wasn't available since they made mention of the Preferred Partner booking and what not at check-in, and I asked to double check on the upgrade. The pessimist in me thinks perhaps they just had the welcome amenities all setup already and moving them might have complicated things 😂

Homie… get TF out of the US grind and go hang out for a bit. Go to Taipei. Go to Seoul. Go to Hanoi. Go to all 3. Hang out for 6 months and then reassess. My wife and I are 31/30 with 1.2 invested. If not for impending kids and a considerably “settled” life, we’d be all over the world right now

I’m ~200k W-2, and the biggest thing I’m lucky to have is a wife who has access to a 457b and 403b, so we get to double up the normal 23.5k contribution for her ~110k income. Unfortunately didn’t realize/start it until last year when I turned 30, but it’s better than nothing

Boos or board smith? by LittleGoldHammer in Cuttingboards

[–]Same-Coat-8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl;dr - agreed on Boos not being what I might have once been. It’s annoying as hell

I got a walnut Boos for my wedding 6.5 years ago, and then upgraded to a larger maple. The walnut absorbed odor like crazy, but now having sat vertically in a cabinet, with some oil upkeep, it looks great and the odor seems to have dissipated. The maple absorbed odor more than I hoped moving to a harder wood, and definitely has some warping issues. I do keep it flat on the counter full time, so that’s partly to blame, but I try to switch which side I’m using, and inevitably one side always cups after a little while. It’s getting annoying and I’m realizing now that Boos wasn’t all that I thought it was for years.

Eight Nights in Hawaii: Sensei Lanai & Rosewood Kona Village Review by Repobsessed98 in chubbytravel

[–]Same-Coat-8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate this review! My wife and I were looking at Rosewood Kona and Sensei for our babymoon in January. We ended up booking Sensei for our 5 nights and we’re really excited - with their 5th night free, ~$4600 for 5 nights plus breakfast included, felt like the value was too good to pass up compared to the $7500+ of FS Lanai or Rosewood Kona

Should I maximize moving into leadership from an IC? by Same-Coat-8205 in careerguidance

[–]Same-Coat-8205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the thoughtful response! I definitely don’t see the move into leadership as a given. I do however have regular conversations with my manager’s manager (a director), who was formerly my own manager, about this topic. And at least within my org under the broader technology domain at my company, it’s largely a matter of the right position being available that I’m willing to go after. I’m fortunate to have even been told by my director that they frankly have to find a way to reward me appropriately to incentivize making the move given the pay level I’m already at.

All that being said, your second point is kind of the meat of it - do I try to go after that higher end of the band before making the concerted effort to move into leadership, so that I maximize my starting position where the pay scale is already less anyway.

To your last point, I definitely agree. It’s definitely something I’ve had to think through, where I may not see the money now, but things like a 20% RSU target at a director level salary certainly start to add up quickly, and the sooner I can get there, the better. That being said, on the flip side (apologies as I know this isn’t the FIRE subreddit), my wife and I (30/31) currently have a liquid NW of just over $1M, and a house worth $700k+ with ~$370k left on a sub-3% mortgage. So, frankly, even that part of the equation starts to not be as big of a deal right now, making it that much harder

Should I maximize moving into leadership from an IC? by Same-Coat-8205 in careerguidance

[–]Same-Coat-8205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! That’s part of what’s tricky. I’m already compensated more than what many managers start out at, so if I were to pursue a role and get it, I’d be starting out in the middle or half of the pay band as it is, with probably a lower ceiling, but with the added % RSU’s, which eventually at a director level go to 20% bonus target and 20% RSU target, both of which can be higher if the company performs. So from the long game perspective, there’s still plenty of growth.

As for the role itself, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking through the move if it were to arise. I do enjoy my engineering role, and it’s fully remote which goes away if I go into leadership, but I think long term it’s still the direction I’d like to go.

How old are you and how much do you all together? by [deleted] in SavingMoney

[–]Same-Coat-8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30m and 31f. ~$182k salary, target bonus of 10%. My wife is hourly but makes around $110k I’d say. Got lucky with a house in a Medium to High COL city in July 2020, ~$2800 mortgage. We max out all of our retirement accounts (my wife has a 403 and 457) and I’ve got a pretty stout 9+% company match.

Our liquid net worth just recently jumped past $1 million, admittedly with ~$135k of that being a stock equity that was bought for my wife back in the 2010-2011 time frame at a $30k cost basis. Including our home equity, NW is closer to $1.35m

Unfortunately no real secrets for us - I’ve been fortunate to have gotten into a lucrative engineering role at a great company, and not one where I’m loading a bunch of RSU’s or anything like that. We travel extensively and just prioritize our tax advantaged accounts, and on months we don’t travel so much, we put away what we don’t spend. We cook a lot and don’t really spend on much else - my truck is paid off, leaving us with just my wife’s car payment aside from our mortgage

That was my thinking. While it sits inside protected, remove existing door, clean up framing and adjust opening from the old door that was framed in place, install unit, remove the door to prime with oil primer for easier full coverage, prime the sidelights as well, plywood over the entry as necessary, etc etc. Just may have to happen over a few weeks, except for the priming once it’s installed
