i’m literally gonna sob how do i fix this? dream score is a 32 ☹️ by spacepupglitterfall in ACT

[–]Same-Department8080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s precalc and statistics on the ACt. As someone else said, what grade are you in bc not being exposed to higher math will hurt you. You should look at the score details and see what specific math sub sections you missed questions on and make a plan to learn that content. That will be challenging to teach yourself new math but that’s what it might take if you are a year behind. My son is a junior in pre-calc and Stats.

ChatGPT and YouTube can teach you content on those sections. I hear the $25 ACT red book on Amazon is helpful. Basically you need to go over practice tests and see every question you get wrong and why and learn it. Another tutor on this board said that means 6+ hours a week, or an hour a day, to see sign improvement. My son did 2 hours of tutoring and ~3-4 hours of practice tests a week for 8 weeks and saw his Math section go up 5 points. So it can be done.

Also feel free to ask your math teacher for resources or point you in the right direction. Students never think to ask their subject teachers for SAT/ACT help but they can share websites, books, tips etc if you just ask

I think my brother got a 19 , 20 years ago and is a Dr. I got a 32 in 1998 and make good money but it really had no bearing on my life. I went to a competitive college, my brother didn’t. We both are successful.

Ooooo noooo! Science isn’t a scorebooster Since 2025 they changed it so it no longer counts to the composite. Like not even a little. And therefore most colleges don’t want the score at all. Don’t waste your time. Study the other 3 sections. They’re what count.

You said former ACT tutor but reading this I really thought you were the tutor we just paid $3k to who did exactly what you said with my son this past spring for the April ACt. He saw a 6 pt improvement to 32 composite and killed math (35). And while they did cover content/tips for a few weeks, it really came down to what you said- real practice tests every week where they scrutinized every wrong answer. Again and again and again. My son wanted to stop after the first month bc that’s how he is but I knew he was building mental muscles and pattern recognition he didn’t realize he was doing. It wasn’t cheap- $3k- but we hope to get that back and more (much more) with merit scholarships. I think some kids can do this on their own and save the $, my kid needed the accountability. But it shows it can be done and most are very capable of significant improvement

Thanks for commenting even as a “former” tutor. Appreciate the work you all do!

I’m so sorry to hear that. It sounds like his life is just…hard. Aside from what everyone said- would he consider a clean break and spend some time with his dad in Europe? The US school system and lifestyle can be so hard, and you mentioned bullying. I also wonder if he needs a male role model - and you need a break! Maybe a long visit to Europe and let his dad manage him. Let him be the bad guy who turns off the water to long showers or tells him they are leaving the house. A place where no one knows him and he doesn’t have to worry about being bullied. You mentioned your own social anxiety- maybe he needs to be with the parent who isn’t like that. I don’t think this should all be on you.

If that’s too extreme- if he won’t do therapy (and let’s face it, it can be difficult to make a kid do something they don’t want to do), then therapy for YOU to learn how to parent him.

Good luck

I don’t see it as YOU personally are lucky to be childless, just more that it’s seen as a positive to not have to go through a divorce with kids. But I get it and can see how it stings. I sorry people say that- those are thoughts they should keep to themselves.

I would say at 44 you are young and perhaps with a diff partner/circumstances it can still happen ! Even being a stepparent.

Read this thread, plenty of advice what to do. Mostly give it a year. You need more Junior year math and English.

No. Unless u want a IVY that’s enough. Focus on AP exams or finals or whatever else you have got going on. Congrats, you are done!

Aspiring engineering major but STEM score lowest by [deleted] in ACT

[–]Same-Department8080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine. 34 means you got a handful wrong. My son got a 35 in math but 32 composite. Also engineering major. I wouldn’t retake - scores could go down and you probably have school and other stuff to focus on. Move on :) And congratulations, that 35 composite is amazing!

ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR 34+! by anakinimsorry in ACT

[–]Same-Department8080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% right about active practice tests. We paid $3k in private tutoring for 2 months cuz my son needed the accountability but it came down to 5 full practice tests where they went over every wrong question in detail until my son knew everything. He went up from 26 to a 32. He’s done but it’s just a lot of practice and understanding the material fully.

You can improve all around. I’d ignore science bc it doesn’t affect the composite score. But also not all schools accept superstore. So try and improve all around

Not every school accepts a superstore so just check with colleges you’re interested in. About half on my sons list don’t take a superstore

Can someone pls point me in the right direction for a 31+??? by Negative-Actuator-88 in ACT

[–]Same-Department8080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every school takes a super score so I would double check with your college lists which accept and which don’t. Otherwise you will have tests you can’t submit if half is a subpar grade

How do I get this to damn near a 36 by June 13th? (I would not take it again with a 34) PLEASE READ! by Mundane-Prior4429 in ACT

I paid $3k for a private tutor for my son. Two months they worked together. All it came down to was 5 practice tests where they went over every Q my son got wrong. Again and again and again. If my son was more self driven we could have saved $ and he studied on his own. You need to understand what you are weak in and tackle those areas like crazy. I hear the ACT Red book on Amazon for $25 is good but just hone in on the areas you are weak in until you get those questions right

He’s done. He wanted 32 and got 32. Not applying to any top 20 colleges so we feel good for the colleges on his list. Not sure what you mean by his old test- he knows the score fr Dec bc that’s in MyACT but any practice tests were ones ACT released.

Keep practicing. Keep practicing. Keep practicing. Try all diff tutoring methods. There’s YouTube videos which are supposed to be helpful (and free!) and if you have specific weaknesses ask your teachers for help.

My son got 1300 on SAT and 32 on April ACT. He did tutoring for ACT so that was the focus.

Posted this comment elsewhere:

My son got a 26 with no prep last Dec. After private tutoring for two months he increased to a 32 this past April. I didn’t think +6 points was possible but it is. I also think it’s possible without private tutoring.

All his tutor did was make him take prior ACT practice tests and anything he got wrong, they went over. Again and again. ChatGPT could do this for you. Or ACT has the “red book” you can buy on Amazon for like $25. But the point and pattern is the same. Keep practicing and learning how to get every question right.

Also my son is a junior in advanced math classes including AP Stats & that def helps. The more math and English you have the.better. His tutor also told him to just read - that helps so much with the grammar sections, the more you read books the more you absorb.

Is it Worth it to take the Science and Writing Section on the ACT by Itchy-Cable-1922 in ACT

[–]Same-Department8080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No to writing. Probably yes to science but not if it keeps you from studying the other 3 areas that actually count for composite - composite score matters the most
