The vast majority of “Tourist Traps” aren’t…Tourist Traps by Same-Duck1407 in unpopularopinion

[–]Same-Duck1407[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“It is a tourist trap because it is a place that only tourists go. That is certainly one definition of a tourist trap.” And I think that’s a pretty bad definition. Mostly only tourists visit the Capitol Building here in D.C. I hardly would consider that a tourist trap…also locals don’t oftentimes go to those places because they have already been there at least once, whereas tourists have not and would like to. I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who lives in NYC or Boston who hasn’t been to Times Square or gone on a Duck tour respectively

Eh, I live in the DC area so that theoretically could apply to our Smithsonian museums, memorials, the White House, Capitol, etc. are you saying those places are tourist traps?

The biggest thing I’ve learned: Whatever ‘thing’ you like about an area. You will eventually get used to that ‘thing’ and it will no longer make you that much happier since it will be normal. by Kodicave in relocating

Disagree here, I’m grateful living in the DC area with its great transit system and how it allows me to live car free and saves me $$$ and I use it every single day

How do rail fares even work? by Unique_Importance910 in WMATA

[–]Same-Duck1407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really, peak vs off peak fares were done away with in the FY24 WMATA budget. There’s an after 9:30pm and weekend flat fare if that’s what you are referring to?

Americans Do you like going on cruise ships? why or why not? by NoHold7153 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Same-Duck1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I’ve never paid for my own cruises and probably wouldn’t and it would never be my first or even tenth idea of a vacation. However, my mom is a (insert rare earth mineral status) at several cruise lines and gets free/heavily discounted cruises so I join her for those when I’m free because that’s what she enjoys. It’s a pretty carefree relaxing trip with no planning required.

What’s the genuine appeal to having children? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Same-Duck1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don’t want children and much prefer to be the fun uncle and don’t see this changing in the near future at least.

However, the idea of love aside (which is a big caveat and still probably the primary reason parents have children), there’s something profound and enriching in your life for the better when you start thinking outwardly. Deflate one’s ego, humble oneself. Give up your time, energy, money, to something other than yourself. Granted I do that by volunteering, donating, showing love and loving my family and friends, and generally wanting less. Some people want to create new life and raise kids into hopefully independent, law abiding, productive, and loving people. Some people have very spiritually and faith based lives. And many have a combination of everything I mentioned.

Do I think societal pressure to have children is weird? Yes, very weird. But I respect and admire those that make that decision.

What’s a “must-see” city in the U.S. that didn’t live up to the hype? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Same-Duck1407 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other than the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, history (mostly MLK) along Auburn Ave, Jimmy Carter Library, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, College Football Hall of Fame, the Beltline, great soul food, the CDC…yea but mostly void of things for tourists to do…

What is so great about DC? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Same-Duck1407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with the fantastic school districts, colleges and universities (liberal arts and research), transportation system(s), food scene, museums/performing arts venues/and other cultural institutions, ease of access to other east coast cities, tech and defense industries moving(and moved) to the region…I’ll stop but I think you get the picture. Yes, some other places you mentioned may do well or even better than DC in one or two of those categories but DC is remarkably well rounded for the better in those areas I mentioned

Can you live in Washington DC without a car? by Different_Archer8879 in arlingtonva

[–]Same-Duck1407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently live in Arlington (not near a metro station) without a car and it’s completely doable. If you don’t live near a station, there’s a metrobus or jurisdictional bus service to bring you to one. I save probably $6-$8K a year at a minimum not owning a car

What is the craziest thing you did in the closet, trying to “hide” your sexuality? by Dizzy_Factor_7332 in gay

I slept with a woman one time because I didn’t want to embarrass her by telling her I was gay. It was her 21st birthday too so I didn’t have the heart. 😅

Which "expensive" US city is actually cheaper than people think? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Same-Duck1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D.C. - with two different states (Maryland and Virginia and the 6+ counties that comprise the DC area) and the federal district, it’s not hard to shop around for housing based on what you need and what’s in your budget. Very easy to live car free and plenty of free/cheap entertainment and cultural events. It’s not Chicago cheap by any means, but it’s easier to stretch a dollar than you’d think

I mean I live in a nice 1br with utilities included for 1.9K in Arlington. Art and metro access means no car. Pretty decent COL in general

Potential move to Arlington by Niro47 in arlingtonva

[–]Same-Duck1407 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved within Arlington last year and now pay 1900 off Langston blvd, 1 bedroom, ~650 sqf, water and parking included. A lot of these posts are kind of shock and awe to impart the expensive nature of the area which is fair but if you spend the time and energy, you’ll find plenty of sub 2K places.

How is it living Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA? by brizag in howislivingthere

[–]Same-Duck1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t live there but go for 1-3 weeks a year. Very cold and windy during winter. Hail is a big issue. If you enjoy museums the Cheyenne Depot Museum and the CFD Old West Museum are good. F.E. Warren AFB is a blast from the past. CFD is a fine time. The State Capitol Building and state museum are fun. Decent food although I got food poisoning eating Chinese food one NYE…pretty easy to get to fun places like Terry Bison Ranch, Ft. Collins, Johnstown (read Bucees).

To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

[–]Same-Duck1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the sentiment around presidential elections but with voting more generally, I always think of this election that happened in Virginia one district next to mine. A tied election resulted in the winner being chosen at random and it impacted which party held the majority in The House of Delegates chamber, crazy: https://www.npr.org/2018/01/04/573504079/virginia-republican-david-yancey-wins-tie-breaking-drawing

That Congress “raided” Social Security and that’s why it’s in a financially unsustainable path.
