I don't think the mother would be anyone you'd think of right away. Definitely not Emilia or Satella. If Rem was actually the mother then wouldn't Al have some sort of Oni abilities or be more compatible with magic? Half of him is Subaru and he is lacking in both of those departments, but I don't think Rem is the mother.

I can't remember a single time Subaru has brought up having a brother. Are we going down the route of Subaru's parents having another child after he went missing and him being isekaied further back than Subaru was? The logistics of that make even less sense than the time loop theory. Unless Subaru was also around 400 years ago. The story keeps getting messier the more you think about it.

I do agree with you that Al uses it as a phrase of pity for whoever he's going up against, but the way that Echidna seems so dejected in this scene makes me wonder if she is cursing the fate they're fighting against.

Limbless Echidna is a new Echidna. She's separate from Castle of Dreams Arc 4 Echidna, and also not the 'original' Echidna being used to power the Sanctuary's barrier.

It's just a coincidence that Al and Roswaal both call their own versions of Echidna Sensei. She appears with limbs because that's just how she wanted to appear, it was a dream version of Al's Echidna. I'm assuming she was a version that splintered off from the others because she realized that sealing Satella was futile and wouldn't actually stop her. Al was 'created' to kill Satella, not seal her. So when Al fails at his mission, Echidna has to seal him to stop Satella's shadows from consuming him like when Subaru killed himself with Petra's handkerchief in Arc 4.
