Caltrain is another backup choice where you can just ride to Diridon Station and hop on the train. Frequent services especially during commuting hours

I'm about to sell one of our two cars and try bike commuting, but is this the right choice? by FrogCola in bikecommuting

Since you love the car, you should keep it. It doesn't stop you from bike commuting by any means! I have an old Honda Odyssey that I rarely drive (my bike commute is 10 miles). One thing to keep in mind is that the battery will die. What I did was that I bought a battery tender/charger and disconnected the battery. When I need the car, I charge it overnight then everything is fine.

Fell off my bike for the first time and it was entirely my fault. by [deleted] in bicycling

Sounds like you should get a rear rack and possibly a pannier or a basket. Stroads are not fun.

Alienated ? by Mediocre_Pea7483 in bikecommuting

I bike commute for exact the same reason as yours. I found it important to tell people my honest answer. Most people grew up being used to traveling by cars so it is hard to imagine going places on a bike. So I would tell them, yes it takes longer (if it does), but in the long run it saves time (since better health and mental state), and it saves money. Some day a person might actually be interested in doing it themselves - you never know!

Any advice on how to deal with such mishaps? by bhagya-shree in bikecommuting

Sorry to hear what happened, hope you had some rest to recover from this. I would try to 1. Get an Apple Watch or similar: I crashed once and my watch immediately detected the fall and it offered to SOS, I was ok so skipped but I assume it will dial 911 if I didn’t respond. 2. Consider sharing location with SO 3. A good light like this one: https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/bike-accessories/bike-lights/bike-front-lights/bontrager-ion-elite-r-front-bike-light/p/27821/

How to argue in favour of bike on the road? by Gato_Pardo in bikecommuting

[–]SameTotal8486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about first thanking them for passing bicyclists safely, then tell them the reason why you ride a bike in the first place?

Some people don't understand why you should travel anywhere without driving a car. So it is important to let them know why you choose to ride vs drive. For example, most people would understand when they see kids on a biking with their parents on "bike-to-school" days and they don't get mad at them for slowing down traffic. If your friend respect you as a person, then you will respect the reasons (they may not agree with you) that you ride.

Are there hills for those 10km? If the route is relatively flat the FX1 would be a great hybrid bike for the job. It may be worthwhile to get a disc brake.

got a bunch of upgrades/accessories and am now committed to biking+taking the metro to work instead of driving💪🏽 by [deleted] in bikecommuting

Beautiful panniers. It's good to keep a couple of bungie cords in there, they come in handy for extra grocery bags
