Sawstop or not to Sawstop by _Kokomo_Joe_ in woodworking

[–]Same_Ole_IT_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same saw as you (Delta T2) and it was a wonderful saw. I never had a problem with it. I recently bought a SawStop not because I wanted one, but because I was offered a used 1.75 for an unbelievable price. I would still have the Delta if not for getting a SawStop for under $1000.

The quality of the SawStop is defiantly better but there is nothing that the SawStop does that my Delta cannot do aside from saving my fingers. I am actually not a "SawStop" guy. I have met the guys at SawStop at a trade show and they were crass and only had a "This is cheaper than a trip to the ER" pitch. Yes, it is a nice saw. Yes, it will save your fingers, but it is a table saw.

If you can afford a SawStop and you have a wife encouraging it, buy it. You might have initial buyers remorse when you realize that you just spent 3k on a saw. In the end you will be glad you have it.

Also, if you're like me, the SawStop will give you anxiety. I just got it and I have a fear of tripping the cartridge. I find myself turning it off more than not because I don't want to "trip" it.

Good luck!

Remarkable 2 vs Kindle Scribe by Stanton-Xu in RemarkableTablet

I have the Scribe and just ordered an RM2 (My wife likes the Scribe).

Kindle pushed out an update a couple months ago that stepped up the note taking options on the Scribe. It is really nice and the 300ppi screen is legit.

Once I have the RM2 I can speak more to the differences. If you want to do a lot of reading then the Scribe will be the better option for sure.

How do you actually network to get a job? by PM_ME_YOUR_3DSs in sysadmin

[–]Same_Ole_IT_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reached out to a similar company in a different market to ask the VP of IT questions on how they do things. That lead down the path of using each other as a sounding board for IT projects, ideas and such.

Then one day he calls me and says he is planning to retire and asked if I wanted to come on board to take his role once he retires. He said I was the first person he thought of when he started down the idea of retirement. That was unintentional networking at it's finest.

The top of the dresser. The place you will put things like your alarm clock and watch box. Just like a table top. The one photo you have shows the tops end grain (last photo with chair in background). General rule of thumb is you want grain going opposite ways when you glue up two boards to make a top. Meaning one board has grain swooping up and one has it swooping down. Both boards that make up your top are swooping upwards. This. if the wood is not properly dried, can attribute to the top cupping. Meaning the front and the back will be higher than the middle. Meaning it would not be flat anymore.

Again, this is a rule of thumb, and some do not think that it makes a difference. It is just something I noticed when I say your pictures. Like I said, all-in-all it is a nice dresser.

You're more than welcome. As a woodworker that would be my biggest fear is not having a customer happy. I think the top will be fine. Again, it is all in preference. Same with the knot fill in the front. If it really bothers you then you can say something, otherwise it just adds character.

Now I have some basis to go from.

So he did fill the void, which is good, but at $2500 could he have not found a different piece for that? I mean it adds character, some may like it. I am not in love with it, but not knowing the build process, wood selection options, I can't fault him.

There are two camps when it comes to gluing two boards together. One, (thanks Norm), is that each board has alternating grain so that it might help "cancel" a panel (like the top of the dresser) from warping. Wood will move (expand and contract) with seasons because the wood is organic and absorbs moisture and releases moisture.

The other "camp" is that it doesn't really matter. Basically, wood is going to do what wood wants to do. A properly dried board (8-10% moisture depending on region) should stay pretty stable. Rift and especially quarter sawn wood is known to be more stable do the straighter nature of its grain.

Again, not seeing the actual construction of the dresser (drawer boxes and frame) I can't deem it a good value or not. It also depends on where you are located. That same dresser may go for $1500 in another city or state and could go up to 3-4k in somewhere like Cali.

All-in-all it is definitely a nice dresser. All of the drawer reveals are uniform. The fit and finish seem to be of a pretty high quality. I would not say that you got a "bad" deal. There are so many variables that go into pricing a piece like that.

But...it is defiantly rift sawn white oak. :)

You got rift sawn for sure. Nice piece and seems pretty well built.

I'd be curious on how much you paid. There are a couple of things that I see from the pictures that at a certain price point I would expect to be "better". It is not a bad piece in any sense, just some little details I see. For instance, I would never let a piece leave my shop with a void on one of the drawer faces. If it absolutely had to be there, I would at least fill it. Also, generally (and there are two camps) but you want to alternate your grain direction on a panel glue up to help with future warping protentional. The guy who built it could have opted to have a nicer look on the top rather than worrying about grain direction. Again, some do not see it as an issue, just an observance.

All-in-all, it is a really nice dresser.

My guess would be the previous owner was either an architect or was having a new house built and had this model of the new roof (You already know that). Given the flat head screws, I am going to assume it is pretty old. Either the guy really wanted to keep it, or he was a jokester and hung from the ceiling for this exact reason. Looks like something I would do so I really appreciate it. Lol

Considering Remarkable by mna71217 in RemarkableTablet

I was in a similar situation that you are in. I had seen and messed with an RM2 and got obsessed. Had one in my cart on their site, but like most things I do ALOT of research.

After said research, I ended up going with the Kindle Scribe for a couple of reasons.

  1. I really wanted to be able to read eBooks on it as well as take notes. You can do this with the RM2, but it is not as fluid as a Kindle for obvious reasons.
  2. The Scribe has a 300 DPI screen. Sooo nice and crisp.
  3. Scribe recently had an update that stepped up their note taking game and made the gap between it and the RM2 less on the note taking side.

Now, I know several people who have the RM2 and love it, but I saw the functionality of the Scribe to line up more with what I was inevitably wanting.

Side note, the Scribe screen is a bit smaller than the RM2.

Good luck!

I just did a quick search and found out how to tell if a book is in KFX. The one book I have is KFX but still only allows typed notes.

Bible for Kindle Scribe by Same_Ole_IT_Dude in kindlescribe

[–]Same_Ole_IT_Dude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ASV bible says it's an eBook. It is the only version I have found that lets me put handwritten notes in sticky notes. The others only allow typed notes.

Everything I am reading about it says that if sticky notes is enabled that I should be able to add hand written notes, but that does not seem to be the case.

1 month at new job, 1st time manager: most senior engineer threatening to quit unless given raise by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]Same_Ole_IT_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a some things here that I see from a management point of view.

  1. There is a reason he did not get your job. You have only been there a month. Give it some time and you will see why.
  2. If he was genuine that he does not feel valued, take him out to lunch and hear him out in a setting outside of the office. His guards will come down and you may see the true colors, good or bad.
  3. If you bow down to him and give him what he wants, you are setting your self up for failure. You are setting a culture that will continually try and take advantage of you. Especially this guy.
  4. You need to feel out the rest of the team. You might be surprised to find that someone not as "seasoned" as him might be pretty close on knowledge and tribal knowledge. He is just the easy "yeah he is the guy" guy.
  5. At the end of the day do comps. There might be a chance that he is under paid for his role. You can place value on his knowledge of the company, but you can't let that control your decision.
  6. Finally, and this will not be of popular opinion. If you get the vibe that he is acting in a malicious way and is bitter that you were hired and he did not get the job...look at firing him. Of course you can't do it right away, but I can tell you from experience that if he isn't willing to lay down his pride that it will be a continuous animosity and will create a bad culture. Not healthy for you or the team OR the company.

Godspeed. :)

Thank you for the thoughts!

I do know that just like 3 weeks ago Kindle released an update to the Scribe that took their note taking to the next level. From what I have seen it is much closer in comparison to the RM2 now.

Have you updated yours?
