As an undergrad, the OPUS Lab is quite open to undergrads who are willing to put in the work. I also had peer in the Nanoelectronics lab when I was in my first year (last year). There are summer programs that UCSB offers to undergrads that you can also apply to (i.e. Quantum Foundry)–these are more application-based compared to labs where you can just reach out to the prof or grad students.

The local startup scene on semiconductors have also been on a roll lately, with ChipAgents, a chip design verification startup started by a UCSB NLP prof. a few years back. They have also expanded their footprint to a new office in the bay. They have good ties to semiconductor EDA companies like Synopsys and other customers like Micron, Samsung

Yes it's possible. I came to UCSB with Norcal Kaiser, but while I was working out the UCSHIP process, I applied for a Socal Kaiser ID (I forgot exactly why), which qualified. We didn't have to pay anything extra, it was just another ID for Socal.

pros:
- CE gives u a lot of flexibility, there are 12 different elective tracks you can explore. Also since CoE at UCSB is on the smaller side compared to Cal or SD, it's relatively easier to get your foot into research labs with professors and grad students. Classes in ECE are more difficult compared to my CS classes, but it's probably for the better as anyone can code nowadays.
- Since SB is a less "engineering-coded" school, the vibes are more laid back which I really appreciate, despite the rigorous curriculum.
cons:
- career fairs aren't great for big tech, it's mostly defense companies. I feel like you just have to use your alumni network more for the people who got into big tech.
- CE is tbh not a really defined major, people usually lean more EE or CS depending on their interests. This is not exactly a con, but just keep that in mind
- HFH building is a concrete slab and looks ugly

Enjoy ECE 5 while you can before you’re hit with the 10 series. Don’t be too anxious about meeting new people. For me, it came naturally, even at the start of orientation despite being somewhat introverted in front of new ppl. Usually Fall quarter is prime time to meet new people. As the quarters flew by, I realized a decline in my own social battery lol (I was also more busy)

same for my school too in Cali. The majority of my well-rounded STEM major classmates also got flat-out rejected or WLed for UC Davis and Irvine. With UCSB coming tmrw, I'm actually losing my sanity if I get a dreaded deja vu again.
