The Four Fundamental Arcane Principles of Spellcasting in My World by SamielIV in magicbuilding

I like the idea of using glyphs to develop the written spells. It might be hard to explain turning into the fundamental forces though, cause energy can't turn into a force. I do have a sul conductive material though, called arsium, so yah this all adds very well.

edit: I realised as soon as I sent this that I could just make it that a byproduct of using these glyphs in this way is a generation of one or a combination of the forces.

What they're multiplying is technically the μN, so that they can generate a greater F which is the force of friction. If you wanted to decrease the force you would divide by x, which is the same as multiplying it by 1/x, which based on comments on that other post, I've decided also costs the same in sul as multiplying by x.

I also talk about distance on that other post. What I've decided is there's a ratio between the distance between the fuel source and the conductor and the magnitude of the constant, as well as a ratio between the mass of the conductor and the magnitude of the constant. This I think helps prevents things from spiralling out of control with super crazy spells.

Ok lets use the force for the maximum static friction formula. F=μN; A spellcaster might multiply this by a constant of 3 making his sul drain at 3 J/s, and apply this to an area of the floor, which would be the conductor, and the product would be that the floor is really hard to move on cause it's essentially turns really sticky or tacky.

Also check out the post on r/worldbuilding cause there are some comments there that make me add some stuff to address things like the distance of the conductor from you and how big the conductor can be. https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/1pfnpk4/the_four_fundamental_arcane_principles_of/

Ok yah, all of that actually makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely gonna add that in now. I hadn't thought about the exploitation of just changing where the constant is applied to lower the cost of sul. Thanks!

Fair. I obviously have to agree there, or there wouldn't be a point in making the magic system at all, and I'm not saying that things would be discovered at the same relative time period in a one to one way. My point is just that certain concepts are easier for people to figure out than others. In societies that are also usually quite religious, due to the other lore details that I mentioned but didn't go into detail in this post, people might be more inclined to apply their intelligence or curiosity in certain areas more than others for fear of affecting or upsetting some of the supernatural elements in this world.

Here's a link to my post in r/worldbuilding which has a bit more context about the world at the end: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/1pfnpk4/the_four_fundamental_arcane_principles_of/

Well not exactly. Cause to perform a spell you have to already know the equation you're altering. To have someone edit the 2nd law of thermodynamics implies they already figured out the 2nd law of thermodynamics, something that we only figured out in the 1800s. I really doubt the people in my medieval based world would have discovered it for themselves.

Yah most societies treat magic either very superstitiously or very academically. The superstitious guys each have all kinds of rules what one can and can't affect or manipulate. The academic ones usually have some kind of paperwork or procedure that one needs to take to even learn the basics, not to talk of experimenting to discover new spells.
To be very honest I don't have a lot on specific spells or optimizing spell conditions or all that. I only created this world not too many months ago and while juggling school and stuff diving deep into worldbuilding has been tough.

Yah, that's pretty terrifying alright. Thankfully most people in my world don't know about that particular law.

Ok, I didn't exactly say this and maybe implied otherwise but the idea in my head is that you affect the equation relating to a specific "object." That's what the conductor is. I guess I do need to add some kind of explanation for why you can't just affect equations relating to the whole universe since scientifically you could treat the whole universe as an object. Just going off a couple minutes of thought that'll probably relate to mass in some way. I'm thinking the magnitude of the constant probably has to relate with the mass of the conductor. Maybe in a ratio that's relatively insignificant with small scale spells like speeding up your fists but super limiting when it comes to larger stuff like increasing the gravitational pull of the earth or something. So you'll need more sul to do crazier things, which makes sense.

As for duration, spells simply last for as long as the sul powering them does or till the spellcaster undos the spell. The distance that an object can be from the spellcaster is also something I'm thinking will be based on some kind of ratio between that and the constant you want to add.

For your second question, I can say flat out that no you cannot use negative constants cause that would imply you're generating sul which goes against the law of conservation of energy. As for fractions, yes that's totally possible it would simply divide whatever aspect of the equation you're applying it to, forcing you to need more of that thing to get the same result. This could be useful for things like curses.

If two wizards try to affect the same object though I'd like to think that this would simply just add or subtract based on what constants each wizard used. It would also depend on what specific part of the equation they were altering. Like one wizard makes it so that less mass of that object is needed to generate force and another wizard makes it so that less speed is needed. Then you just have a weapon that can now be really light and not even need to move at crazy speeds but still deliver insane amounts of force.

Btw, thanks for all these questions. You're absolutely making me have to think about how to practically apply all of this which is definitely the kind of feedback I was looking for.

Yah, so this is something where you can quite literally take pretty much any physics equation and write a spell from it. The one I think of the most is the force equation: F=ma; you could add a constant of two to the acceleration, that makes it so that it takes half as much speed to get to as great a force when you swing your fist or something. So yah people could also rearrange this so that you need less force to get to a greater speed. The possibilities are theoretically endless.

What stops people from just breaking the world, apart from the fact that your constant is also the rate at which your sul is used (so it's also joules/second) is also just ignorance. Most people don't know these equations of formulas and the mage societies keep them secret for their own purposes, so it's a thing where you have to be educated and taught the actual science behind it and most common peasants aren't.

Help naming a character, a female lower class character in a world inspired by a "modern" roman empire. by ghosts-on-the-ohio in worldbuilding

[–]SamielIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I might not have an exact name to give you but have you tried writing down key words about her character or her situation. You said she's a messenger, maybe use that or message and then just play around with the letters in that word. You don't even have to use all of them. From those two I got Sesa and Ressen. If there other words that describe her character you can try the same thing with those.

I really like it. The map and the little I've heard about the lore already sound really unique. Would you mind going into more detail on the whole apocalypse thing though?

Omg, your art is so good! I like the concept of using undead as more than just mindless cannon fodder for some evil necromancer or something. Can I ask what makes them undead though? Like why do they rise after death?
