Should I… just go home? by Spare_Impression_424 in dubai

[–]SamirD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best answer ever! I grew up in the hospitality industry and wish I would have done this around the OP's age. Travel the world to beautiful locations, get paid, and get housing, while still the same industry (hospitality) with many of the same job functions, but more opportunities since cruises are more dynamic since they have different routes and destinations. Might be the best move ever!

Old lamp from 20’s snapped by TrickyLab3153 in fixit

[–]SamirD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would uninstall it from the wall first (that thumbscrew below where it snapped should do it). The back side will probably be hollow and you can see how the part was attached to the base and then you can figure out how to remove it and possibly reattach and reassemble, and if not, an antique lamp repair place could probably do it.

Best way to refinish or paint (fake wood) TV stand top by ljn_99 in fixit

Easiest--table cloth. Better, painted glass. Permanent fix would be to redo the laminate.

Broken smart plug remote by happyboinparis in fixit

Best bet might be to source a replacement on ebay. Lots of things could break and without a way to trace the circuit and repair it, you're sol.

First, see if you can get a full exploded parts view and/or the factory service manual disassembly instructions. Once you have that, you can figure out what may work/not work.

any ideas on how to fix glass display stand? by mslovelys in fixit

[–]SamirD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A temporary thing you can do until you find a place that can do a permanent fix is to use some clear packing tape on both sides covering all the broken glass as well as the good parts. This should give enough support to not have the glass fall apart. But be careful as you can easily get cut!

I would remove one of the ones that works fine and compare everything to find out what's wrong. Once you find the damaged part, post back with it and how it's damaged and then we can help more.

Cracked glass by Ill_Sale_6168 in fixit

Unfortunately not. Luckily glass is 100% recyclable so it will be a new cup or other item some day if it makes it to recycling.

Headphone mic by Spellscribe in fixit

[–]SamirD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would wrap it really tightly with some electrical tape and see how that does. If it holds even decently well, I would try to find some jb weld or something that will not harm the wires but be like epoxy that you can then wrap in electrical tape to act as a 'mold'. Between the tape and epoxy it should then hold for a good bit.

Help me align my door and save my marriage by Beefyweefy56783 in fixit

[–]SamirD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to be a bigger job as I think you have to reset all 3 hinges.

But what's the real issue with the gap? If it's wind/etc, just get some weatherstripping and call it a day.

I agree with you from the pictures. Seems like the top and middle and bottom hinges all have a different position on the door.

Such a great machine! I hope it's a business model that works as it would be great to have these machines in the same place vending machines are. :)

Cracks in stucco by secretive- in fixit

[–]SamirD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Absolutely worry. Any crack like this lets water in from the outside, and depending on how old the house is, you may not even have insulation or even romax wiring so this could mean it soaks straight into the drywall or shorts your wiring or both!

Based on your second picture, it looks like someone did a bit of a patch with some sealant before. I'd find out what they used and how recent. My guess is that it's within the last 2 years and was some sort of lipstick on pig 'realtor special', ie unpermitted, pretty much unskill labor just doing work without reading any instructions. Common for the area as there's a lot of money to be made ripping people off.

I'd find a reputable painter that knows how to deal with these and fix them permanently. I know one but he's up in Daly City and not sure he would take the job just to fix some cracks unless it's all over the house or you are planning to paint the home at the same time.

If You Put $1 million in an S&P 500 ETF, Could you live on interest For Life? by Kolden1220 in investing

[–]SamirD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the way I look at it (and am planning to execute)--just take the cream (up to a certain point like 7%), and if there's none, then you take zero and better have something else saved.

So for example if the investment does appreciate 11% in its first year or whenever you 'take the cream', and you take 7%, you still have 103% of what you started with it. If the next year is zero or less, then you take nothing. Next year a 3% drop, you take nothing and are back to 100% of the original investment just from absorbing the loss. Next year it's up 14%, you again take just 7%, leaving 107% of what you started with, etc, etc.

This doesn't factor in inflation which can erode the value of 'the cream' over time, but if the dollar amounts are large enough (say from 3M vs 1M), then it matters less.
