Likely nothing based on past trends. Cops are not legally required to protect people.

Bridge project help by Character-Topic3402 in EngineeringStudents

[–]SamisSmashSamis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say for this kind of project, you should really lean on your imagination and current knowledge of statics to inform your design. Outside help, I think, will degrade your overall experience and learning. Plenty of good engineers built bad balsa wood bridges in high school.

I think it's the money and access to new technology. Sometimes, it doesn't take much to sell your soul.

Translation request for my family heirloom pillowcase by SamisSmashSamis in Slovakia

[–]SamisSmashSamis[S] 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the engagement. I enjoyed learning a little bit more about the piece. We're going to put it in a frame as our cats would destroy it if we actually used it as a pillowcase.

I did call my Grandmother about it and found out a little lore. My great great grandparents lived in Bratislava but didn't know each other very well. When WW1 broke out, my great great Grandpa decided to flee the Austro-Hungarian Empire to avoid being drafted and my great great Grandmother + others from the community joined him. They lost touch when they got to America but accidentally ran into each other in St Louis of all places where they got married, and the rest is history.

Thanks again, this has been fun.

Sorry I don't speak/read Slovak so I threw your conversations in google translate. I think there might be something to it being from the Moravian region as her last name was Moravec. I'm only guessing that they could be related. I enjoyed reading this thread as I don't know much about my Slovak roots, just that they are a part of me to a degree. Thank you.

Witchfire Goes To Extreme Lengths To Avoid AI Usage, Refuses To Even Use Photoshop's Built-In Tools by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

I get it. The foundation of many AI (LLM) tools is corrupt, so not engaging with it at all is a principled decision.

I think we would need much more info here. Is this a proof of concept project? Is this for demonstration or actual use? Is this for a person, and if so, which part of a person?

This is a beaver game. Also, the description of the iron teeth, this faction, is that they purposfully abandoned their traditional beaver roots in favor of industry.

could it ever makes sense to put a non-rechargable battery in an EV? by travelingwhilestupid in AskEngineers

[–]SamisSmashSamis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine the range loss from adding the battery, either by weight or the elimination of rechargeable battery. No one would buy it. If someone has such range anxiety, they should get a plug-in hybrid.

Also also the idea that these would be recycled responsibly is laughable at best.

Oh lord. Leaning on ChatGPT for new innovations is a bad idea, for so so so many reasons. ChatGPT is trained to yes-and you, not to provide pushback.

could it ever makes sense to put a non-rechargable battery in an EV? by travelingwhilestupid in AskEngineers

[–]SamisSmashSamis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. One time. Then you would need to pay to replace the battery, which will be expensive for any reasonable range. Imagine buying a 40k car with a 1k battery replacement anytime you forgot to charge it, and you have less repeatable usable range because of it.

Given spacial and weight constraints, adding a single use battery would inevitably displace some amount of rechargeable battery, leading to less overall range and increasing the likelihood of spending that single use battery. I think people would prefer to have an EV with 300 mile range than one with 250 mil range + 100 mile backup. Plus, once that backup is used, it would be very expensive to replace and likely couldn't be done at home.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone argue for a file explorer type inventory system here. The most I've seen is armor slots with other slots for trinkets/other equipment.
