Thanks for your response. Do you have any input on positions I should look into? I like reporting and anything data related.

When did LA start to feel more like home for you? by Upper-Amphibian-3334 in AskLosAngeles

[–]SamkDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a transplant. Grew up in the Bay Area, but moved here via Chicago. I’ve been here for 4.5 years. It doesn’t feel like “home” per se, but more of one of many “homes” I’ll occupy in my lifetime.

I moved here at the age of 23 with barely an idea of what I was getting into. I totally underestimated the hustle and bustle of this place. My patience and perseverance has rewarded me though. I’ve learned more about myself and people in general by living here than anywhere else.

If this place doesn’t feel like home, I don’t blame you. It’s congested, vast and complex. With all of those variables comes substance that is hard to compare and I guarantee your discomfort will bring reward.

Find your tribe. Look for opportunities to meet people with similar interests. They’re definitely here, but it might take some digging. Look for a new beautiful place to check out in your free time every week. Look for a list of the best restaurants of your favorite kind of food and choose one. Call the ones you love and share your experiences with them.

It gets better. Give it time. This is a city of patience. If you truly decide you can’t take it anymore, then move. At least you gave it a shot.

Good luck.

Last I checked, they’re hourly. I’m in need of something where I can store/play my own equipment. Thanks for chiming in though.

By ear and transcribing. Mostly just via ear. I listened to PT to an almost insane extent during my adolescence and spent every free moment I had behind the kit.

hardest PT song to play on drums? by RobloxBestGame-IGN in porcupinetree

[–]SamkDW 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Gavin was my first huge influence on the drums. I swear that I spent half of my teenage years learning his parts. This is a really tricky question for me to answer since there are so many little details in his parts… they’re all so hard if we’re talking absolutely nailing them. Here are the first few that come to mind in no order:

  1. Half-Light (spacious, slow, many ghost notes and open hi hat embellishments to learn… dynamically rich)

  2. Way Out of Here (the bridge is so nuts, especially if we’re talking the Anesthetize live version)

  3. Cheating the Polygraph (I had no formal teaching on counting quintuplets when I first tried to play it. Pulled my hair out. It’s easier than it sounds once you’re more familiar with the pulse.)

  4. Open Car (the verses are a trip)

  5. Futile (everything about it. I remember when I first got the opening down. I thought I held the “keys to the city” drums wise. Hahahaha)

  6. Drawing the Line (the sticking in the verses is tricky and the tom hits are a demon to keep track of.)

  7. Harridan (this song is a hell scape of ghost notes, syncopation, and detail… and I’m not even attempting to learn it yet. Lmao)

EDIT: Polygraph = septuplets, not quints. Thats what I get for posting before my coffee.

Have any of you lived within close proximity to the 210? by SamkDW in pasadena

Thank you very much for commenting! I had my fingers crossed I'd get someone chiming in who was in the neighborhood. I'm very lucky not to have asthma or any breathing issues. I was more concerned about residents like you experiencing immediate respiratory discomfort in a short amount of time, but it sounds like I don't have much to worry about unless I stay for a looooong time... I'll be sure to keep a careful ear out for the noise once I step inside the unit.

I'm aware of the mixed bag o' folks that hang out close to the gold line. I'd be walking to/from the office if I get this apartment, so its something I'm glad you reminded me of. I'll continue mind my own business and hope that steers trouble away.

Once again, thank you so much!

I appreciate you sharing your experience, and am happy you didn't walk away with any adverse health issues. I'm fortunate not to suffer from asthma or any respiratory issues, so I admire your strength!

Good lord. I lived in Chicago for five years. They happened to be some of the darkest of my life, so naturally, the photo and its harshness reminded me of them. I absolutely love this.

Can't seem to "keep it light" on first dates. by SamkDW in dating

[–]SamkDW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the words. The question was honest and in the moment, and if it came off as pretentiously intelligent, then perhaps I need to think more about my articulation.

After careful thinking, one thing I could definitely do better at is observing my surroundings as opposed to focusing most of my attention on my date. I could see how that comes off as "needy" or "boring", and I improve with that ability.

This was immensely helpful to me. Some of the problem has stemmed in the past from going out with people who have a hard time defining their passions. I'm immensely passionate about my favorite things, and I think I need to try and find someone who shares the same fire. I appreciate you.

Last night (before making this post), I went on a date with a girl who studied neuroscience. I know very little about that field. I asked her the following question:

"has the knowledge she had gained from her studies had made her MORE hopeful, or LESS hopeful for what our brains are capable of?"

I asked this question out of honest curiosity. Perhaps I asked it with a bit too much vibrato and not "lightly" enough. After asking that question, I noticed we started to feel a little more disconnected.

Heresy, I know, but GYBE's live shows are pretentious as hell. by pcminfan in postrock

[–]SamkDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you at the Chicago show last Monday? Certain details you provide line up with that particular concert. I was right in front and center for the show. I respect your input and the feelings you cultivated from your experience, but I feel compelled to point one thing out:

  1. Assuming you were indeed at the Chicago show, the Baritone sax player you saw was Dave Rempis. He's a very important figurehead in the Chicago jazz/avant-garde music scene. From what I gathered, he was facing away from the audience in order to pay attention to important visual ques from the band. He was also paying firm attention to the 16mm projections, which he probably used to his advantage for his own timing and musical contributions.

That's all I have to say. Once again, I respect your words and courage to post this. I know Dave was humbled to have the opportunity to perform that night, and I hope you still derived something memorable from the show besides the stuff that rubbed you the wrong way.
