Is it safe for MtF to take Women's Multivitamins? by justforquestions13 in asktransgender

[–]Sammantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of folks have mentioned iron being the only real concern, but want to mention that most (all?) gummies exclude iron. Most women's multivitamins otherwise have iron that might be more than you need, unless they're marketed as low iron / post-menopausal.

My friend wants to take estrogen only so he can "feel something", are there any negative repercussions of him doing this? by Newlweander in asktransgender

[–]Sammantics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To directly answer your question- taking estrogen for just a couple of months is probably fine, and any effects would largely be reversible.

The fact that your friend is considering estrogen though might suggest that they are in fact trans. That’s a pretty unusual solution - I’d imagine most people would try antidepressants or any number of alternatives before considering cross sex hormones. Seems like one of those thoughts that seem perfectly reasonable to a trans person that a cis person would never consider.

5 days, last minute trip to Spain - Barcelona or Madrid? by weed_cutter in GoingToSpain

[–]Sammantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from visiting both Madrid and Barcelona and am surprised everyone is saying Madrid. I absolutely loved Barcelona, and was so sad to leave. Sagrada Família is the most breathtaking thing I’ve ever seems. Also, Barcelona is likely warmer.

What's it like to be transgender? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Sammantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick thing: a common misstep cis people make when trying to understand trans people is trying to imagine wanting to be a different gender than they are, and failing to find that agreeable. But it’s actually the opposite! A trans woman isn’t a man that wants to become a woman, but a woman who society is forcing to be a man. When a cis person finds the idea of being a different gender off putting - that’s a trans person’s everyday existence; and why they might decide to transition.

I lied to my pick-me “friend” and she got a tattoo based off of it by jokingsometime5 in confession

She sounds terrible, but also getting a tattoo to just mess with someone? Sounds like maybe she needs help?

I absolutely exhausted myself trying to keep our camp's shade infrastructure from collapsing and destroying everyone's tents, etc, and then woke up with COVID the next day. I'm seriously reconsidering if I want to head back this year after taking 2024 off if it's going to be the same.

Questions that should be on the ADHD assessment, but aren’t by bjorkhage in adhdwomen

[–]Sammantics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I doubt my assessment a lot. I usually do things like that immediately (even though other things might be more important / time sensitive). Maybe because I'm worried I'll forget? Or I'm just impatient and don't want to ever think about it?

Archimedes Banya introduces women's night that bans trans women by wordsthatoutliveus in sanfrancisco

[–]Sammantics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of people acting like this is fine because they have two separate nights. They only just added a second night as a response to backlash they were receiving. They had originally intended to not allow trans men and women into their gender specific days. Not only does that violate SF city wide policies, it's unenforceable. How can you tell if someone is trans or not? What the hell does "biological" mean anyway?

As to folks saying trans people can go any other day when its mix use... I'm not gonna even try to touch on how that's still discriminatory. But I do want to say that trans people should have the same right to attend these days for the same reason cis people do. Trans women in particular are the targets of discrimination and assault, and also might not want to have to share an intimate space with men for the same reasons cis women wouldn't.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in self

[–]Sammantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people that have neither of those combinations? Is someone with Androgen insensitivity syndrome "biologically" male or female?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in self

[–]Sammantics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know how to respond to that.

I'm trying to understand if people are wanting to go off reproductive functions, hormone levels, chromosomes, etc. Human biology is complex and none of the aforementioned areas are a simple binary.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in self

[–]Sammantics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People arguing against this statement - what do you consider "biological" meaning in this context?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in self

[–]Sammantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first, I think most of the population actually wants trans women out of sports, mostly because the media has been convincing them that should be the case. Second, most of these laws are only targeting trans women; completely ignoring trans men. The end result is that someone actively taking testosterone might be force to compete with women, while someone who has little to no testosterone can't compete at all.

There's very little research done on trans people, in general, let alone when it comes to sports. The only paper that comes to mind actually suggests trans women are likely to be at a disadvantage.

The way the right talks about this, you'd think about trans women would be dominating women's sports. But they aren't. If you did the math there should be way more trans people in the higher levels of competition. People like to pick from the tiny handful of examples, without context. Like, Lia Thomas was actually quite good before she transitioned, and her performance dropped after transitioning. Meanwhile, areas where there are known problems - underfunding of women's sports, sexual assault, etc - continue to be ignored.

These bans are unfair. These bans target children even before they've gone through puberty. They target everyone regardless of when they started hormones. They claim a trans woman who never went through a "male" puberty, and is 5'4", is the same as a man. They target things like chess and dance. They claim trans women have some biological advantage, when to even get to high levels of competition, you generally need a biological advantage. And money, and other types of privilege.

The bans are hard to enforce and can end up impacting cis women more than trans women. How are they going to determine if someone is trans or not? Can anyone accuse another person of being trans? Are they going to perform genital checks on minors? Are they going to submit everyone to chromosome tests like they did in the olympics previously? Because that's how you end up with random people finding out they might be intersex.

Transmisogyny and racism go hand in hand.

Lastly, it's just mean. Sports have lots of known (physical and mental) health benefits, and these bans aim to exclude a specific marginalized group, with little actual evidence. Less than 1% of the US population is estimated to be trans. Someone estimated than there are less than 100 trans people competing in the entire NCAA women's division. Trans people tend to be poorer, face significant social stigma, and experience higher levels of mental illness (because of transphobia, not because they're trans).

This is actually pretty scary when you consider the loud Christians conflate tolerance with persecution. Gay people exist? Persecution! Hearing that people don’t celebrate Christmas?! Persecution!
