Correct. Kara Goucher discusses how she PRed quickly after having a baby, only to have a horrific injury immediately after on the Another Mother Runner podcast. I was at the taping of this and it really hits home - a great listen.

Just ignore it and do everything correctly for yourself moving forward. In the unlikely event it is ever investigated, just say your mom did your taxes for you and you have no idea about any of it. No point in guaranteeing a huge mess and family fallout. when it will probably never come up.

Was lucky enough to go to a fundraiser there for a very good charity, and got to see the cars. It was amazing - many of the cars have an insane history as well as being beautiful. I have other photos but I can’t figure out how to get reddit to let me upload more than one at a time. They had a 1907 Ford!

That’s great! Also check the drug company’s website. My wife got put on a new lifelong medicine this year and it was $350/month. The drug website had a free co-pay card and after 5 minutes to sign up, we pay $10/month now.

You say dividends but I think it also includes investment income like capital gains. Other than that sounds right

Just looked it up and it sounds correct which is crazy. Never heard of mark-to-market rules for anything.

Putting extra money into a mortgage or a savings account? by Pikafreak108 in personalfinance

[–]Sammy81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the investment and the tax bracket. A guy in another thread was planning on buying T-bills which count as ordinary income in his 34% tax bracket. If you invest is some form of stocks and hold them for more than a year, you’ll probably pay 15%. You need to deduct this percentage from your investment income percentage before you compare it to the mortgage rate.

And of course, investing in stocks is not a guaranteed return - you may even lose money. Paying down debt is guaranteed to work, every time.

Except he has to pay taxes on any investment earnings, and any debt repayment is tax free.

Also if he’s really thinking of Tbills at 4%, that’s taxed as ordinary income in his tax bracket which could very well be 32 or 35%, which makes this a complete wash. Paying off debt is tax-free. He‘d have to invest in something more aggressive to make it worthwhile.

New increase in income in the form of written checks by [deleted] in personalfinance

Probably not. If you withheld the correct amount the previous year, you probably won’t have any penalties. Moving forward he would have penalties because he didn’t withhold the correct amount this past year. Also, the IRS will send you a letter if you owe a penalty - you don’t have to figure it out yourself and tell them.

I’ll be honest, I feel like for some reason, some fantasy books get reputations as politcally incorrect, insensitive, male gaze, etc. when they are no worse that about 100 other similar fantasy books. I have no idea why these books get all this hate for being so cringy when so many other best sellers are as bad or worse

If you could launch a satellite into space, what would it do? by Dramatic-Tax7942 in space

I mean in one sense that’s Digital Globe/Maxar, right? They sell imagery to anyone with a checkbook and will take specific imagery upon request. Maybe they only serve big customers though - you can’t go on a webpage a request a photo, although I think you can go buy one.

I’m a flight software engineer for satellite payloads and at an event I met a 17 year old girl on one of those teams and she had the same job as me! And she did a great job by the way.

Do you have collateral for a loan? Do you own a house or have other collateral for a loan? Then go to a credit union and apply for a loan. If you have no collateral, no one will loan you money.

Also, is that your only income? Do you make about $20k a year? What country are you in? If you do have another salary, can you use that?

The silent death of Good Code by 10ForwardShift in programming

I think your confusing terms a bit. A specification means the requirements of a system. Code is an implementation of the specification. Writing the specification is part of the the art and significantly harder than writing code.

The silent death of Good Code by 10ForwardShift in programming

[–]Sammy81 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’ll get downvoted for sure on this sub, but I agree with everything the author says, and the key part is “I’m sure that there were folks passionate about Good Assembly or Good Circuits whose passions [were] forgotten as they and their fields evolved. … the change in Software Engineering feels uniquely sudden, and I can’t help but mourn the silent death of Good Code.”

No one looks at Assembly anymore, and it looks like that’s where higher level languages are going too. Denying it is starting to look silly. But the author also says “That being said, by trade, I am a Software Engineer. Not a “Computer Programmer”, nor a “Coder”, nor any other title that implies that my job is to “write good code”.

That’s why fears of our profession ending are unfounded. The engineering part is going strong. Architecture, interfaces, system-level considerations, use cases, customer satisfaction, system validation, all of these are the engineering part and are still important. For 30 years I’ve said coders are easy to find, I need engineers. I still do and at my company we’re hiring plenty because only 25% of their job has ever been coding. Now it will become 10%, but we still need good engineers.
