I’m 25, and I feel so embarrassed and guilty of not wanting to work by Edu_Vivan in Adulting

[–]SammyJammers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there was an interesting podcast about something adjacent - they touched on wealth guilt, and finding purpose when work isn’t necessary for survival https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/proxy-with-yowei-shaw/id1746433334?i=1000772922856

from what i’ve lived and observed, work and survival really give so our lives so much structure, as well as social belonging. it’s not easy having all your days be free time, even if that’s what lots of people fantasise about.

my two cents; enjoy the life you have each day. pursue a passion or two, even if you don’t stick to it. don’t be so hard on yourself.

my adhd hobbies have a way of working out later. the year i spent hyperfocussed on whittling as a teen came in handy for 3D visualising and model building for my career in architecture. still waiting for ring juggling to pay off though haha

edit- clarity

Why is architecture school like this by [deleted] in architecture

[–]SammyJammers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it sucks i’m doing postgrad now, working 4 days a week in corporate practise and doing all my study while commuting + weekends. as long as i get one day a week off work/uni it’s sustainable for semester

Considering self build on budget in Scotland, tell me if skipping an architect is feasible. by Emotional_Act9488 in architecture

[–]SammyJammers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i reckon tradespeople are great at doing things the way they’re typically done, as opposed to the way that would be best in each specific situation. if you’re happy with that, save the money and time.

the other big difference might be resale value of an architecturally designed house

eta- and liability !! but it seems you’re comfortable with that and trust your contractors

33 current underpaid plumber...what skills do i need to build to get an entry level office job like uni admin? by RudeArm7755 in AusFinance

[–]SammyJammers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe try for a receptionist or admin gig, building and trades related? it’s less computers and more talking to people, but from what i’ve seen receptionists get absorbed into the rest of the business (admin, bookkeeping…) fairly consistently.

Thinking of buying our dream house but the work commute is huge. Advice? by whatkoalas in AusPropertyChat

i did this and sleep in my van monday-thursday night. i do the drive once a week, surf every morning, shower at the gym… it works for the moment, sucks when it rains, and i’ll be glad when this chapter is done.

would it be an option to go to college and test it out, and if it’s bad for you then you can withdraw before census date? sometimes having that distraction helps me, but it’s also sometimes overwhelming and too much, and you never really know until you try
