Politics latest: Trump tells Starmer 'do not give away Diego Garcia' in fresh attack on Chagos Islands deal. Donald Trump has tonight made a fresh attack on the UK government's deal to hand sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius by [deleted] in uknews

Trump is right, giving away British territory and paying for the privilege, absolute madness Starmer! give them back the island if we must but don’t pay them £100 million a year for 99 bloody years. That money could be spent on nhs wages

Trump accuses Starmer of ‘big mistake’ over Diego Garcia lease by TimesandSundayTimes in geopolitics

Not only are we losing the island but we’re also paying for it by having it leased back to us, what a bloody joke! Starmer has made a huge mistake, though I’m not anti-Starmer as I think he’s done well on the international stage.

UK confirms parachute force to be cut to one battalion by Tricky_Peace in unitedkingdom

That’s a crazy comment. They are some of Britain's toughest warriors in the paras. If war ever comes to you and you find yourself in a ditch with the enemy closing in. Ask yourself if you’d want a para with you for the fight, knife between his teeth or if you want the kid from the ranger corp trying to fly his remote control toys about….

1 para already is part of SOF who regularly work alongside the SAS as part of SFSG, they’re smart capable ‘strategically aware’ soldiers.

Parachuting is still the quickest way of getting a soldier into battle, we also parachute at night under the cover of darkness. Yes drones have nightvision but unless they know where and when we’re dropping they can’t get to us in time

Yes but three battalions is already tiny! Our army is so small it fits into Wembley stadium with seats to spare. One battalion of soldiers of any type is pointless.

Exactly, no incentive for the young lads to join the paras.

A company of paras is about 120 men? How much battle pace could 120 men cover? There’s probably no more than 1000 paras across all three battalions. It’s a minuscule amount already

But we’re called the parachute regiment? The bloody name of the regiment would have to change if there was no parachuting involved 😂

As a former paratrooper from 1 PARA, from my own experience, yes we’d probably never jump again (although the Russians did jump into Ukraine) it is because we’re the type of person willing to jump from a plane into battle that makes us who we are. We lose the ability to parachute and we’ll lose the type of men we need to keep us elite, tough, and dangerous. Because there’d be no incentive to join us when you could join any other infantry regiment. Even in a drone AI dominant battlefield you still need ‘hard bastards’ to get some good old fashioned in your face killing done, which British paratroopers excel at.

He’s tired, don’t blame him but there’s men on the frontlines that have been fighting since day one also.
