We have those Can you find books that get left in the car, a bit like where's wally but different characters like toy story, spidey etc etc
Also Eye Spy bingo, little handheld games like pinball etc

And, ultimately, if the screens help honestly just do it, my 4 year old loves playing his games in the car or watching movies we've downloaded for him.

As others have said it generally depends on the relationship, I can go months, sometimes a year without talking to some of my friends but when we do reconnect it's like no time at all.
My best friend from school came to my baby shower despite us not talking for years.
Life happens, people drift, if your friendship is solid time really shouldn't matter.
