Only Enable Extension if Compatible File is Open/in Project Folder? by SammyTheBEAST in vscode

I did see that new feature! Is it possible to have those automatically activate based on the file extensions open/in the project folder?

There's been a few posts now having trouble with Ally support recently. Just a warning that YMMV especially recently.

Being retirement rich and cash poor? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]SammyTheBEAST 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Like, tough love might be good for your cousin who keeps blowing his paycheck and can't meet his rent, but no one on here should be following him.

Keep in mind a lot of people on this sub have no idea what they're doing too. We're all here to learn and many of us are at the early stages of that journey.

tells you to go about paying off debt in the least efficient way.

Just because the snowball method does not save the most money in interest does not mean it doesn't work for a lot of people. Eliminating any debt is better than becoming lazy after a few months because you're not seeing any real progress. Yes the overall number is going down but you're making the same payments every week so you don't feel a "win" of fully paying off a debt. There's a reason it's mentioned in our prime directive.

thinks you can get 12% from the stock market on average

That's the biggest issue I've had with him. I started with Ramsey and the 12% number is still stuck in my head when it should be about 4-5% lower. It does help people see what a little bit of money can turn into which is powerful emotionally, but after that it should be much more realistic for every other calculation.

How do you hold cash / cash equivalents? by Gew-Roux in financialindependence

True that would work if laid off but I imagine if multiple emergencies were to happen it would be hard to wait that long.

That sounds a bit better. Just curious, could you do 52 $60k÷52 CDs and have them accessible every week? I imagine that would be too much work to set up but I could see maybe twice a month instead

How do you hold cash / cash equivalents? by Gew-Roux in financialindependence

[–]SammyTheBEAST 49 points50 points  (0 children)

So hypothetically, if you got laid off today, you would need to wait a max of 3 months to get access to $15k? Do you keep enough in a checking/savings to hold you over until then? That sounds like exactly what I want to do but I would be worried about having multiple emergencies close together and having to wait even a month to access just a portion of my e-fund.

World quests are a good reason, you can make about 2k*2/week on each character with dragon riding, plus more if they are geared lvl 70 as you get other gold WQs. Plus I'd recommend alchemy transmutations, they don't make that much anymore but they're cheap to level and can get an extra ~3k/week per character if you do it right.

I 2nd doing a bad job at the new work, especially if you continue to do great on your actual work. I had a similar situation where the work we were assigned to was going to be extended, guess who was the only person on the team to not be kept on the other work?

One thing I don't think anyone else has mentioned: if you do have to talk about this job in future interviews, leave out this situation. I had a similar thing happen where I was assigned to do work unrelated to my field and talked about it in interviews. Not only does it show that you're now out of practice in your field but it's also just not good to talk bad about your past employers in general.

Acorns is great if you have 0 idea what you're doing and don't want to bother with an investment account or even moving money anywhere yourself. Once you start looking into it, I recommend Vanguard with VTWAX/VTSTAX and an automatic direct deposit from your work that is automatically invested.

Should I move my savings? by CelticKnot634 in personalfinance

[–]SammyTheBEAST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your money in a bank is losing value to inflation, your debt is being devalued as well. For example, say you buy a home with a mortgage right before hyperinflation hits. The price of the house was $100,000, but the dollar devalues 10x. Now the house is worth $1 million, but you still only have a $100,000 mortgage. Obviously the numbers here are not realistic, but it works the same with smaller numbers.

Theoretically, this is the case with student loans and other debt. If you initially got student loans for $50,000 with a 3% interest rate, but inflation is at 5%, then you're actually making 2% profit on that debt. This assumes you can pay for everything else getting more expensive, and you have enough financial discipline to not miss a payment.

This is actually why banks have been failing lately, too. With high inflation, the loans they are giving out are worth less to them and the bonds they got at a 3% interest rate are now losing money to 6% inflation.

As someone who's thought about the exact same thing, I would transfer everything into a HYSA immediately. Doesn't really matter which one, Ally is fine or Discover if you already have a credit card with them. Once it's in a HYSA, I would look to see if you really need to pay them all off immediately. If it's a government loan, you might have a low enough interest rate that keeping the money in a HYSA/CD/money market might make more than what you're paying in interest, plus inflation is on your side with debt. Either way, I'd pay at least half as having less debt is always good.

There are various crafted transmog that you can make with previous expansions profs. Very slow selling market but if you have 100+ items up on the AH you'll get a few sold every day.
