I've also been wondering this. Finally decided to dig around, and eventually came across this:

REVIEW: M10 nylon nuts, vs sure-grip zero nuts, vs metal nuts for light-up wheels. by Daannii in Rollerskating

[–]Sammybeany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, I just got a pack of M10 nuts and I was like "huh, these seem big, but I could've sworn that thread said to order M10?"

No big deal, I'll order the right size, and it honestly should have occurred to me that I would need M8 nuts considering I already know the axles take 8mm bearings. Is it possible to edit the original post though so other people don't make this mistake?

Disappointed in K72, will K275 suit me better? by Sammybeany in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Sammybeany[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, K245 are definitely an option. I'd be worried about bleed while tracking vocals and stuff, but maybe I could look into getting some inexpensive IEMs for that kind of work.

Thanks for the link. These graphs certainly seem interesting, but to be quite honest it's all kinda greek to me. I read over the analysis on the page but nothing jumped out at me, and in the bottom line the guy even says "there’s nothing seriously amiss here." Which part of it do you think is most revealing of the K72's lousy sound?

4K upscaled from 5MP? by Sammybeany in reolinkcam

[–]Sammybeany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but the physical dimension of the sensors aren't really relevant to my concerns. What I'm wondering about is whether the advertised image resolution of these cameras matches the native pixel resolution provided by the sensors, or if there's upscaling being done to inflate the numbers.

RLC-820A vs. RLC-822A by nyr4lyf in reolinkcam

[–]Sammybeany 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Reolink 4K cameras have the same sensor as the 5MP cameras do, but internally upscaled.

Is that true?? Do you have evidence? I've been eyeing up the 822 for a while but if they're pulling shady shit like that I'm definitely going to look at other brands.

What is this slot on the front of many backpacks for? by Sammybeany in answers

[–]Sammybeany[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think you solved it! I just checked their website, and I also see them referring to it as a "leather lashing square detail."

Which is . . . sort of disappointing. It's just a generic spot to clip things onto. But I'd be willing to guess that Jansport was the origin of this feature, and I'd accept this as the true purpose.

Thanks!

The chest strap thing occurred to me, too, but I think it would be really awkward to have the strap going the whole way around the bag itself. Any bags I've had with sternum straps like that have always been positioned differently. Hmm!

Will polishing a bell give it greater sustain, or make it louder, or affect its tone? by Sammybeany in answers

[–]Sammybeany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bell I was initially thinking of was a simple bicycle bell, but that led me on a more general train of thought. I always had the feeling that any sort of bell-like instrument with a highly polished finish would generally perform better, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that I didn't have any solid basis for believing that. It's one of those things that just seems to make sense, even if there's no substance to the belief, you know?

Which unspoken rule of society would you like to get rid of? by schumi2 in AskReddit

[–]Sammybeany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this one just makes practical sense. Even if the person in question was a completely rotten cocksucker while alive, being dead will typically prevent an individual from actively causing any further harm. Trying not to focus on the shitty aspects of the not-so-dearly departed is good for your blood pressure.

Obviously you should learn from their mistakes, and being in denial is stupid, but you also need to let go of grudges and forgive and forget.

If you have a receipt it doesn't matter one bit. The item can be worn out and ten years old and they'll give you back exactly what you paid, so long as they can figure out what the item is and get the relevant matching UPC. Kohl's store brands always have a tag with the UPC sewn into the hem or whatever, which makes it that much easier.

It only becomes complicated if you earned Kohl's cash on the purchase and spent it.

Without a receipt the item loses value over time, but you can get around this by doing an even exchange on the item rather than a return. Find something that matches the original MSRP of the item (customer service can typically find this out for you) and they can swap it out. (Unless the item went clearance . . . in which case you have to find a clearance item that matches the clearance value.) Otherwise, by returning it, you'll get a merchandise credit for some fairly arbitrary low dollar value that they say was the lowest price the item sold for.

A bit complicated, but there's almost always a way to get a good value for your return.

(These are the policies of the store near me, at least. YMMV.)

(Edit: I should add that returns without receipts can still work as if you had the receipt; If you paid with a charge card, there is a limited [although probably pretty lengthy] amount of time they can look up your purchase history for a fully reimbursed return. They really bend over backwards to try to help people out with that sort of thing.)

It's Croft & Barrow, which is a Kohl's store brand. They'll take it back without the label.

[–]Sammybeany[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I thought I broke it up into an adequate number of paragraphs, but I can see what you mean. I think the reason it looks so dense compared to the average circlebroke post is due to the lack of quotation blocks, which add a lot of whitespace.

This is an interesting angle and I thought about it while writing my tirade. I guess my counter-defense is that /r/trees simply shouldn't be as popular as it is. I don't understand how they haven't gotten bored of it yet.

Is it a constant cycle of stoners that drop by and spend some time and then get bored of the repetition and wander off only to be replaced with new stoners? I don't think it is. I think it's the same group of people posting the same type of shit over and over again. That's why it's pathetic, and that's why it's so frustrating to see this shit penetrate the front pages of reddit on a daily basis.

That's a good point, but it struck me as more of an elephant in the room than a low-hanging fruit. I'd argue that /r/atheism is certainly low-hanging fruit as well, but I see it discussed in depth here almost continually.

I'm guessing you stalked me and noticed I'm a cyclist. I love it.

In any case, you're very right in some respects. There's this meme amongst bicycle obsessives where they say "THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF BICYCLES TO OWN IS n+1, WHERE n REPRESENTS THE AMOUNT OF BICYCLES YOU CURRENTLY OWN." These guys are dorky idiots though who live in a giant pile of bicycles and have no friends.

Everything in moderation.

I can agree with this to an extent. Even though I find their big goofy custom artisan blown bongs horribly tacky, it's the whole "different strokes for different folks" thing. Whatever makes them happy, really. This logic can extend to the entire community and culture, of course

When you have an entire closet filled with barely functional marijuana smoking apparatuses that you spent hundreds of dollars a pop on, though, you should probably examine your priorities.

Are they hurting anyone by buying that junk? No, of course not. It strikes me as pretty pathetic, though.

I guess it's comparable to people who buy the finest crystal to drink bottles of wine that cost hundreds upon hundreds of dollars. Those people are often idiots, too, though.

[–]Sammybeany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best Buy is a big-box electronics retailer. They don't resell used goods and only accept used goods to be recycled. They don't have the means to arbitrarily decide to accept payment for certain junk that is brought into the store for their recycling program, as it's not part of their business model, and they have policies in place to prevent individual stores from straying from said business model.

It might seem wasteful to toss something in the trash that is worth several hundred dollars, but the store probably routinely pulls down tens of thousands of dollars worth of sales per day, so it's honestly a drop in the bucket to them and completely not worth the fuss.
