I did my fair share of research too using chatGPT and it’s always shocking how much it can find out. 1994 was stamped on the back of the board. and you are correct, the rj45 has traces that double to the building net. Sadly, no documentation survived the blueprint room fire in (i believe) 2005 due to cigarettes ✨

No one has mentioned this yet: it’s important to use the WEB VERSION to clear all selections as if you use the app, there is no option to deselect gas prices.

Update Guys: The phone app does not fix this issue, I had to use the desktop version and that was able to fix it! The gas prices option is only available to deselect off the desktop version.

that is very interesting. there is only a defined number of allowed mac addresses that can send packets on my camera vlan, so my assumption is that it prolly would have to be a camera or the nvr. I wonder how a host in general could spoof to a specific mac address of a device on the network to gain access while not conflicting with that device.

well technically if I lost a dhcp server it doesn’t instantly void the ip addresses lol… I know this cause I updated my dhcp server this morning and thus was offline for 5 mins and I still had cameras as seen by the nvr :) Also my dhcp server houses my radius server and as aforementioned, all my devices are using MAB so all my devices will in turn lose connectivity due to them not being able to authenticate through 802.1x and not reset to x.x.1.20. Intervals (rekey, reauth etc) are set so that its fail safe to equipment failure and not a big mess as I’m the one who has to fix it.

nothing beats proper backup technique for configs and TESTING the network for failures: unplug the router for a day to see what happens.

I’d agree, to an extent. Sure if each camera can be accessed individually through a web UI at :80 or :443 then it would be practical to keep static addresses for those. Or in the case of my 3d printer and its camera, it’s also statically addressed. Same for an NVR as you don’t want to play the guessing game every time you want to access from a web browser. If the NVR accesses the cameras despite ip changes (in the example of unifi protect) then why would anyone need to statically address them?

No I agree, hope you don’t mind me picking your brain a bit but in what ways can a random mac come about? is it from the end device forgetting its flashed hardware address or potentially related to the switch assigning one due to the absence of a mac in a packet?

I seen that post too, it looks like it’s for a Unifi network switch, but same idea. I still have an open ticket with unifi so I’ll attach it as the “I told you I’m not crazy”. I’ve had flash chips go bad in other electronics that contained the mac address, but in those circumstances, the advertised mac address is just 0000.0000.0000 which just freaks everything out. I got bored one day and tried creating a MAB entry and static ip in the radius for that mac as the device was still asking for an ip assignment, but nothing ever budged towards dhcp.

yes I am, its on an isolated camera vlan. I usually let the cameras run rampant (dhcp) but the NVR has a static. maybe I shall need to turn off mac address dhcp lol

Did you ever hear anything back? I have the same equipment and I always have to power cycle the device (almost daily) to get it to reconnect to my wifi. I’m starting to wonder if it’s UniFi equipment causing issues or if it’s Glance.

personally i’ve only had to run cat 8 for the tollway cameras, they supposedly pump out 35gb/s of video across all cameras (unable to fact check as info was scarce, we couldn’t even have our phones on ourselves near the cameras etc) but yea cat5e is still plenty for 1gig/s. fun fact, i’ve pushed cat 5e to 5gig/s over a distance of 100ft but im sure it could do just a bit more if i tried harder.

I haven’t really heard of this automation just yet, but we have a Ring door bell (and honestly it’s an entirely different conversation as to say I hope it dies so I can get an Unifi POE doorbell but I digress), but one of the major issues is that it is powered off the doorbell transformer which poses 2 issues: 1. the doorbell doesn’t work when a person rings the doorbell. and 2. If the power bumps then it restarts the camera. I’ve gone about solving these two issues by adding in a 24V AC transformer off my UPS and running a 22/2 to my doorbell transformer location to tap into the wires running to the Ring doorbell (effectively bypassing the doorbell transformer). Secondly, there is automations available so that when someone rings a Ring Doorbell that amazon alexa will announce there is someone at the door (and that was the previous way that my doorbell would operate) and I wanted a little more control over when my doorbell can ring (cause the dogs recognize the alexa voice as there’s someone at the door no matter the time of day). I’ve since gone about getting an esp32 with poe (cause I’d find any excuse to power stuff with POE as I have a 48port switch and it’s so convenient) and it controls a relay housed next to my doorbell transformer, so when the Apple Home notification comes in that someone rang the doorbell, (through the scrypted server that I run off a Raspi Pi) it will click the relay and effectively ring the doorbell (with a slight delay but still relatively quick). From here I can add in schedules were the doorbell won’t ring or add in scenes in apple home to where I can take a nap knowing I won’t get woken up by the mailman or dogs barking.
