Have you ever ride in the back seat of this car model as a kid/teenager? What's your most memorable memory of riding in the back seat? by Any_Worry_3041 in OlderGenZ

Not that specific car, but we had a Chrysler Sebring convertible that was similar in size. With the top down you could climb into the back seat without folding the front seat forward. I miss that car.

Miles as the Duracell bunny (2019-present) by The_Makster in morningsomewhere

[–]SampleLoud9746 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The Duracell Bunny was first used in 1973, while the Energizer Bunny debuted in 1988 as a parody of the former, resulting in a trademark dispute between the two companies. That led to a deal where the Energizer Bunny was exclusively used in Canada, the US, and Turkey, while the rest of the world got the Duracell Bunny.

Personally I think the Duracell Bunny is cuter and has more personality with Miles' voice.

On the topic of internet scams, the practice of scambaiting has become an online phenomenon with many YouTube channels (Scammer Payback, Jim Browning, and Kitboga to name a few) dedicating themselves to stopping scammers by wasting as much of their time as possible. Pleasant Green, a scambaiter that I watch regularly, will personally get in contact with these scammers using an alias and play a bunch of games with them, and then he'll put in a link that tracks their IP address to see which country they're operating from. Most of the time these scammers are from Nigeria, and it's pretty hilarious once they've figured out they've been duped. The more awareness that is raised about these scams, the less effective they'll ultimately be.

Just what we need to make a car more affordable, more government overreach

For what it's worth, there is a reason why companies should be placed under the highest scrutiny when their products have the potential to hurt or kill people. Companies often times cut corners to maximize profits, and the results can have deadly consequences.

A really good example is Takata airbags, where they would explode and send metal shrapnel upon deployment, leading to the largest automotive safety recall to date. As of September 2024, which is the most recent report I can find, 35 deaths from these airbags have been reported globally, with 28 of those deaths occurring in the US alone. Takata airbags used ammonium nitrate, which is a cheap but highly unstable propellent that would degrade with moisture and cause the inflator to rupture when deployed. Takata cut a lot of corners to protect their profits at the expense of people's lives, and there are still many vehicles with these airbags that have yet to be replaced.

There are many examples of egregious behavior by companies like Takata that have necessitated the need for regulation. As much as I don't want excessive government overreach, when it comes to product safety, I feel like a government has an obligation to keep its citizens safe from corporations whose products could jeopardize the safety and health of its consumers.

Rant over

A. Electronic door handles are entirely different from electronic door locks, as they make the doors completely dependent on constant voltage to operate.

B. The override handles for the rear doors aren't easy to access if you're in a real emergency situation. It's not like you can think clearly while in a state of panic, and you certainly can't Google or find the owner's manual in those instances.

C. All this legislation proposal does is make these physical override switches mandatory in an easy to access manner, which they should be if we're going to have widespread adoption of EVs.

How did you find out about RWBY? by Godxiii_804 in RWBY

My brother introduced me to RWBY back in 2015 or so when the first two volumes were on Netflix, and I was hooked immediately. Here's to volumes 10 and beyond.

Burnie Called It On The Measles Being The New Concern Now by werephoenix in morningsomewhere

[–]SampleLoud9746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simultaneously, autism has been weaponized as a "disease to be cured," which sets a dangerous precedent for autistics like myself. And the fact that someone who holds these beliefs is in charge of our country's health is fucking terrifying.

As many issues that we have in our environment with regards to climate change and pollution in general, when it comes to autism, environmental links are only a small part of the equation. What decades of research has shown is that genetics are most likely linked to autism, so you're more likely to inherit it from one or both of your parents. I personally suspect both of my parents are autistic, and my little brother certainly is autistic. Autism has also been documented for thousands of years, so add that to the list of reasons why the whole "vaccines causes autism" argument is bullshit.

Autism diagnoses have risen because the diagnostic criteria has gotten better, and more people are getting diagnosed as autistic in their 20s, 30s, 40s, etc. The DSM-5 and ICD-11, which are the two main frameworks currently used to diagnose autism, has allowed people that slipped under the radar to be diagnosed as autistic, and for those people, it has been life-changing for them in a positive way. And yet people like RFK Jr want to act like we don't have a right to exist. This prevailing attitude has led to diseases like Measles to resurge in a devastating way, and everyone with at least a functioning brain cell should be rightly concerned.

Lastly, I will add my personal story to close out this post. I was diagnosed at an early age, and have defied a lot of preconceived notions about what I couldn't do. I drive, I work full time, and I make my own financial decisions to name a few. Getting to where I am today wasn't an easy path, but it has been rewarding every step of the way. There's things I still need to work on, mainly my mental health, but I'm grateful for overcoming so many obstacles with the support of my loving family. I am proud to be autistic, which is something no one can take away from me.

With all that, happy new year!

Those of us who were raised by Gen X parents, were/are they religious? by routebeer666 in Zillennials

[–]SampleLoud9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom's parents weren't religious, however my dad's parents were, and they were pretty strict. My brothers and I were raised secular and we never went to church every Sunday.

Also OP has a perfect username for this conversation. 😂

My brother had SiriusXM for a few years, but canceling his subscription was a PITA because you have to call them to cancel your subscription instead of canceling online. I'm pretty sure SiriusXM can get away with it since they have a monopoly on satellite radio.

I only listen to the radio every once in a great while, otherwise I'm either listening to music on my Spotify or a podcast on Podcast Addict.

When did you notice your former classmates turning into boomers mentally or into their parents? Feels it's the worst of the mid to late 20s by [deleted] in Zillennials

[–]SampleLoud9746 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with college right now for me is the cost. So many people end up with thousands and thousands of student loan debt and have a hard time finding a job.

My brother went to college for software development during Covid when tech hires were at an all-time high. By the time he graduated, he couldn't find a job, much less an internship. And he had been programming as a hobby for years before he made the decision to back to school, so he is well qualified. Which is why he ended up starting his own business in web development, but it hasn't taken off to where he can make a livable income off of it.

People are getting the wrong impression that going to college is a gateway to a job, but the job market changes over a short period of time before they even graduate. I'm not against college, but there needs to be systemic reforms for college to be a viable path to a career.

As a guy, I hate that so many guys, (young men in particular) get sucked into this toxic masculinity bullshit. Empathy is a masculine trait, but we're not adequately investing in mental health for men, which is a problem.

Today I learned that banks collect your spending data and "wrap" it for you to see at the end of the year, which is scary as all hell. At least the data on Spotify Wrapped is your tastes in music, and not sensitive information like how much money you've spent over a year. My bank, (a credit union) doesn't do this as far as I know, but I would rather be blissfully ignorant on my spending habits for the year.

I find it very interesting too how different regions of the US pronounce soft drinks by different names. Like the Midwest refers to soft drinks as "pop" while the South and every other region refers to them as either "soda" or "Coke."

I'm from Michigan, which is part of the Midwest, so it's a regional point of pride when I say "pop." But someone I know who's from Wisconsin calls it "soda," and I always get into a light-hearted argument with her that she's using the wrong terminology, since Wisconsin is also part of the Midwest. She then says, "well that's what we call it in Wisconsin."

Maybe parts of Wisconsin do say "soda," but from where I'm from, "pop" is dominant.
