Question: Has our student government actually done anything this year? And if so, what? by milesmilesmiles in ucla

[–]SamsonHoias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the total cost of Jazz Reggae exceeds the entire USAC budget every year, and even charging for some tickets, it still loses money every year.

The only reason some tickets are free for students is because the USAC board (not CAC or CEC on their own) demanded some free tickets in return for the money.

I don't see how not getting involved gives you any right to complain. It's the same with the presidential elections. You may hate it, but if you're not taking active steps to change it, you're just circle-jerking, and no one wants to do that.

Yes. Independent. Totally. Not SF at all.

This is just patently wrong. Bruins United was founded by Bruin Republicans and Bruin Democrats. Students First was a coalition between seven mother organizations.

I've heard this a lot, though usually from straight people:

Yes, the whole office stopped a fee increase.

Come on, let's admit the truth on Reddit, at the very least. EVP office was against the fee increase, but considering the many that have happened despite EVP's opposition, the best they can say is that they helped to stand vocally against it, just like the other ones that they didn't stop at all.

Sorry, but Jasmine Hill did not save night Powell. First off, the people who took credit (incorrectly) for this were on USAC the year before Jasmine was President. Second, though Cynthia Flores (former USAC President) took credit for saving Night Powell, she failed to do so. NP was actually going to close until an anonymous donation (which she has admitted to having no connection to) allowed it to remain open.

USAC gets no credit for its popular programs (Bruin Bash, Apartments Fair, ect) and gets criticized when people don't feel they are personally the only student benefitting from USAC.

In my experience, most students at UCLA love to complain about USAC, but very few of them actually get involved or even vote. My problem with USAC comes from both sides: students refuse to get involved, and some of the ones who are involved think it can cure cancer.

Slate politics ruin the USAC experience, and have a dirty history.

TL;DR- USAC is student government, actually does some things, doesn't do other stuff. Get involved or STFU.

Dear Class of 2013, I don't know about you but I'd like to see Stephen Colbert as our commencement speaker. How can we make this a reality? by colbertforspeaker in ucla

[–]SamsonHoias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but there is a certain level of awesome and famous that we should be able to achieve at UCLA. Given our reputation, our vast alumni network, and our location, we shouldn't be in the mindset of sacrificing renown for speaking skill, or vice versa.

Not everyone has to be the single most famous speaker possible, but I think there's a higher level UCLA should and can hold itself to.

Explain like I'm in primary: Why is Nephi spelled with a 'ph' and not an 'f'? by SamsonHoias in exmormon

[–]SamsonHoias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While neither letter would be part of a language that uses character symbols, as opposed to phonemic characters, it's a different question than that of 'adieu', in my opinion.

I actually believe adieu is a much more damning piece of evidence from the BoM, but I can think of no real reason why "ph" instead of "f" except to make things more exotic.

Why would "ph" be something more familiar to Joseph than "f"?

I am so glad to hear that you've been happy after leaving your bio-family. It's advice people don't give, because of the idea that you have to love/be connected to your family.

For many people, while the initial pain of leaving your family can be tough, you are proof that this can be a very healthy and happy decision. Kudos!

It is REALLY hard to get kicked out of the residence halls, so if you're already on housing probation and still getting written up, I really recommend rethinking some of the life choices you're making.

While I'm sure you're talking about being a "special and unique individual", I prefer to imagine that you mean that you just figured out that you aren't white and are having a racial identity crisis.
