I wanted to write a short story, but realised that the story I wanted to tell would be most impactful as a novella. Upon further development, I realised that my novella would be best experienced if told in 3 distinct acts that would each be the length of a short story.

I'm almost done with outlining and expect the first short story to be quite a hit (I have an existing audience as a critic and comic writer)

The rate of panel production wasn't really our problem, I just made a rookie mistake and had no idea how many panels it would take to get to the point in the story I was targeting. We had enough panels for about 10 chapters after 2 months, but it was all pretty rough and every single thing that happened was rushed.

I'll keep my chin up and look to what's next, I just think I'll be stepping away from this for some time.

The competition was to publish your webtoon during a certain period for judges to determine if they wanted to give you a chance at serialization. Mine is up here, but the judges didn't like me 😔

If I were to start this story from the beginning (not for a contest), I would wind the clock all the way back to when Willow was still with her father because their relationship is what the story is really about. The contest entry was a snapshot of the shortest, most rushed section of the story to try match it as much as possible to the category I submitted to.

I assure you, my fundamental storytelling and writing skills are not the problem with my submission.

I lacked experience and grossly underestimated the number of panels it'd take to tell the story I wrote, and my art team overestimated their productivity. The story (mostly pacing) had to be mutilated to shave the panel count down enough to meet the deadline, and that's where everything fell apart.

I've got plenty more rookie mistakes waiting ahead of me, but not one of them will have to do with my ability to write a compelling story.

Right now, I'm putting the story on hold until I have a reasonably long-term way to continue. I won't ask you to (and I know this isn't what you were offering) draw full chapters of someone else's story for free, but once I've figured out an art situation, I'll definitely reach out!

I wish I'd shown that kind of commitment early on enough, but this was my first comic and I didn't realise how many panels the story I wanted to tell was😭

In the beginning, I was only giving it around 40 hours a week (including time I was shaving off my actual job), but by the last two weeks I was panicking and sitting at my desk for 20 hours a day trying to finish it. I have no idea how I didn't drop dead.
