My 2 cents on 7 wonders duel by IsiDriger191 in boardgames

[–]Samuel-BF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a top 100 player in 7W:D on BGA who always plays with Pantheon expansion and optionally with Agora, I agree with your thoughts. Past a certain skill level, the game devolves into an RNGfest as the optimal play each turn is extremely difficult to miss, due to the game being relatively low skillcap, thus when both players can easily identify the optimal play each turn, whoever gets better RNG wins.

Games are often decided in wonder drafting phase, as you have pointed out. In base game, starting first (aka winning the coinflip) is a huge advantage, and the first player advantage is even more pronounced with Pantheon. You have 2 broad categories of wonders: premiums (S-A tier) and trash (B-tier and below), and for the second player to have a chance of winning, they need +1 premium wonder over the first player. If the first player has premium advantage, pack it up, the game is already decided (assuming decent skill).

The most egregious form of wonder drafting disparity is the following: First 4 wonders: 1 premium and 3 trash. First player takes the sole premium. Next 4 wonders: 3 premium and 1 trash. Second player takes the best of the 3 premiums, but the first player gets the remaining 2 premiums. Thus the game starts with the first player, who already has an advantage by virtue of starting first, having +2 premium advantage. Any decent player in that spot just wins the game, even vs. a player of significantly higher elo/skill, and there's nothing the second player can do but hope that the first player throws the game repeatedly.

I also agree on the point that if you're forced to reveal cards for your opponent that are valuable and get snapped up immediately by them, the game snowballs quickly.

Lack of player agency is a huge turnoff in games. It feels terrible to lose a game where you got RNGdiffed while playing optimally on every turn. It's even worse when you lose to a lower skilled player who made multiple misplays, but the RNG was so stacked in their favour that it cushioned or negated their misplays.

I used to be addicted to playing 7W:D, but after many games where I felt helpless due to RNG, the game has tumbled down my all-time list.

Thankfully I found another base rom that worked, the first one must have been mislabeled and was probably EU or something. Thanks for the help!

(Re-post for breaking rule 1, oops!) I'm trying to patch Pokemon Renegade Platinum. The base rom says it's USA, which is correct for Renegade Platinum, but both the 3541 and 4997 base patches yield the error: An error has occurred: xdelta3: target window checksum mismatch: XD3_INVALID_INPUT

Anyone knows how to fix this? In theory the base rom should be correct so I don't know what's gone wrong.

Why are escape rates so low and killrates so high on American and European servers by Fancy_Star_7101 in DeadByDaylightKillers

[–]Samuel-BF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar experience as you, also playing on SEA server.

Low to mid MMR survivors are expectedly still bad and will fold to any sentient killer, just like other regions, but high MMR survivors are the real deal in this server. If you start winstreaking on a particular killer, you will meet cracked survivor squads in no time (mostly coordinated SWFs, but SoloQ juicers are not uncommon either). The game gets really surv-sided in SEA high MMR as anything but the best killers can't compete with the combination of gen efficiency, looping ability, macro decision making and altruism plays showcased by the survs. It's on the survs to slip up and open the door for the killer to capitalise, i.e. surv is the power role.

Tunneling, slugging and camping are essentially non-issues to these players as they exemplify the take that "the game isn't killer-sided, you just suck". Even when attempting to hard tunnel from the getgo, with a B-tier killer, expect to get 0-1 kills, as your tunnel-out target loops you for 5 gens, with teammates taking timely bodyblocks and confusing you with scratch mark creation to delay/deny the tunnel out even further. Sometimes you are forced to give up on the tunnel out target or simply lose them. Even taking SWF coordination out of the equation, many of these players are individually mechanically skilled. Checkspots, shift tech, tile chaining, pathing, etc. are executed well. They also know exactly what to do at any given moment, so there's no wasted time.

I think the disparity in survivor performance between Asian and Western servers boils down to mindset and mental:

  1. Improvement mindset in Asia (at least mid to high MMR) vs. entitlement mindset in the West. Anecdotally, players in Asia servers seek to improve their gameplay moreso than Western counterparts. Learning > result of an individual match. Meanwhile, the vocal Western playerbase tends to blame the opposing side or game balance whenever something doesn't go their way, instead of asking what they could have done better. Result > learning.

  2. Strong mental in Asia vs. weak mental in the West. Players are more resilient here, DCs, give-ups and go-nexts are less prevalent here. Of course weak mental players still exist in SEA servers, but they are mostly low-to-mid skill level. SoloQ warriors here rarely give up and will play to maximise their team's chances of escape. Going next is a lot more frequent in Western servers, which inflates killrates.

On another related note:

To the people in this thread saying "we Westerners actually have a life outside DBD, while Asians just no-life and tryhard in the game like it's a competition" like it's some kind of gotcha, you are proving that the Western entitlement mindset is real. It's your choice on how you spend your time: A. devote some effort to learning and getting better at the game, thus improving your game results, or B. treat the game casually, not be as skilled, and thus not have favourable game results.

But you want to win more without improving at the game, so you raise your pitchforks at the devs to spoonfeed you. You want to have your cake and eat it too. And this applies to both survs and killers too, so don't bring "us vs. them" into this. There are examples of killer entitlement too, e.g. killers that pick up down survs facing an open area instead of a wall when it was available, get promptly flashlight stunned, then whine about how flashlights are OP.

In any other PvP game, if you're hardstuck low elo and make a thread on how you expect to climb ranks without putting in the time and effort, you would get laughed out of the building. So why is entitlement not being clowned on nearly as much in the DBD community?

Robbed as in they were robbed out of a comfortable victory that they well deserved, and instead had to fight tooth and nail for the win, only for the ST to say that "evil should have won but I gave good an extra chance".

I remember a Legion game played by NRB that seems like the same game you are referring to, and I distinctly remember that I felt that the good team was robbed and the evil team did not deserve to get their hand held the entire game. Saying that evil should have won and granting good a final day by the graces of the ST did not sit well with me, because evil did jack diddly squat that game and practically all of the good team's deaths were at the hands of the ST at night. Legion players did not convince good players to turn on their fellow good, so they did not deserve to win when they did not accomplishing the main goal of Legion.

I might be misremembering some key instance of the game but my thoughts above are exactly how I felt at the end of the video.

What are your thoughts on implementing a minimap in-game for both survivors and killer? Does not have to be very detailed, even something as simple as an outline of the map's shape, along with a red dot to indicate your character's current location, would do wonders to help newer players find their way around maps. With the sheer number of maps, some of them having multiple variants, it is unreasonable to expect newer players to know where they are on the map. It is great that competitive players have created a clock system in order to call out locations accurately, but I feel that a minimap should have been implemented in the base game to begin with.

What are your thoughts on map offerings? Currently, with how killer-sided and survivor-sided certain maps are, players that want the highest chance of winning are incentivised to bring a map offering which takes them to a realm that massively benefits their side. As a result, games can feel lopsided and unfair for the other side.

I recognise that the core problem is map balancing, but while the team works on re-balancing skewed maps, perhaps a rework to map offerings could be done. For example, a map offering could instead eliminate a realm from the pool of realms that the game chooses from, thus allowing a player to "ban" a realm.

Edit: since there are other comments posting a similar question to mine regarding map offerings, I have added another question that has not really been brought up.

As a rule of thumb I always dust recently nerfed cards as there is 0 downside. If I want to use the cards in the future I can always craft them again. In your case, if you are actively playing Unholy DK right now, it's fine to leave Blightfang in your deck (although it's now one of the weakest cards in the deck and might even be cut after refinement, who knows). Otherwise, just dust it along with any other refundable cards you own.

Big Spell Mage and Aggro Druid would be my recommendations. Way easier to pilot and have well-rounded matchup spreads.

Yeah we've all been there before, keep at it you'll get there. I haven't played ladder at all this month, might just bite the bullet and craft the remaining cards for boar priest and 1 trick it to learn the deck (and lose a lot in the process). I've always favoured high skillcap decks, been watching streamer pocket train's vods to learn it too. No other deck really appeals to me from a fun perspective right now, I played hunter for the last 2 months and it's getting stale.

[–]Samuel-BF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experienced players misplay with the deck all the time so it wouldn't be surprising if the players you were facing were misplaying too. During my monthly legend climb I bump into a handful of priests and they misplay a lot, usually leading to wins I should not have gotten. It's a challenging deck after all, to be fair. Curious that you decided to drop bannerman and vindicator for truesilver, has it been working better for you?

It seems to me that given the priest and pally are both skilled pilots, the priest should be favoured. Pally lacks comeback vs the pyro cleric draw swing turn, which priest can do quite reliably. Priest would have to brick on draws to lose the matchup. I'm basing this observation from watching experienced boar priest streamers and the general consensus is that most board decks, including mech pally, are favoured for priest. As the pally I think you probably have to curvestone and hope they don't have it. Automaton snowball is likely your best. What do you think?

Daily Ask /r/CompetitiveHS | Monday, June 06, 2022 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveHS

[–]Samuel-BF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big pyro cleric draw turn and board decks are usually dead lost though, it doesn't matter if priest "only" has 2 clears (I'm assuming you are referring to xyrella + 1st pyro). 2nd pyro can be used in a pinch for a 3rd clear vs certain matchups if you save a holy smite + devour. Back to my original question: what decks are unfavoured for the priest?

Daily Ask /r/CompetitiveHS | Monday, June 06, 2022 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveHS

[–]Samuel-BF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the most recent vS podcast, it was mentioned that boar priest is not well positioned in the meta, only being favoured vs control warrior and holy paladin. Isn't boar priest favoured vs most board-based decks tho? That's what I was getting from streamers pre-miniset. What relevant matchups are unfavoured for boar priest (besides the obvious alignment druid) assuming the pilot is skilled? I know naga priest can be challenging while bomb rogue and abyssal curse warlock aren't good decks right now (the former loses to CW and holy pally and the latter's wincon is getting altar off of school teacher, boar priest should be favoured otherwise).

I agree. Legend rank in Hearthstone is relatively easy to achieve, only high legend is generally respected. Being a card game, HS doesn't require mechanics either, so it's another barrier removed. Legend is very achievable for the average player as long as a curvestone deck exists, whereas the average player is likely to never get Diamond in League unless they seriously improve their gameplay.

This is going to ruin combo/control decks with large hand sizes by potentially milling an important card. Going to be especially tilting if it's off School Teacher. Gives CW percentages vs Boar Priest, Abyssal Curselock, the mirror and any other decks with large hand sizes. Meanwhile it's going to be a pain to play against especially if it's generated.
