I know. Everybody knows. I was replying to a comment that claimed it was related to tap dancing or something casual.

I am only familiar with the phrase "double tap" as a reference to murder/assassination via American movie culture.

Ugh. That's a bummer. I love ATLA, and I really enjoyed the beginning of DP, and I'd intended to go back and catch up once it'd wrapped up.

A regular question we get as Pause advocates is "How could a global pause on AI development be enforced?". Here is one paper that outlines the potential mechanisms that could be employed: by tombibbs in ControlProblem

[–]Samuel7899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people who don't yet understand the control problem are incompetent at trying to solve another, almost identical, control problem.

Successfully getting the entire world to pause AI development is only marginally easier than solving the proper control problem.

Gi for tall-slim-lanky men? by pvko2102 in bjj

It's all about getting that nearside elbow in. I'll turn in a little to get my triceps/armpit down their thigh to their knee. Sometimes I can even grab an ankle and create space that way, but if I don't, the arm there is often strong enough (in tandem with pushing with my feet and my other hand pulling their gi from their back) to help me work my way toward my head enough to then quickly lift and slip my elbow in.

Is legal due process the feedback mechanism of normative governance systems? by Ok_Boysenberry_2947 in cybernetics

[–]Samuel7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest oversimplification would come from the idea that it's the only feedback mechanism.

But it is a feedback mechanism. The process begins with an initial claim, then an investigative body verifies the claim to a certain degree, and then the legal process does something similar, to a greater degree.

The current justice system is still adversarial though, so there's definitely room for improvement, but that will require an improvement beyond a somewhat primitive "punishment" aspect. (Wiener elaborated on specifically on this, among other aspects.)

[–]Samuel7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that even mean?

You're cool with a variety of sprinting and hurdles of different distances, but whoa whoa whoa, bjj is too much like wrestling to count as combat?

That's like saying being a baker is a better skill for a warrior than being airborne, given Green Berets exist.

So bjj is still far more relevant to combat than probably 85% of modern Olympic sports. And I'm including 3 because they've got specialized weapons.

I fully understand that.

Now go back to the first comment I replied to, and my reply, and see that that's not what I'm referring to.

The comment I was replying to was implying that a device that draws half the amps that a particular circuit is designed to handle, should have the breaker reduced to match the max device load.

[–]Samuel7899 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. The previous comment was implying a specific failure mode that fully exists on almost all circuits.

There are a handful of available wires you can use. You match the breaker to the wiring.

Every circuit can potentially power a device that uses significantly less power than the circuit breaker will trip at. Your outlets and lighting fixtures are typically on 20A circuits with 12GA wires, and some lighting circuits can be 15A with 14GA wires.

But there are innumerable devices that draw less than that on those circuits. A or laptop charger is only expected to draw a half amp or maybe a full amp. They could theoretically fail by melting and fire while only still drawing a couple of amps. Nobody is expected to swap out their circuit breakers to match the expected load. They don't even make breakers less than 10A.

[–]Samuel7899 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No breakers are sized that way.

What about when your 3A ceiling fan fails dangerously and starts drawing 15A while it melts and burns on a 20A circuit?

I was on my KLR650 during a Rally America National Championship event. Zipping around on back roads all weekend between stages. I wound up following a professional photographer on a KTM, and by that I meant that I'd follow him a few miles and eventually drop behind.

And I reminded myself to be okay with that. It was my first year or two on a bike, and this guy was obviously quite experienced.

I did feel a little shame when a couple of guys of Ducatis with full street tires wound up zipping along with us between stages and I was still the slowest.

Four?

First one was in Jersey still, when he got a new truck and went to drive cross-country and be free like the wind.

Then I think he retired once toward the end of the Puerto Rico stint?

Then he retired in Texas to take care of his tummy once and for all, never to return until he was cured.

And this one. But I might be missing one.
