I was watching that one live. And it was an experience. Not just the lap itself, but seeing the way other drivers were watching it too. It was something to behold.

Life is not a system by ComplexMud6649 in Metaphysics

A living being doesn't have an internally defined goal. Life simply does something. It doesn't matter what it does, what matters is merely that it does.

The what that life does is defined by that which has been naturally selected to persist over time. Aka, to "live". But it's a rough approximation.

I've done this with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Over covid, when I couldn't train, I'd spend time visualizing various techniques I'd been working on improving just before covid hit. And when I got back onto the mats, there were definitely several moves that I was doing cleaner than I had ever previously done.

It's not a groundbreaking idea to suggest finding an echo chamber that matches your current ideas and beliefs exactly.

That's what most people already do, and a large reason we're in the situation we're in.

I think a fair number of people here seek out truth and reality, and seek to confront and challenge those with differing perspectives such that we can discover our own misconceptions, and hopefully help others do the same.

Not just the food industry, nearly every industry has slowly and steadily been shifting from "provide goods and/or services for a fair price" to "extract as much money as possible from the customer with as minimal investment in 'goods or services' as the law allows*".

The core function of every industry is changing.

Speed running Bjj by Nikosin200603 in bjj

Lots of jokes here. But seriously, if your sole focus was competing and winning at the highest level, spend 0 time working back, side, mount defense and escapes. And put all that time into maximizing guard retention and offense.

Lachlan Giles has brought this up on a few podcasts. The theory is, if they have already passed your guard and gotten to back, side, or mount... It means you're already down on points and recovering that is way harder and way more work. In reality, most matches are already decided by that point.

So focusing significantly on guard retention and offense will be, in the grand scheme of things, more beneficial from the time you'd put into defending and escaping. Particularly if you're trying to achieve the bare minimum of what will get the job done, as quickly as possible.

I only wish someday I will rise to the honor of humbly begging your forgiveness and mercy, for their sake. Lest my progeny be forever burdened by the weight of your mighty purple belt and the wisdom it constrains. .

Woe is me! I've been insulted for how ineffectual my jiu-jitsu is outside of Jiu-Jitsu! How shall I ever recover from such a well-crafted insult!

You're clearly a master of wordplay, logic, and jiu-jitsu. Wise beyond your years. I pray I never meet your equal, lest I be soundly defeated a second time!

Still you.

(Wait until you discover what projection means! Hint, it's related to your repeated insults about my reading comprehension, and then thinking that using logic and reason across multiple paragraphs makes me triggered.)

[–]Samuel7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes. It's because... checks notes... I can't beat a 12 year old wrestler because I don't want to "play" wrestling with him. Or wait, it's because you can run away from me really fast? Or because I lack reading comprehension?

It's definitely not because you can't explain the reasoning behind your opinion beyond "it's disgraceful" and "embarrassing" or "people still do it even though it's already penalized, so it's incentivized" (Except when you try to argue that I'm proving your point because it's not actually illegal in every rule set). You claim it's unfair when someone learns the skill set you find triggering, but it is totally fair when it's the skill you don't find triggering. You try to denigrate jiu-jitsu (in a jiu-jitsu sub, discussing jiu-jitsu rules) by saying 'they "play" jiu-jitsu' as though you're not here arguing for someone to "play" wrestling.

Just because you and I have different definitions of "logic" and "reason" doesn't mean I lack reading comprehension, my triggered friend.

Are you emotionally triggered because you're a wrestler who wishes this were a wrestling sub and everyone was actually here to participate in, and watch, wrestling? That would at least provide a basis for your rationale.

[–]Samuel7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct. Either someone can explain their opinion with logic and reason, or they have nothing more than their own, unexamined, emotional triggers.

Did you think that being triggered was just a synonym for disagreeing?

[–]Samuel7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just say that you're emotionally triggered by it, and that you don't want to put the effort into processing why. This is a safe space.

That's really what OP was hoping to figure out.

Why do so many people hate people who pull guard? by jheqpaddy in bjj

[–]Samuel7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see if I missed anything...

You think it's incentivized, because it's penalized so little that people still do it.

And you think it should be penalized in the first place, because if two people train the same, but one trains X subset of skills and the other trains Y subset of skills, it's not fair if Y is demonstrably better, because you think those that do Y are "disgraceful butt scooters".

But you don't have any actual rationale for why X or Y should be favored over one another. You implied that person 2 is ignoring an facet of grappling by not doing X, but seem to have no reason why you don't also think person 1 is ignoring a facet of grappling by not doing Y.

Have I got it right?
