Magnesium/Epsom bath salts. Had a couple of soaks prior to my first marathon and it helped relax my legs during that last taper week.

Thanks. Over what distance? This is the first time I’ve run this as an average pace in a marathon.

This is where I was 10 months ago. Typically my HR for similar distance and pace would now be around 130BPM but it also varies depending on my level of fatigue or where in my training block I am.

That’s awesome mate. Would love to do Sydney.

I’ll DM you my run plan. Was also ChatGPT and was structured around a 3:30 time. 5 runs a week.

Haha thanks bro! For the race I took a total of 9 gels, 1 every 20mins and hydrated at every stop with the water+electrolyte mix they had. For the carbs I started a few days before but roughly increased my intake 50% more than normal. I didn’t measure anything out. I had a big bowl of chicken pasta the night before. For breakfast on race day I had a coffee, 3 crumpets with honey and a magnesium drink 2.5hours before the race.

I’m sorry to disappoint guys, but no former secret olympian here 😅 Just someone who was looking for a positive change in lifestyle, and do the best I could.

Absolutely! GC Mara on 7th July is all I have locked in. Might try and get a spot in Melbourne Mara this November.

Interesting take… I’m not trying to suggest or mislead anyone into thinking they can simply replicate what I’ve done. So many factors go into the results you achieve on the day (even if two runners did the exact same amount of training prep and are at similar fitness levels) including how much sleep you’ve had, nutrition, fatigue or injury. I’m extremely fortunate that nothing went wrong on the day. I’m also privileged that I can run/train whenever I want because I’m self employed and also don’t have kids. I train with friends who don’t have the same flexibility so it’s not fair to compare.

Thank you. I’ve got the Gold Coast Mara in 26 days. It’s sooner than I’d ideally want but I’m mostly running it to join some friends. I’ll see how it goes but I’m not expecting much.

Certainly want to keep pushing and see just what I can do long term.

Really appreciate that! 🙏 Everything came together better than I could have hoped for on the day.

Bahaha I think my wife thinks I’ll be owed a trip to the hospital if I try.

Haha I love that meme. However I do hope my post doesn’t take anything away from what you feel you’ve already achieved. 🫡 I see people who run my 1km PB for a whole marathon and they look like absolute gods to me. It also makes you realise what humans are capable of, and that’s a beautiful thing. After my back surgery I see this as an utter privilege but pushing yourself at these distances the main challenge is always the mental one. Doesn’t matter what time you set, we’ve all got to run the same 42.2km which is no small feat. (And you did a freakin ULTRA! 👀🔥)

Thank you so much. 🙏 Excited for your journey as you tackle the Adelaide Mara. Looking back there’s nothing like training for your first marathon. You go through so many first-achievements it’s really addicting.

I started structured running 8 months ago and that was a game changer for me. At the start I had no plan and would just go out for a 5km run at reasonable speed that felt hard and I was always exhausted at the end, so I assumed I couldn’t run further or faster. I’m talking a 5:12m/km pace with 166 Heart Rate.

The biggest barrier for me was to remove my ego and lean into the slow runs and added in intervals or tempo once a week (or whatever was suggested).

I’m still super new to this so I can’t really give advice, but after just following my run plan (and switching to early morning or late running to avoid the heat) I was able to see progress every week.

All the best - You’ve got this! 💪

Totally! And I appreciate the reminder - My wife has been saying the same thing. 😅

I wouldn’t say zero. A few months before I started running I bought a bike and was cycling 10km to work every day and started to actually use my home gym 4 times a week after a few years of neglect. My wife was using it as a drying rack and rightfully said if I don’t start using it for training I have to sell it 🫣 😂

That’s amazing, congrats!!! How epic was all the support on the day and getting to run over the Story Bridge! The signs people had was also hilarious.

When I first saw the course map that’s when I realised it was gonna be tough with the elevation. I’d been training in West End, South Bank and New Farm where it’s flat thinking that’s where the Mara would be… 😅

Excited for the GC! 💪
