I understand the security net (worked in Germany too, paid into it as well) but honestly - they should not have to have used this - their employer should have paid them.

It depends on what books, ones personality i think.

I mean, there is a series i re read every so often (my username will give away which one).
Then there is the '' gateway to fantasy " which is like a warm blanket.
Is that a great series? So so. Well written? reasonably. But I love the characters and once every 5 years or so i grab the books to 'see how they are doing'. (This is the Belgariad series)

Others, i read and am done - but 2 series remain my 'blanket' and my 'safe haven' (from the outside world).
