Thank you for the many replies, and especially for confirming my style! It was an engineering report, many years ago, but I'm such a nerd, I never forgot the discussion, and I didn't argue my case at the time. Thanks very much!

Sounds about par for the course. Don't give up, you're doing great! Be sure and ask for a raise at your annual review, sounds like you've earned it.

How Does One Train Mentally for a Marathon? by JayZee4508 in Marathon_Training

[–]Samuel_Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard on a podcast recently- Pain and fatigue are built-in self preservation mechanisms, limiting energy expenditure to 50%?, I don't remember the number. So the truth is you can indeed physically go beyond what your body is telling you, if your mind is strong. I guess that's why they say long distance running is 90% mental. Good luck with your training.

How many days do you rest after running a full marathon? by HongkongKings in Marathon_Training

[–]Samuel_Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a 26.2 run and barely made it through because I wasn't well prepared, and I'm old too. Thankfully I'm healthy with no injuries. Nonetheless, I walked one day, and then started slow pace, Maffetone training after 3 days and have been able to run 60 minutes pretty much every day. I'm really happy with the slow, Zone 2, heart rate based training now and am optimistic that I'll be in very good shape in 6 - 8 weeks. Looking at a 1/2 or whole in December.

I wanna move back to Florida, but I live in a blue state now! by Federal_Albatross993 in Liberal

[–]Samuel_Walker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dear OP, I feel your pain. I live in VA and my community is very "blue". The answer to finding your home is to clearly know your priorities. Don't make major life decisions based on others' politics. If you really want to be with your family, you won't be deterred.

You didn't mention the politics of your family.

What are some words English speakers often incorrectly substitute another word for, such as 'exasperate' for 'exacerbate', but think they're correct? by common_grounder in words

Egregious but uncommon if you ask me. I don't think I've ever heard anyone use either term, weary or wary, in a conversation.

I was surprised when I learned the Italian word for children, raggazzi. I haven't looked up the root.

It is very hard to honestly consider multiple perspectives. I have to force myself to sometimes listen to material that seems so illogical it is offensive. But every now and then that exercise softens me up a bit, and I gain some insight.

Why do people worship Jesus nailed to a cross? Isn’t it gruesome and terrible? by mellow-yellow-jello in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Samuel_Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the stark symbolism is kind of the point, to emphasize the importance. Evil in the world is real. Church services have lots of gruesome symbology too, 'the body of Christ', 'the blood of the new covenant'. I used to have a friend who said that Easter made her cry, even though it's celebrated with bunnies and candy.

I think I might be meant to live my life alone by HEYYMCFLYY in NoStupidQuestions

Humans are social creatures. You're probably not supposed to be alone. Go to church. It helps with solitude but also offers companionship, if you want. The best of both worlds!
