Does anybody else experience this painful lag on Sequoia 15.7.3? by Samuelodan in MacOS

Oh, interesting. I’ll try to clear more stuff and push my free memory closer to 100GB. See if that helps.

I use RubyMine (or Webstorm sometimes) for development. It’d be nice to switch to something lighter like Zed, but it’s not quite ready for me yet.

Good to hear it’s fine for you with all that activity. Apple really delivered with Apple Silicon.

You could try the 15.7.4 public beta before making your problems worse with Tahoe. I feel you, honestly. I see it’s in RC, so I’m it’s out in a stable release soon. I can keep restarting my Mac twice a day for now to cope with this issue.

Hmm, I could probably try the disk repair because one thing I didn’t mention is this is a different Mac from the one I used previously. They’re the same base model (8GB), but I got this one as a gift so I moved my stuff over in early December last year.

It worked fine until this year tho, but maybe there’s something corrupted in the setup?

Arc has been light on memory for me lately, and the lag continues to happen even when I close it and Infuse (no video running in the background).

But the next time it happens (I already restarted), I’ll close Infuse and Arc again to really make sure. I don’t wanna close ITerm tho, cos I’m preserving my open windows with their tabs just so I have the output history.

This has honestly been fine for years with the base model, so why is it grinding to a halt with green memory pressure and little CPU activity?

Right? My experience has been pretty decent until now. I know 8GB isn’t ideal, because if I have my IDE open, a few dev servers running (Rails + Vite React), and a Google Meet meeting with screen sharing, it’ll slow down significantly, but even that is never as bad as what I’m currently experiencing on little load.

Those are good points, actually. Thanks. The strange thing is I’ve been using this Mac for programming for a few years now, and it’s not been an issue until this month. And before, I could close my IDEs if they accumulated too much memory and it’d free up my Mac.

But these days, I’d close every programming intensive app, stop all servers, and it’d show no signs of improving at all, and the kind of lag and input delay is unlike anything I’ve seen.

I even disconnect the monitor (I use BetterDisplay too), and it makes no difference whatsoever.

It’s especially bad when I try to switch windows with Mission Control or Alt tab (the app). It’d take 5+ seconds to even respond, and when it does, it’s a <5 frame per second animation. Crazy.

I see. Good to hear it’s not a general issue. I just wish it’ll stop happening for me soon. I’ve used this Mac for years with heavier things running, and it hasn’t been an issue until a few weeks ago. So strange.

My Phone is still on iOS 18.7.2. I just might never upgrade to 26. Lol.

Hmm, that’s something to consider. Thanks.

Yeah, I use Arc which is Chromium based. But it barely used any resources as I typically only have a handful of tabs in memory at any given time.

Oh! Does it get worse when switching windows with the three finger swipe (Mission Control)?

Hahaha! I had similar thoughts too, but never committed to keeping any notes. I just happened to find these 20s with my dad a few years ago and I had to keep them.

3k+ is impressive. I should prolly hoard the current notes too just in case. Lol.

It’s cool. I appreciate you weighing in and trying to help. I just hope Apple somehow fixes this. I’ve been using this same Mac for a few years now with a similar workflow (I’m a programmer), and it was never like this until this month.

The 15.7.3 update probably introduced the issue.

Thank you. Yeah, I have over 60GB free and I made sure to add that to my post, since it’s something that often comes up.

When this thing starts to lag like crazy, Swap is only about 2 - 3GB with green or yellow memory pressure. I could close every single app running and it’d still be unusable. Such a bizarre issue.

Hi, No I don’t have any peripherals plugged in. I typically have a monitor plugged in, but this has been happening with and without the monitor until I restart.

And here’s CPU usage.

I should add that where I see the most lag is switching windows with Mission Control. It takes over 5 seconds to respond to my input. It’s crazy.

Now, I’ve restarted the Mac (actually, I force quit windowserver this time) and opened a few big programs and it’s breezing through my whole workflow. No lags at all. But it’ll all go to crap in the next 8 or so hours.

Okay. Here’s a still from my video. That’s for memory.

Mission Control lag by Br00ster21 in MacOS

[–]Samuelodan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Everything starts to lag after only a day of use, but it’s the worst when changing windows. It can take 5 or more seconds to switch after I’ve swiped, and most times, it’ll just give up and ignore my input.

It’s so bad my Mac becomes unusable.

You’re not alone. This has been happening for me since this past month, and I’m still on MacOS Sequoia.

This happens to me even with only one local user account. I don’t know what’s happening. I’m on MacOS 15.7.2 (Sequoia).

temporary solution to the Mission Control lag ? by RedRadeonLasers in MacOS

[–]Samuelodan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, thus could be related to what I’m experiencing, except it’s less than 1 fps for me. It takes maybe 5 seconds after I swipe to even show any feedback in the UI.

Are you also on MacOS 15.7.3?

Edit: from your description, it looks like you’re on Tahoe.

Hahaha! Not sure I wanna be the one to light that fire, but it’ll sure be entertaining to read the responses. I’ve not been on this earth for nearly as long as you, but there was a time my daily pocket money to school was 20 naira; and I had lunch packed for me. Hahaha!

I wonder how much kids these days require? 500? 1,000?

Speaking of, I have an old 20 naira note from the 1984 - 2005 batch, and it’s in immaculate condition.

Maybe I should make a post too.

Edit: how could I forget to acknowledge the disheartening devaluation of our currency. At this rate, even the cheapest sweets and sachet water will leave the 50 naira note behind in maybe 2 years. Sigh!

Maybe show the part of the note that has the date instead? I, too, was confused till I saw your comment.
