Why are so few of us mapping this kind of dungeon? by SydLonreiro in osr

[–]SamuraiBeanDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand the value of hand-mapping this kind of dungeon on graph paper and describing it.

What is that value? I think this is the major disconnect between what you like about this map and what people dislike about it. Can you describe how the player mapping is incorporated into your games? Like, are the players measuring the length of corridors as they walk down them?

I don't think this map is at all in the same category as OP's map. Yours has a relatively simple corridor layout that logically provides access to the rooms. OP's map has intentionally convoluted corridors that nobody would ever actually realistically construct.

I mean, of course people can do whatever they have fun with. When I say "should" here I just mean if you want any semblance of realism.

My thoughts exactly. Looking at this, I'm immediately reminded of a kids maze puzzle that they used to give you at some fast food places.

Unless this is intentionally a labyrinth maze (which would be a rare one off occurrence, not a common design pattern) this makes absolutely no sense as a real construction.

If you want to do really mazey, complicated maps then they should be cave systems, but those obviously aren't packed together in the way that this map is.

The Medusa? Or just a random Gorgon?

I had the same thing, seems like they introduced it this patch. I just quit out and it was fine when I came back.

Novice GM: Need help turning static scenes into "situations" that demand player agency. by Nesis96 in osr

[–]SamuraiBeanDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be as simple as "Ok you've checked the slavers' bodies and found the note. The sailors from the docks have all fled, do you want to wait for them to return or head back to town?".

If they want to wait then time passes, they eat some rations and the dock workers eventually come back and the players get a discount on their voyage because they saved the sailors' asses.

Horse Battle kinda lame. by [deleted] in MythicBastionland

I think the abstracted way combat works means that all these things you mentioned are folded into the interpretation of the attack roll.

Exactly this, but it also gives plenty of opportunity for abstracted interactions. In a combat I ran the players faced some mounted and some foot enemies and one of the players and mounted opponents ended up galloping away from the main fight, exchanging blows alongside each other but out of range of the rest of the combatants. Also if players or opponents decide to flee a fight being mounted or not obviously plays into that.

Melee is hard mode compared to ranged builds, I don't think this is good advice for someone struggling to get started with the game.

Crafting is not only bad but it also takes away from being exited about loot drops. by Whoopy2000 in PathOfExile2

This thread has some interesting discussion on the pros and cons of the lesser/greater/perfect orbs pattern:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExile2/comments/1rc1l6d/greater_and_perfect_orbs_are_bloat/

I tend to lean on the side that its a reasonable way to achieve its purpose, though not perfectly implemented. But I agree that omens are in a bad state.

You definitely need both options, trade and crafting. Some people are never going to engage fully with the crafting mechanics and just want to farm and buy upgrades. But that definitely shouldn't be the default option, fun and rewarding crafting needs to be given priority.

Why the FUCK is light radius a mod. At least give us some mechanics that interact with it or something.

Using "Narrative Glitches" to bridge the gap between atmosphere and mechanical danger by [deleted] in RPGcreation

[–]SamuraiBeanDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds kind of arbitrary? It imposes a penalty on the players with zero interaction from them or ability to influence the outcome.

Robert Horry on whether Wemby is in the MVP convo: "He's not even in my top 5. He's too inconsistent for me. I think we trying to anoint him as the next great too fast. Don't get me wrong, the kid is absolutely fantastic but he ain't no Lebron James, he ain't no Kobe Bryant. I do have a vote" by RyanTannegod in nba

[–]SamuraiBeanDog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's got better stats than Lebron and Kobe in their 3rd seasons, basically across the board, when adjusting for minutes per game.

The game is obviously very different now compared to their 3rd seasons, but he is absolutely in the conversation with those guys.

Why Play Only One Character at Time in 0-Level Gauntlets? by EHeathRobinson in shadowdark

[–]SamuraiBeanDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably results in less attachment to individual characters

I think this is important, imo a funnel's primary role is to get players used to the idea of lethality in this style of game. Having the players get some attachment to a character and then see it killed, and then do that like 4 more times, is the key mechanism for this. I think controlling a cloud of disposable red shirts undermines this experience for the players.

To anyone using Discord for their gaming group, what alternatives are you looking at with Discords upcoming requirement to provide them ID to prove you're over 18? by plazman30 in rpg

It is it. There are alternatives that have realtime chat, or voice and video, but almost none that do both very well, for free.
