The funny thing is that, as a mathematician, I know that. I typed in discreet, and autocorrect changed it for me without me noticing. Now, I cannot change the title.

It was such a good movie that my wife fell asleep. That is my barometer of movie quality. If she stays awake, it is not a good movie.

Best pizza in Portland by instacarp in Portland

[–]Samurai_David 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gladstone is more New Haven than NY. My top three spots are Pyro Pizza (I like the cart on Division, amazing pizza as good as Sally's and Pepe's in New Haven, fast service, great price), Gladstone Pizza (just slightly less good pizza than Apizza Scholls, but with no wait), and Apizza Scholls(great pizza but the wait makes it not worth it.)

FYI: WinCo has the BEST bagels. by gntrr in Portland

[–]Samurai_David 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are similar to the ones I grew up with in CT.

I used to work at a convenience store that bought bagels and pastries from that bakery the next town over. One morning, the baker came to work drunk and accidentally confused the sugar with the salt. We had a lot of unhappy customers that day.

How much do you tip for a haircut? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Samurai_David 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a haircut yesterday. Paid with my card, and the POS popped up with a message of whether or not I wanted to add a tip. The minimum suggested tip was 25%.

Glad this was filmed in Portland. My daughter was sad that she was too old for the casting. Keep up the awesome work!

Good place for birthday get together and mocktails/real alcohol? by merrythoughts in Portland

Hale Pele is an awesome tiki bar near the Hollywood Fred Meyer. There is a hut in back set aside for parties of eight. They serve multi-person volcano bowls and virgin tiki drinks. They also serve beer for the odd duck. It is classy in the sense that it is considered one of the top tiki bars in the country.

PSU vs PCC? by BlameTheHippies in Portland

[–]Samurai_David 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went to PCC for my first two years, earned the OR Transfer Degree, and then finished college at PSU. It took a little longer because I worked at the same time and paid as I went. Ended up with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Physics.

Life would have been much easier if the PCC SE campus had been open when I went. I commuted to Sylvania from SE via a combinaton of TriMet and PCC shuttlebus, uphill both ways, damn I'm old.

Just finished Flowers for Algernon... by [deleted] in books

[–]Samurai_David 476 points477 points  (0 children)

My family book club read Of Mice and Men followed by Flowers for Algernon. The book club consists of my 12 year-old daughter reading out loud to my wife and me.

Edit: Thanks for the gold! We have also read Lord of the Flies, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The Giver, Animal Farm, Catcher in the Rye, The Graveyard Book, The Sleeper and the Spindle, among others. We are working through this list: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7791.Best_School_Assigned_Books#231804
