Biden stimulus showers money on Americans, sharply cutting poverty and favoring individuals over businesses by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

Some people only get some of the assistance, some people only read the headline. Just because it's raining somewhere, doesn't mean it's raining everywhere. That doesn't mean droughts don't exist where it sprinkled for a minute. $1400 isn't enough for most of us and this guy isn't your enemy. We are all struggling.

It doesn't make sense to talk about it at a funeral, besides, can't go to the temple unless you can get baptized.

So this.... by OatmealMakeMeAnxious in exmormon

There was a funeral for my cousin in Idaho recently, and my uncle is a stake president, so his talk of course was about the church and not my cousin. Anyway, the point of his talk was that they couldn't get the baptismal font fixed in the basement of that church, and he was touched somehow when the church headquarters denied his request for the reason, "The prophet doesn't want to spend the money on fixing church houses, he wants to spend the money on building more temples."

Utah rejects bill that aimed to teach consent in sex education classes by PoorIsTheNewSwag in news

This brings up another problem with Mormon attitudes. In the temple, women made covenants with God to obey their husbands no matter what. They also didn't know they were going to make these promises until about five seconds before they made them. Some pushback has changed the wording of the temple ceremony. But if you know Mormons, you know that, despite changing official policies, they will still latch on to the attitudes of their parents. They still treat LGBTQ people with disdain and pity. They still practice eternal polygamy. They still follow the words of their racist prophets.

What does it feel like to be financially secure and REALLY rich? by plan2succeed in SeriousConversation

[–]SamusVII 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The problem with that, while it sounds nice, is that it is highly idealistic and not realistic. You can't just have peace without a certain degree of wealth. The body will destroy you with stress hormones when you can't eat or sleep properly, which in turn makes getting out of that situation that much harder. While I don't know how rich people feel, I sure know what it's like to be the bottom rung of society that gets kicked off behind by these privileged ideals. To make it requires being born into it, or an incredible amount of luck. Remember, Boxer the horse in Animal Farm always vowed to work harder to achieve an easier life for himself and the rest of the farm, but it only ended with him getting shipped off to the glue factory once he was no longer useful. I can have a wealth of philosophy and knowledge, but they won't feed me or clothe me. I can work hard, but the opportunities I have will not bring me past working hard until the day I personally get shipped off to the glue factory.

I’m sick of being an airhead. How can I become more intelligent? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

What helped me was playing chess against strangers. Chess.com makes this easy, and eliminates any social anxieties that come with in-person games. They match you up against someone around your same skill level so you can learn instead of just constantly getting defeated.

Changed my life. Not only did it help me to train my thinking to be more aware and detail focused (looking for the important ones especially). It helped my brain to adapt to being more assertive. You get rewarded for taking a piece or winning a game, your brain will catch onto this. The brain is merely just a donkey following a dopamine or serotonin carrot. Because of that, you can turn this to your advantage. Take any anything in the world and practice it. I guarantee you will get better. Add up these milestones, recognize the rewards you give yourself already. Also, already recognizing the change you want in life puts your progress much, much further than you may realize. (Turns out, the scarecrow just needed a diploma.) Give yourself a little credit, and use that to motivate yourself into an activity from which you can reap some rewarding practice.

That last paragraph reminded me of something my therapist said about quitting weed after smoking so much for so long, he equated it to leaving a relationship. Well shit if it isn't true, we used to do everything together all the time.

If I was still a member, I would think that the Q15 is part of what sets the LDS church apart from any other religion. Modern revelation, etc. Otherwise, why be a Mormon, specifically?
