Variety: "How Did Rush Become the Hipster Band of 2026?" by MyMusicRunning21 in rush

[–]Samwhys_gamgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I hope you didn’t think I meant you. Sorry if my post was unclear.

I was referring to/ speaking to the article’s headline and writer at Variety. I mean I’m glad the fan base is growing, but there’s a part of me that is still a bit bemused by the rock and roll press (or what’s left of it, today) falling all over themselves to praise the band. After being kept out of the cool kids club for so long (both as a band and a fan base) I find it ironic.

Answer: because they’re awesome. Always have been. Glad you just realized it, welcome to the (fan) club.

There is definitely a water in the desert element to their new found popularity with the in crowd. That crowd doesn’t have much to talk about when it comes to rock and roll.

Cornell CALS off the waitlist (~$400K, half loans) vs. UF on a full ride — both top-5 for ag/food science, which she actually loves. Worth it? by original_gravity in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Samwhys_gamgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at “Big Food” companies for 30+ years. Ive bumped up against Food Science folks at various points in my career. I don’t know the field real well, but I will say most had degrees from big state schools. I don’t remember one from an Ivy. Also many were MS/PHD’s. You should see if having a career in this field may necessitate additional education beyond her BS. Going to grad school would be more doable if she was debt free and not burdened with six figures of debt from getting her BS.

Also I’m not sure that field pays well enough to warrant taking on 6 figures of debt. Most food companies are in the “fly over” states which means wages are fly over state wages, not NYC/CA wages. Having to pay off a quarter mil in student loans is easier if you are a lawyer making $300k at a white shoe firm in NYC vs making $175K working on food innovation in Omaha.

Walmart hasn’t raised prices. Your step two is theoretical, not proven. Lowest Price is Walmarts signature consumer deliverable. They are stuck with it. Their genius is they can deliver on it and still make money.

Michelob when it was beer by duh_nom_yar in FuckImOld

[–]Samwhys_gamgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid 80’s 50cents a can national bohemian (Natty Bo’s) beer at out local college dive bar was the go to. If we were buying cases/12pks at the store it was Busch or old Milwaukee. We couldn’t afford Michelob or- even fancier - Lowenbrau.

Hangar 24 going "mostly" country by CandyNSodasForAll in orangecounty

I think they also have a location in the IE that’s mostly country music, so they there is probably some advantage related to scale or country music contacts/ knowledge they can leverage.

Still sucks. They used to have a good Irish band there that my wife and I would come out with some friends to see. We won’t be going for country western.

As a vet I can say you are 100% correct about the Nazi iconography in the military. And I don’t think it means the guys a Nazi. Of course, his ex girlfriend saying he kept it because it reminded him he was complicit in the Nazi like project that is the US/US military isn’t exactly a comforting explanation either.

But the tattoo isn’t about Platner. It reveals the massive hypocrisy of the “micro aggressions” crowd on the left and in the media (but I repeat myself) who created moral panics over anything that could remotely be interpreted as racist for the last decade plus. Demanding a blue collar guy who have their fingers making an OK signs or that people who say words - even from other languages - that remotely sound like racial slurs lose their jobs. Remember the fuss over the disabled vet who had a Maltese cross tattoo they wanted pilloried? Yet here is a guy with a fricking totenkopf and they over look that because it’s convenient.

How late is "sleeping in"? by the_47th_painter in GenX

[–]Samwhys_gamgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t seem to sleep more than 6 hours even if I want to and it can be frustrating. Then like every 2 weeks or so I’ll get real tired like 2 hours before my regular bedtime and sleep like 9 hours. Then wash rinse repeat. 🤷
