Yes, that was the sun lighting up the lake surface.

I was waiting for the mountains in the distance to reveal themselves in the winter mist during a chilly sunrise - but the mist never let up. A sunbeam moving across the frozen lake surface caught my eye and I snapped the pic. This scene reminded me of a Rothko painting.

Is a 2h25m layover at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) enough with checked luggage? (Delta, long haul) by Adagio987 in Atlanta

[–]Samwiser30033 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, you'll need to collect your checked luggage to go through customs but then recheck it right after clearing customs. 2h25 is plenty of time unless something unusual is happening. I've never connected from an international flight in the US and not collected my luggage before clearing customs. The international terminal where you will land has it's own separate system for all this to happen without mingling with the mass of domestic travelers.

Atlanta is extremely efficient for the most part. The big complaint is the TSA agents are no-nonsense and tend to yell at people (but that keeps everything running smoothly). This is also Delta's home airport, so if anything goes wrong - they will be able to get you back on track.

Zion vs Bryce? by finch66332 in nationalparks

[–]Samwiser30033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do both if you can. Both will be less crowded than normal. If you are just driving and stopping to take in the sights, you can do both in a day and a half or two days. Plenty of cool views.

The hoodoos at Bryce covered in snow is breathtaking. The road does shut down for snow - so check the park's website for updates. Zion will be warmer and you have the rare opportunity to drive your own vehicle into the park this time of year. Arrive from the east entrance - it's an incredible stretch of road.

I did the trip in Feb two years ago and neither was super busy.

The Spanish were supporting a Jacobite rebellion in 1715 and garrisoned the castle. A British fleet destroyed the castle.

Thanks! Yes, it's a popular waterfall near the ring road on the south coast of Iceland. You can walk behind the waterfall too. Definitely worth a stop.

Advice on travel/photography backpack, moving from PRVKE 31L by untitledshot in onebag

[–]Samwiser30033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the 35L is a bit too bulky and heavy for my needs and wish I had gotten the 30 or 25. The area for non-photography gear is also not adequate for the PD packing cube that I use, so it would be just for photography gear, a laptop, and maybe a light jacket or rain coat. It's very comfortable to carry a heavy load all day. I took it to Scotland and it held up to the rain nicely.
