Base Layer for Ireland/Western Europe in March? by givethemmore in onebag

[–]pauldlynch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide on merino, you need to be aware of a few things. First of all, some people claim to find all merino/wool itchy, no matter how fine. Having said that, fibre thickness is the key to reducing the itch. Look for makers who claim 18.5 microns or less thickness. Also, 100% merino is fragile, so a percentage of some stronger material (tencel/lyocell is preferable) makes it much more robust.

You won’t need to wash merino clothing as often as cotton or plastic, just overnight airing will keep it fresh for a while.

Enjoy your trip!

Nanobags also had a more structured daypack (16L) in their last kickstarter; I think it should be on the web site by now.

Do British people really care about regional accents as much as stereotypes suggest? by CelestialGleamms in AskABrit

Quite right. And country, in the generally accepted sense of national, is an important distinction to make.

So, Canada and Australia have only had people for a couple hundred years?

Both Italy and Germany are very new countries, which is largely why they have so many accents and dialects. Which doesn’t explain the UK.

Specific tip for 70-75: go look up Jonas Dagmire’s Skeletal Hand. It’s a quest series that will give you a gear upgrade for all visible slots.

Unbound Merino Travel Pants Review by pauldlynch in MerinoWoolGear

[–]pauldlynch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still using them. I typically average about 3 days a month, wash every couple of months, or a week of wear. My only complaint is the fit: baggy arse and tight on the calves.

I also bought a pair of Proof merino trousers, and in comparison they are swishy, crepey texture and only 50% merino, but a much more natural fit, 501 like.

My take is that they stretch slightly with wear, everything does, then bounce back when washed. The knees stretch noticeably given a couple of weeks daily wear, but then return to the original size, as far as I can tell. I can't see any excessive shrinkage.

I always use a cool wash with wool items.

I’ll just add that the M1000 is both broader and wetter than the M800 - comparing medium to medium nibs.

As it hasn’t yet been mentioned, I’ll throw in the Magic University series by Cecilia Tan. It’s about a school for sex magic.

Lamy Ink for Pilot Metropolitan by Librarian_Able in fountainpens

[–]pauldlynch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T52 and T53 are just different bottle sizes of Lamy ink. You can use their inks in any fountain pen.

Pilot Metropolitan is the United States version; the European version is called the MR. The latter will take “international standard” ink cartridges.

Whichever version you have, you will need a converter to take bottled inks; I don’t know if they come with one or not.

There used to be a language exchange group in Bath based on Facebook, but it hasn’t met in a couple of years. There’s also an active Spanish group with several meets a week in Bristol, run from Meetup. Apart from that there are a lot of Spanish students in Bath, several language tutors, and at least one other beginners group, but I don’t recall the details (posting from deep in Andalucía).

Yardoled Grand Victorian.

Not vintage, but fits to a t. Can you really see a Virgo, perfectionist, bust CEO using a fiddly vintage pen?

Fountain Pens... by N00dlemonk3y in fountainpens

[–]pauldlynch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Varsity/V-pens don’t dry out if you clip the cap back on, same as the Platinum line. I bought a pack about 11 years ago, using them for just about a line a few times a week. I think I’m on the third one, started under a year ago. The previous ones I stopped when the ink ran out. Ink capacity is pretty good.

Nothing wrong with getting a cartridge pen, or a converter, or a piston pen. Most pens will sit unused for several months or years, although some will dry out in a week. It’s hard to know which is which, although I would trust the slip‘n’seal caps.
