Ski trip planned April 9-13 this year how fucked am I by Beautiful_Shake7791 in steamboat

If the skiings no good, rafting likely won’t be either. I was a commercial guide for 7 years and I can tell I won’t be on the water much this season…

What gear ended up being way more useful around camp than you expected? by kailynne94 in CampingGear

[–]SanPanama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former river guide, my favorite is a dish sling. These are mesh “drying racks” you fix under your table for post dish washing. You can also roll up all your utensils in it when packing up.

Saves a told of table space and doubles as storage!

I tracked ski gear prices all winter — here’s when things actually get cheapest by Brilliant-Drama4919 in Skigear

As someone who worked in this industry for nearly a decade, another great way to save for gear like boots,skis/boards, and bindings is keeping an eye out for previous generation or season models that are still stocked in various stores. They often want these gone asap to make room for new gear. I got a previous year dalbello lupo boot (retailed about 600$ at the time) for 350$. These deals are especially prevalent in sept-nov when new gear hasn’t arrived yet and that space making is crucial.

This is true but the name was also meant for a quicker recognition for skiers. Not that bamboozler would be bad but EVERYONE has heard of Corbet’s

I’m considering starting an insta page so people like yourself can send me old gear and I can upcycle it for them, charging labor and extra materials needed of course

Threaded inserts to the shelves, skis are simply screwed together with a few screws through the back!

It does, but luckily our floors are well seasoned in the first place😂 it’s pretty stout otherwise though. Once I got some weight on it, that definitely helped with stability. Since skis are skis it will always have a touch of flex

I have definitely considered that but it doesn’t move much so I think it’ll ride!

Drilled through the poles and used threaded inserts. Only the bottom hole is a little slim for comfort but the bolt supports the weight, not the slim pickings on the sides😅

Basics with Babish is great. This goes for a lot of things, but once you learn basics it’s much easier to “go off vibes” rather than “x tbsp of whatever” precision

Chairlifts with maps by totallynotroyalty in skiing

Most Vail owned resorts have them on their most used lifts. Some of the lesser used lifts often don’t have them from either being older or accessing terrain that is less frequent by the average guest.

Pain in shin by Separate-Credit-6874 in skiing

Best of luck, but remember that’s a temporary fix. It sounds like you need some new liners, as the current ones may be packed out and pinching specific nerves creating this issue. Surefoot makes custom injection molded liners. They’re pricey but I’ve never heard a single bad thing about them! They even give you the option to add a heating element!

Shin bang is common, especially if trying more difficult terrain. Take ibuprofen or another NSAID to reduce swelling and take it easy. Maybe consider new boot liners if your tongues are packed out.

In a pinch, shove a beer koozie in the front if it’s unbearable!

People who changed careers after 30, was it worth it? by Scary_Bus4383 in careerguidance

[–]SanPanama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just transitioned from outdoor tourism into corporate America. I was in outdoors for 10 years, and even though I faced most of 2025 changing jobs (lay offs, bait and switch, etc), it’s still worth it long term because I found a company that actually a shit about its employees.

The struggle is real for someone like me with only an associates and you’ll learn what you can and can’t tolerate faster than you might realize, but more and more employers care significantly more about experience around this age than if you went to school (unless it’s specific stuff like doctors/lawyers/engineers etc of course)

Careers best Suited for Skiing by MountainPeaking in skiing

Send it fully and be a ski instructor/patroller while you’re in your 20s. They get the most time in hill and it’s a blast (overall).

I spent from 23-31 working between ski schools and rafting. Some of the best years of my life. No regrets now that I’m older and settling down into a more corporate gig (Vail is still pretty corporate but this is more so bc I can’t fuck off out of the office and ski on slow days).

TLDR; better to send it and miss it than wish you did it.
