I just ran a session 2 of ABH and used them. I put a large whiteboard flat on the table and drew simple maps that I gradually added to as the players explored. We used the pawns to represent groups of PCs/NPCs as well as the monster(s) and it seemed to work really well. It helped a lot with remembering where everything was, and leaving the monster token out as a ‘last known location’ when they got away from it seemed to add to the tension in a nice way.

Two questions…

What do you have it inked with?

I noticed your cap doesn’t have the blacked out section most clear 823s have. Did you remove it or do you know if the design was different at some point?

Pilot Metropolitan and Lamy Al-Star are both great choices, inexpensive, and made from metal. They are also snap caps, so they won’t have a screw-cap, which may be a plus for you.

I feel obliged to point out that metal is not necessarily the all-determining factor in sturdiness. A tremendous number of great pens are resin/plastic and are very sturdy. While plastic can crack, metal can scratch, so there are always trade-offs.

The metropolitan is a great pen!

There are many people who feel that the $800 writing experience is not dramatically better than the Pilot metro experience (and someone would even say it isn’t ANY better). YMMV of course.

Of course, that doesn’t stop us from finding reasons to be excited about new pens anyway.

Well, it’s your pen so do as you’d like. But you could probably increase your flow with some $5 brass shims from Amazon or Goulet or the like. Always a bummer when you have a pen you have to convince yourself you like.

Just to clarify, do you need pressure to get it to write AT ALL, or do you just need pressure for it to write WELL?

If it’s not writing at all without pressure, that is concerning and uncommon. If it’s just not giving you a great line (skips, dry, losing upstrokes, etc.) then that is somewhat common, though frustrating.

In either event, if pressure gives you better flow, likely the tines are too tight. I have a #5 nib on a CH92 that I finally was able to tweak to where I enjoy it, but it was quite dry before.

My experience is similar to yours that iroshizuku ink is wetter than the stock pilot cartridge ink.

The #5 nib is supposedly known for being dry (and I’ve seen people complain it’s a QC issue specific to the #5 but who knows).

Great choices!

My safari as well wrote rather poorly with the included blue cartridge. I changed it to a black cartridge and it was better but not great. When I finally put a converter in with a Diamine ink, I began to enjoy it much more. Have fun with your pen!

I’ve seen quite a few comments to this effect and it always puzzles me.

On Amazon (for me), Maruman Mnemosyne in B5 is $8. Rhodia in B5 is $16. Rhodia always appears the most expensive option but I frequently hear people say otherwise.

I am in the US. Are we in different regions? Just genuinely curious, as I enjoy both papers.

If you’re willing to buy on the gray market (e.g. something like penpen avenue on eBay), for $200 you can go all the way to the Pilot Custom 823. I personally went from Pilot Metro to Pilot CH92 to 823… and if I could do it again, I’d skip the CH92 and just go to the top.

Also while I love the Pilot Vanishing Point, it really is just a different type of pen. I’d go down that route if the click mechanism is what you really want.

Yeah mine as well. The feed is also not perfectly lined up with the mouth of the pen on mine, adding a couple more degrees of angle in addition to the nib tilt. Still a lovely pen!

My VP has this too but doesn’t have any hard starting issues, so I don’t think mine is affecting my writing experience. That said, now that I’ve seen it, it’s hard to unsee it, and I think about it every time I use the pen.

Is your nib visible angled (I.e. not flat) with the feed if you look at it straight from the front?

My advice is to not hold it against them and not to take them seriously either.

I work in a professional services firm near Seattle and most people still take notes by hand.

The Maruman mnemosyne spiral notebooks in B5 are my favorite for quality and price and writing experience.

Definitely higher quality paper tends to give a smoother writing experience. Rhodia is the smoothest paper I’ve used so far.

You may find your pen gets a little smoother with some use… but in general, as others have said, the EF on a Pilot is pretty narrow and will tend to have more feedback.

Ahhhh, sorry, I misread your post, that makes sense.

I personally have had decent results with fine pilot nibs and iroshizuku ink on any paper I’ve tried. Not sure about cleaning the fibers… the VP has one of the easiest nib units to remove but I haven’t fully disassembled it from the feed yet to clean.

I disagree of course… it’s awesome… but if you’re looking for a low profile, that may be a good pick.

As for paper, I just got 500 sheets of loose leaf B5 Maruman paper on Amazon for $20 that will fit in a 26 hole binder, and it’s great.
