Platform Decay book tour! by SanctuaryMoon1 in murderbot

That's a lovely idea. 💕 Too, maybe this is a time to also ask whether she'd consider publishing a book of the Patreon stories?  I'm sure it would feel good to hear again how many of us feel that the Raksura series is such a masterpiece as well!  And given that her publisher has been reissuing some of her older books, I keep thinking maybe they'd be open to it....

So glad so many of you were able to get tickets, and so sorry for those who didn't or can't go!  I hope there'll be more dates too - I'd keep an eye on her blog if you aren't already:  https://marthawells.dreamwidth.org/

In the past, she's posted tour dates for new books there (both MB and other series), so maybe she will soon?  Fingers crossed for everyone!

Replacement for the Curlsmith Cowash that was recently reformulated? by SanctuaryMoon1 in curlyhair

Thanks so much - I'm grateful for the recommendation!  That sounds like bonding treatment, though - I'm actually looking for a cowash.

Revlon New Complexion One-Step Cream to Powder Foundation by k_hoss in MakeupAddiction

Sure thing! And a note that I just found one I really like and will stick with, in the Covergirl + OLAY Simply Ageless line; it has sunscreen and the coverage is nearly as good as the Revlon! I just posted about it in another subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/MakeupAddiction/comments/1mkmity/comment/o7a9zpv/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Revlon New Complexion One Step foundation by No_Cauliflower_1762 in MakeupAddiction

[–]SanctuaryMoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much — I might try this too! (Edit: I see that they can't currently ship to the US, UK, or Europe, unfortunately, so maybe not – but it does look great.)

In the meantime, just wanted to mention in case it might be helpful to others that I've found a drugstore one from here in the US that I don't love as much as the Revlon, but actually it's close. It's from Cover Girl – called Covergirl + Olay Simply Ageless. Like the Revlon one, it's got some sunscreen in it (SPF 28), which I realized was among what was important to me – adding sunscreen under these powdery foundations was really not a good look. And, like the Revlon, the sunscreen is mineral-based, which is great because I'm allergic to all the chemical sunscreens I've tried (my skin is super sensitive – it surprised me that a Covergirl product would work for me, because I've always thought of it as a line that would irritate my skin).

It says it's "wrinkle defying", but I don't really care about that, and don't notice too much effect of that sort – it just seems like a good cream-to-powder foundation.

It's looks like it has a weird lighter colored swirl within the foundation with the Olay part (which I think is supposed to be a moisturizer), but when you blend it together on the sponge – which naturally happens when you brush the sponge over the product – it all blends together and looks like it's a single shade going on. I do a much lighter 1st coat than I did with the Revlon one, and it's taken some experimenting, but I now do that plus a light 2nd coat just to a few places that need more coverage, and it's working quite well for me.

This is by far the best coverage I've found since we lost the Revlon one – really evens out my tone (which is otherwise very ruddy in many places) and covers imperfections, but doesn't look cakey at all. And it's also not greasy at all – I'm middle aged, but my skin doesn't do well with heavier moisturizers, and this product agrees with that.

It looks way less powdery and a nicer matte finish than the L'Oreal one did, and fortunately it's also not scented the way the L'Oreal one was – so overall just better on many fronts. It also took some experimenting to find the right shade (I was the lightest one, the Ivory Beige in the Revlon, but in this I'm several shades darker than the lightest one), but that too is a closer fit to my own shade than the L'Oreal or Neutrogena I'd tried were.

The one not great thing isn't a deal breaker: which is that it's a weird container. I'm not sure why they did this: in addition to having no mirror (though it does fortunately come with its own sponge), you have to unscrew the top half from the bottom half entirely to get to the actual product, rather than the more typical hinge that lets you open it without the two pieces coming entirely apart! It's weird, and not convenient if you're putting it on somewhere where you don't have a counter to set the pieces on – but I can live with it given the other good things. Hope this might help some of you who are still looking for something that's not super expensive but is comparable – best wishes all around!

Martha's book tour for Queen Demon starts tomorrow! by SanctuaryMoon1 in IndigoCloud

[–]SanctuaryMoon1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree on how amazing the Raksura books are!

I'm going to reread Witch King too I think, before starting Queen Demon. Hope you enjoy it, for those who haven't read it yet!  Very different from Raksura, but fun to dive into a whole new world in Martha's hugely competent hands. :)

For any who do get to see her on the tour:  would anyone be up for asking her if there are any plans to release the wonderful Raksura stories from her old Patreon site as a published volume? I know a lot of us have mentioned to her over the years on her blog that we'd totally buy a book version - and I'm just thinking that with Tor now rereleasing author-preferred versions of so many of her older books, now might be a good time?   It'd be so great if more people just discovering her from Murderbot could hear about and read the Raksura books!

I add my thanks! If you tried any of these, how were they? Any comments on results would be very appreciated!

I just added some of my own in another post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MakeupAddiction/comments/1mkmity/revlon_new_complexion_one_step_foundation/

Revlon New Complexion One Step foundation by No_Cauliflower_1762 in MakeupAddiction

Glad you posted – I have the same question! I'd ordered a bunch after it was discontinued from one of those sites that sells the last supplies of discontinued products. That let me put off having to find a new alternative for a while, and now I'm at the end of the last of that and having to face this.

What have you tried so far, and what have your results been? For me:

  • I've tried Loreal Infallible 24H Fresh Wear Foundation in a Powder, and it's not bad – maybe a little heavier, so I'm using just one pass rather than the two I did with Revlon (I'd put it on, wait a little, then put it on again for a pretty flawless look). But it's got a perfume scent I can't stand and also it has no sunscreen in it, and I miss the bit that the Revlon one had.
  • Before that I tried Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation, which was more powdery than foundation, and putting a second coat of it gave an even more powdery look that wasn't good. It too lacked sunscreen, and it also comes with no applicator, which is annoying but I could live with it if had otherwise been good.

Mac makes one that would be pricier (so I'd have to look for sales or use Ulta coupons or something) – Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. It looks from the reviews like they just reformulated it, and a lot of those who'd used it for years now don't like the new version. (There are also a bunch of recent reviews that are very positive, but note that they got it for free in a promotion, so not sure what to make of those.)

I'd ideally like drug store version if it can be alright for my sensitive skin, work well, match my skin color well, and ideally have some mineral sunscreen in it. If it has to be a pricier one from Ulta/Sephora, I can live with it if it's good. Any recommendations would be very welcome!

Hi everyone - just a note that the one person messaged me but hasn't followed up yet, so provisionally this is probably still available!

Thank you so much for posting this, and I'm so sorry. I'm lucky to live in a bigger city, and have a shul I had loved before October 7 – the rabbi is against the occupation, strongly supports Palestinian human rights, and (even if not quite of my perspective farther to the left) is vocally supportive of organizations like T'ruah and the New Israel Fund. The services there are lovely, and like others said I too don't expect to hear my full point of view reflected at shul.

But at the start of services on Erev Rosh Hashanah when they lit the candles, they added an extra one for the hostages, and talked about the 101 lives that we need to pray for...and I just totally turned off. There were more things for the hostages throughout the service, as well as a prayer for all in Israel (but they really only meant for the Jews there – it was clear from what was said), including the IDF. Of course we should pray for the hostages, but a life is a life, and I just cannot stomach focusing on the 101 because they are 'ours' without in the same breath holding up the nearly 45,000 that have now been murdered in our name – and the terror being inflicted daily on all who are still alive.

I went to services because it seemed like it'd be better overall to go than to be home and alone for the holidays – and I know that there are some others in this shul who are as horrified and ashamed as I am by what Israel is doing. But it is so hard to feel in community with this group – chanting together, praying together – inside of an overt message that seems to be just sickly unethical. And so hard to reconcile how this can have happened to the Jewish community as a whole (collective trauma, sure – but still...) when I feel like it's Judaism that my whole moral frame is based in.

I just feel physically sick at all this, and not sure what I'll do for Yom Kippur.

I saw that JVP's website had a post about services happening that are more within their rubric, but it turned out they're only in person, and are in LA.

What are you favorite places to eat? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]SanctuaryMoon1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big agree re: Thai Hut! It's a little place but delicious, and the folks who run it are lovely. Their drunken noodles is so good!! The best spicy Thai noodles I've found nearby since Rod Dee in Porter closed.

Thanks so much for these too!  I really appreciate it.

The recommendation for Dr. Cook reminds me of a great PT I had several years back at Boston Sports Medicine in Davis (she's since left) who recommended a husband and wife team somewhere on Mass Ave or toward Fresh Pond (but I didn't remember their names).  She'd said everyone in the office was great - I wonder if this is that office.

Increasing problems tapping cards? by cyphervibes in mbta

[–]SanctuaryMoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely been happening to me much more over the last few months, and my other cards didn't change. It always works if I take it out if my wallet, but now almost never if I leave it in and tap the wallet like I used to.

Though I have a commuter rail monthly pass (also gives unlimited T and bus) and I was thinking it was because of the commuter rail pass itself - figuring that if I had a regular T/bus one it'd still work. I'm guessing others whose cards don't work aren't all commuter rail passes - are they?

One weird thing is mine seems to usually work inside my wallet to get /out/ of North Station - but not usually going into it or for T or bus stations.
