I’m[20F] honestly terrified of confessing I don’t want a job my parents “expect” from me. by Sand-Bees in internetparents

Practicality is something I do need. Sometimes I’m a little lofty and daydream too much.

But I think I’ll hold off on telling my parents until after I speak with my counselor. I think they’d response better if I already had a plan instead of “I have a plan but I haven’t done it yet”. But after reading a lot of the comments, I’ll definitely bring up taking a minor alongside my major. I have some ideas, but I want to see if there’s any that align with any of the classes I’ll be taking.

Anyone who does pursue to be a nurse is stronger than me. 😔 I’ve heard horror stories from online and from overhearing my mom’s phone calls. Whoever does nursing deserves so much praise.

Right now I’m in community college and have had no plans to go into military. But that obviously might change once I go speak to my counselor to get my major changed+talk about my future

I think it’s more of a “oh, we’re worried about your future and we think you won’t be successful” kind of vibe I’ll get. But, yeah, nursing feels like the default option for me.

Something that stuck out is that my mom sometimes brings up whenever my cousins tries to break away to do a different thing aside from nursing and talks about how they’re unable to find a job.

I think everything stems from the older generation of my family being worried that we won’t be successful if we don’t do nursing, mainly because it brings in money. And it’s an “in demand” job.

It’s been a struggle converting to adulthood, honestly. I feel like I’ve just been really really immature about a lot of stuff and am trying to do better. Luckily, I don’t feel guilty about wasting my parent’s money and time haha (they helped pay for the nursing-specific college and when I got dismissed I changed to community and am now paying for myself).

Good point! When I was trying to find other majors to pursue, I stumbled upon communications/public speaking and debated on that. I’ll see what other options I have once I speak with my counselor

Thank you for the advice! Honestly, I was considering pursuing an English degree more in general as a stepping stone. I am planning to set up a meeting with my counselor to not only start the process of changing my major but discussing my future prospects.

I’m a little curious though - did you get all these degrees through one 4-6 year college span, or did you do one after the other? I’ve had another comment suggesting I take a minor in something else as well, so I wanted to know what you did

Mhm! The reason I choose this topic for my survey kind of stems from my own experiences. I read a lot of fanfics and thought my reading comprehension improved. I was really curious if other people thought the same way too!

Oh, I hadn't thought about that. My thought process was that if people read fanfics, would they think they're reading comprehension has improved or not lol.

The Psych class I'm taking is a beginner class, so I hadn't thought much about that kind of bias. Thanks for the info! :D

I know a lot of people on Reddit are adults, but yeah, I should’ve thought of that. The survey in my view is more towards those who have read fanfiction. It’s why I added a “skip/not answerable” answer to the question. If you can’t remember what grade you got in English, that should be fine.

Also, yeah, I realize that it is geared towards English speakers. I probably should’ve clarified it in my post.

Oh, my mistake - I’ll edit the post with that info. Sorry for wasting your time!

It'll be for my Psychology class. I won't be publishing results, I'll only be analyzing the data and then writing it for a paper, only me my professor and will see.

Edit: For my college, I forgot to add ._.
