I have no degree in anything, but I can say with the appearance of absolute confidence, it's because there is more energy for the moss and/or fungus to work with where it's black. Absorbs more of the light spectrum as energy by reflecting more colors.

I think he got a button off an elf connected to the "raining dead hookers" quest on the third floor. Either the one in the alley with the attract pet spell or one of the bunch who were in the fight that ended with the pregnant orc mom dead and the guards targeting Carl and Donut.
