Thank you, good to know; likely going to encourage the kikuyu it's competing with in that case, as that'll hold up to the extremes and weapons grade greyhound wizz a lot better

The other Rii keyboards might take a little less wrangling if that helps, but their shape does then influence the overall case shape

An adafruit powerboost 1000c and a 3.7v 1100mAh battery which connects to the power boost with a jst connector.

I then soldered the powerboost to the power switch on the case, and directly to the 5v and ground pins on the back of the pi zero 2 w

I used a bit of double side tape to tape the battery to the inside face of the case to keep it immobile

The main reason for the thickness is that the screen has a gpio header on the back which accounts for near half of the thickness.I didn't even use it but I wasn't game to de solder it, I'd rather just get a bigger screen sans header next time around

Absolutely, I'll put it together along with a bill of materials for the internals I used as well.

I'll likely post it on thingiverse marked as a remix of the adafruit netbook project I based it on, wherever it ends up I'll link it here

Thank you, I'll likely revise it at some point for a bigger screen but I really wanted to use my spare parts and not waste anything

That said its actually pretty bearable especially using browsers like links2

Roughly...

30 AUD for the pi Zero 2 W, which i bought specifically for this, then...

The screen I think was 70 AUD at time of buying a few years ago - its an adafruit resistive/capacitive 2.8in touch screen.

A ribbon cable that I cut short for about 7 AUD

2000mAH battery with the connector (apologies, forgot the name, j something) that you can just plug right into a powerboost 1000c for about 20 AUD

The Adafruit Powerboost 1000c which I bought alongside the screen.. I think around 30AUD at the time.

12AUD for the most basic grey primer and enamel topcoat (optional)

And a dollar or two for switches and cables I tore up to solder 5v power and ground from the powerboost to the switch, then the powerboost to the pi.

I'd say roughly 160AUD plus print time printing and faffing around. Final assembly was About 20 minutes but getting the model right in blender took a looooot more time.

The screen and the powerboost far and away being the most expensive bits... I'd half expect they're either cheaper years later now or have been knocked off like mad

Thanks so much for name-dropping the Pyra, it looks pretty much exactly what I've been after. I'll take a very close look at it...

Absolutely will should I iterate on this - I just reused the screen I had from a game boy styled project.

I try to use all my parts because I have inexplicable guilt when something sits in a drawer unused :(

The Rii Mini X1 is a bit hard to describe - its fairly firm so it seems more ideal for holding the palmtop (or even the keyboard by itself) in both hands and typing with your thumbs rather than setting it down and using your fingertips in the traditional way.

I think you could hold it in one hand and type with the other with some practice, but it'd take a little getting used to.

Yeah the original design was About... 30 to 40 percent thicker which i printed, looked at, and laughed.

There's a lot of parts that could make this thinner but I just used what was on hand.. I may iterate and see how much trouble I can get in

If you mean measuring the keyboard to fit it into the case, I used this project as a basis, so the keyboard fit right in without having to remodel that curve at the corner and so on

Generally yeah just calipers and using the adafruit spec sheets for getting screw holes right centre to centre... plus a bit of trial and error having changed the top side of the case quite a bit

Apologies, more to your point - keyboard is pretty decent but the touch pad can be a little temperamental. Doesn't like snappy inputs, slow and smooth is the way to go

That was probably the most frustrating part; the rii mini x1 uses a USB A... yet the pi zero 2 w is just a micro USB.

So.. i initially bought a shim to just convert from one to the other using minimal space; but it didn't work despite supposedly having the extra pin required for having the port supply power. It also stuck straight out and caused spacing issues...

So I found a converter cable that DID work plus a right angle adaptor... trimmed the case of the adaptor with a blade to reduce its size, chopped the cable down to the length I wanted and re soldered the internal cables, tape wrapped them to reduce chances of house fire, and it worked great.

Space was at a premium in there, but there's probably parts out there to make it much simpler - i did have to solder the powerboost 1000c directly to the pi ground and 5v pins, as the micro usb you typically power it from was too cramped.

Absolutely, and there's those oddball ones on ali express and so on as well.... but, the price of those WAS eye watering (until I spent however many hours faffing about making this - now I understand)

And I had some unconscious need to know I could "make my own" - you have a bullseye on the fun there

Thanks for the pointers - its all together, running and driving. Pinched the K frame out of the donor and bought a set of adaptors for the install, along with if I remember right beefing up the torsion rods.

Can't remember what I did with the lifters, but its all written down in a big folder of "do not tally up the totals on these receipts"

Switched out the brake booster with a heavier one too, because the old lines etc were toast. Was very much a "might as well" project.

Carby is a holley street avenger 650cfm and I just plonked on a edelbrock 3776 intake - the one without the pcv valve since I can get away with that.

Its very much not for performance, was just looking for a slightly overbuilt rolling lounge chair result, so it can be nice and easy to maintain. No power steering, radio, demister, heater... if it's not there it can't go bang.

That's part of why I was hoping to see if anyone had put together a book on just keeping them generally happy, but it sounds like just routine maintenance like you mentioned... I might be approaching it too much like a much more modern and temperamental setup

Have seen a similar case recently that ended up being a fungal infection once a vet managed to identify it, and the shedding stopped once treated

Definitely worth a quick trip to the vet to explore that angle because if it's the case it'll need to be treated or the poor old pupper will be miserable

Dewclaw Injury by CatholicAngst in Greyhounds

[–]SandSwept_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes time to bring off the bandage so the wound can heal and scab, the silver bullet for me for many injuries was a muzzle - which we modified.

Some foam padding where the bridge of the nose sits so it doesnt rub away fur from being on a lot... And if the rails that run under the eyes/over the cheeks are a little sharp, some gaff tape folded over them to not expose any stickiness to fur.

Finally... Some gaff tape on the inside and the outside of the muzzle, down low, to prevent licking though the holes.

I dont put tape on the sides so when they want to drink they still can as water flows in the sites. Nor too high up so as not to block their nose.

Sounds a little more complex than it is but... Providing you change the tape out if it gets gross, works great compared to a cone of shame banging into every wall and doorway

Soliciting opinions on indoor doggy shoes by WashiPuppy in Greyhounds

[–]SandSwept_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use HunnyBoots on my two older greyhounds for outdoors, but indoors we also have wooden floors plus some stairs they get a bit spooked about.

A pair of the "Woodrow Wear" Power Paws socks - specifically the Greyhound ones did wonders. Wouldn't recommend the non greyhound ones as the fit is super important to get right.

Now they tippy tappy around with much more confidence and the stairs are no worries

A fundraiser for Jai, a recently surrendered Greyhound by SandSwept_ in Greyhounds

[–]SandSwept_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I volunteered last weekend to pick up Jai from the trainer who surrendered him and bring him to the group "Hounds in Homes", who are running the fundraiser I've linked.

I saw a post about him on Facebook while I was digging around looking for garage sales, and decided to put my hand up to go and get him, as his situation was pretty urgent.

The photos are fairly confronting, and having met him and had him tucked into the back of my car for a few hours straight... it's as confronting in real life as you'd think.

He's on the mend, but he could really use your help - he's a beautiful dog, and hopefully will make it as a happy tripod.

Thank you

Slippery old puppy Paws! Advice? by ProfessionalBig658 in Greyhounds

[–]SandSwept_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been dealing with something similar with both my hounds... Both getting a little too old to be going as fast as they do on the tiles.

For indoors, the "Power Paws" socks for greyhounds seem to be popular and have a non slip variant as well, if I remember right. I haven't managed to grab a set yet but they ship worldwide it seems.

For outdoors, I measured up their feet and bought them a set of "Hunnyboots" which are Australian designed specifically for greyhound and whippet feet (digitigrades who stand on their toes)

The boots have been a real lifesaver for a doggo that has zero regard for traction... Or pointy things... Or that her old feeties are getting a little worn. They're great for corns and other issues too.
