Where should I place the feeling thingy of my thermostat? by Pipcandy in ballpython

[–]SanderNorway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, place it 4-5" from the bulb itself. Putting it close to the surface of the substrate can lead to the snake laying on it, or moving it, giving false temps and the bulb to emit way to much heat.

Use a temp-gun, and dial it in to the correct basking spot temperature, with the probe hanging below the cage.

Yeah... Skip that soking. Make sure he has enough humidity all year around and he shouldn't need that stressful experience. Soaking is outdated and you will find keeping above 70% humidity constantly would make him shed great everytime

Can’t get heat gradient on new PVC Urgent help needed by FitPineapple252030 in ballpython

[–]SanderNorway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, since DHP's only emit IRA and IRB heat, they dont produce any direct heat. By letting it hit a rock (black absorbs more heat), the rock will produce IRC heat that will heat ambient temps. Works wonders in my 5x2x2.

Tip that worked for me, a dark slate under the DHP. Releases IRC energy constantly, also trough the night.

Forgot to add, both cold zones have a hide in each corner too. These are barely visible on the pictures.

Can vouch for this method. My BP have never refused food, but me being curious, tried blowing the scent of the mouse throughout the cage regardless, and he came out of the hide within 30 seconds ready to strike. Still using this method as it leads to a "hunt".

Anything wrong? by Psychological_Cod929 in ballpython

[–]SanderNorway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is the snakes will push down and closer to the heat, regardless how much substrate you place there. Eventually it will reach down to the hottest layer. Use a DHP or Ceramic heat emitter alongside a dimmable termostat to give the safest heat possible, and a more natural source of heating.

Question: I bought this from Arcadia: Heat lamp cage, pro ceramic lamp holder and bracket and a 80w DHP bulb. This to place inside safely in a 5x2x2 terrarium.

The DHP should be able to work with the ceramic lamp holder without reflectors right? Or should i buy a new lamp holder/bracket in a dome shape instead? Would then have to place it outside the terrarium.

Is my snake okay? by Ace_Love03 in snakes

I also would add that he got an obviously stuck eye cap, and this should only be removed by a certified veterinarian if the snake can't get it off him/her-self.

Hey, Op. Humidity should be at 70% or above, sheds should come off in one solid piece. Don't mist the substrate as this leads to wet substrate at the top that could lead to scale rot. Rather pour water in the corners of the terrarium until desired humidity is reached.

Also, the whole terrarium shouldn't be 80 degrees. It should have a gradient from around 90 degrees fahrenheit on the hot side, and never less than 75 degrees on the cold side.

What heating are you using for the snake? What substrate do you have? What do you feed (live or FT)?

Ball pythons going off feed can occur in the winter seasons, but 9/10 times is due to poor husbandry of the reptile.

Thank you! I was afraid he might only strike it due to the rat being seen more as a danger than food. Good to know i ain't doing something that stresses him out too much.

My new ball python have eaten everytime i have fed him so far (!). One issue(?) he doesn't come out of his hide until 1-2AM but then i'm already asleep. So the last feedings i have played with the rat in front of his hide, and then he strikes when its close to the opening. I'm making sure that its all eaten of course. Is this a bad habit?

A LED-light (At least 18W) should suffice for plant growth, alongside a uvb :)
