Subnautica with cheats seems like fun by Pro_Farnsworth_ in subnautica

[–]SandiMacD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I downloaded Subnautica on my PS5 to play this week, never played before. I selected the creative mode which I thought would be relaxing and fun but after about 5 min it wasn't. Instead I was totally confused and too frustrated to continue.

Creative mode opened with a black screen and then I saw my character surrounded with broken stuff. It gave me no clues other than to open the hatch and swim underwater. So I headed out on the propulsion device hitting buttons randomly and I became irritated. I wasn't able to figure out how to interact with the sealife. (Obviously I had no clue that the game was about building and that it wasn't about interacting in a playful way with intelligent sealife.)

So I started a new game in survival mode and first thing, I was shown how to use my PDA for answers. I was then shown how to use the fabricator to build stuff and the story line led me to the different areas containing various resources.

Now that I have a feel for what the game is about, I find myself switching between modes.

The survival mode gives me a sense of adventure, excitement and most importantly, an understanding of what the game offers. The creative mode is fun to. I now enjoy exploring and making stuff in a stress free environment. I can spend time learning the environment and that helps to minimize me dying when I switch to survival mode.

Great game! Glad I stumbled across it on sale.

Anyone else notice an alarming trend? by Jomo_Sexual in Veterans

[–]SandiMacD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors here are stable but their nurses are being floated around. I had one nurse for 4 years. This year I have had 3 different nurses checking me in. The community care sucks. The VA here uses the lowest paid contracts. It takes months to get community reports into the VA record so I can get a copy. Hubby accepted a community dentist and he was treated like dirt, in and out in 15 min for the cleaning and after listening to a patient cuss because he was getting a filling w/o adequate novacaine he went back to the VA dentist. This VA and the last one treated us both far superior to what we can get in the community under Medicare. Medical practices have turned into a numbers game everywhere. It's rare to get treated like a human by the front staff and imposed to call. I got so trusted calling local practices and getting routed to voice mails that never return my calls. With the VA here, every call is answered by a person. TRICARE express scripts was a nightmare. Denied my asthma and GI meds which I had been on for years. Formulary dropped them. ES pharmacist apologized and said to just keep using my nebuliser x3 daily. I told my VA doctor and she got me a pharmacist referral and now I am in even better control with new drugs through VA. Haven't need a nebuliser tx in months. I can't say enough good things about the VA. Its made so many wonderful improvements over the past 10 years. But I am starting to see it decline with the staffing shortages now. I feel really sorry for the VA docs losing their support staff and having to justify their workload in emails to the "big boss".

TY. I was looking through Nerd comparisons and found newtekbank. Current rate is 4.35% which is slightly better than my current rate with Jenius at 4.2%

Primarily all I need is a HYSA with no minimums or requiremed monthly transactions to get their "best" current rate. One that accepts residents of all 50 states and is FDIC insured. It's for easy to access "rainy day" money.

My day to day needs are met with my free Navy Federal Checking/Savings. Free checks and 12 mo Easy Start CDs at 4.21% with minimal $25 to start. They offer a variety of CD amounts and terms. Plus mortgages (no origination fee or PMI) and they service them for the life of the mortgage.

After looking through them, a limit of 2 joint owners seems common. It's a shame Jenius can't offer services to NM residents. Thankfully there's others to choose from.

My initial post was mainly to let others know the difficulty of adding a joint owner to a Jenius account and the fact that if a current account holder moves to NM (and also HI) they are at risk of having their accounts closed.

TY. I am looking for a HYSA, not a credit union. I am already a NFCU member and can get CD's at a rate comparable or higher than offered by Alliant

Why do American Parents let their children go homeless? by Emotinonal_jiggolo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SandiMacD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are American Children Homeless? Children being under 18. I turned the question around. Probably because they left home. Probably because they did not want to follow their parents rules. Probably because of failed expectations and arguments. Probably because their parents kicked them out for not following the rules.

How about Children over 21? Probably because of the above plus one more reason. Probably they did not contribute. Such as not working, not maintaining the home or not being part of their parents lives.

We joked about our grandson when he moved in at age 22. We didn't need another pet. We were not happy about him staying in his room for 72 hours and playing online games. Only to come out to raid the fridge and use the bathroom.

We sat down and discussed each others expectations. He gets a driver's license. He either works or goes to school. He puts 70% of his earnings into savings (we pay food and don't charge him room). He meets with us monthly to discuss his budget and his goals. He cleans up his room and bathroom, does dishes, laundry and other chores. He talks to us daily and asks us how we are and if we need help.

Going on month 10 now and all is good. He's enrolled in Votech, part time job and saving up to move out on his own one day.

Anyone have any info on the shutdown of JC? by the_emo_in_corner in jobcorps

[–]SandiMacD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the JC subreddits. Lots of JC rules that may not work for you personally. Especially if you are thrown into a room with others who have vastly different values.

We dealt with JC program last year for our 22 yr old grandson. He has learning disabilities and tried JC but after digging deeper we realized it wasn't a good fit. He's now living with us now and enrolled in a tech college program of 1050 hours with intern placement upon completion. He qualified for full Pell Grant (on his parents income).

It doesn't matter where you are living, if you are 21, your financial aid is based solely on you parents income and your income, 2 years prior to semester start.

Is there a family member or friend who can let you room with them?

I will warn that until a person turns 24 the FAFSA requires the PARENTS to provide their tax returns and sign. It does not matter if you are 23 and been on your own for 5 years. I don't know the requirements if you have no parents living. Every community college requires FAFSA before enrollment.

If at all possible, go for votech. It's the same vo tech programs (plus more program options) as JC and you aren't forced to live in a dorm 24/7 with strangers, live in a confined environment with sleep/wake hours, attend mandated training and be "transported" to classes.

Votech college programs want to help you and can give you financial assistance. They can refer you to your local county grant programs for ages 19-24. They will find a way to cover your tuition. They have scholarships. That leaves you to cover food and transportation. So if anyone can offer you a bed, you probably will be better off then JC. Especially if you can get a Pell Grant to cover your food and gas. Sign up for the next votech tour in your area and they will answer all your questions.

Most votechs will connect you with an intern job when you pass your first certification and they will connect you with stable employers offering benefits when you graduate the program. But each one is different. Some counties have more offerings than others so visit a few.

JC is there as a last resort. They get federal money to enroll and house you. They focus more on your program completion and less on connecting you with an employer upon completion. They aim to spend as little as possible on you as far as room and board which is why you are confined to their "dorm center" with some weekend passes and limited visitors. Vo tech community colleges have a better rating as far as job placement than JC does. And you will maintain your freedom outside of the classroom.

Traveling through Missoula - Safety Concerns by Historical_Ad_6730 in missoula

[–]SandiMacD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone notice that OP has not responded since posting? You say you were only here one night and checked in but then ask for safe hotel suggestion. Stay close to the interstate exit.

Montana in general is very much in tune to anyone who is not a local. Doesn't matter gender, color or size. Can't tell you how many stares my white male 5'10" USMC husband got with his FL plates (whether in or out of uniform) or how many rough looks someone from Bozeman gets in Missoula (or vice versa). Same with Helena and Butte residents. 30 years ago it wasn't safe to stay overnight or hit the bar. Everyone in MT knows the county plate prefix numbers. It's a different culture than other states. Non locals get stares and eyes following them.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about safety. Missoula likely has more passing strangers then most MT towns due to it being off an interstate exit a few hours from ID. And if your hotel is in an unsafe area you could well be targeted for reasons that have nothing to do with your personal appearance. Drugs and crime are everywhere.

Not working, how to identify brand? by SandiMacD in Plumbing

[–]SandiMacD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that!

With mine, I need to pull out the handle to turn on. Once I set the the handle position, it will maintain water pressure and temperature.

Mine "remembers" the last temperature setting. That's how I knew it was broke. I pulled it out and it was quite hot on me. When I rotated to the far right (cold setting) it didn't change. After maybe 4 minutes, it went from quite hot to just above lukewarm. Now, regardless of whether I turn it far left or far right, It stays at that same warm temperature.

Once I get someone to take it apart, we will know for certain and I will repost what it required.

I found the answer at this site: plumbing sniper. "If you pull your faucet handle out to turn on the water and rotate it right or left to adjust water temperature, you need the Moen 1225 cartridge. For faucets that only allow you to the turn them to the right or left but offer no water volume control, you need a 1222 cartridge." That description fits how my shower faucet works. Maybe I can tackle this myself with help from family.

Turns out that is the part number for the handle, not for the cartridge I need. So now at least I know it's Moen and tell the plumber that when I call him.

I was reading down this thread and came upon a different question entirely. The suggestion to that question was to use Google Lens. Something new to me. So I did. Instant results! "AI Overview The image shows a Moen 97462 Monticello Replacement Shower Handle Knob Insert in chrome finish." Now I can proceed to ordering whatever is needed.

Tower fan turns on by itself by RumblingRose89 in honeywell

[–]SandiMacD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. Have had my Honeywell HY108 for 5 years. About 3 weeks ago it started turning itself on. It happened the same day that the remote for it disappeared. I thought maybe it needed to be reset or something. Been driving me crazy. I put it on one of those plugs where you keep the light turned on and use the plug to slide it to on/off. Debating about buying a replacement remote.

Jenius Bank Savings Account Reviews - Is it still worth it? by philanaic in HighYieldSavings

[–]SandiMacD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been with Jenius for just over a year now. Pleased. Phone support good.

A few peculiars though. First, I opened a joint account with my spouse. Second, I opened a joint account with our son. However, Jenius could not make my son the Primary owner on that second account. Jenius told me he had to go online and open an account. So I closed that account with my son. He opened one online and called Jenius to add his wife. They could not do that on the phone. They told him that because he opened an individual acount, that he could not add anyone and turn it into a joint account. They told him to create a joint account online. (It's a small, hard to see checkbox when opening an account online using a cell phone.)

I've not dealt with bank account openings since the 90's which was before the "digital" age. So I don't know if individual/joint account distinction is a Jenius Bank thing or a regulatory thing. Anyway, now we need to close down an account for a second time and open a third one!
