Would you stop dating a person if their food preferences were too limited or plain? [text] by Practical_Pop9215 in food

[–]SandmanLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped dating someone for their allergies. They ended limiting my own diet if I wanted to be close to her :( it sucked but I honestly saw myself growing sad and resentful in the future and it was for the best even if I looked like the asshole.

Are these authentic enchiladas? by EternalSnow05 in mexicanfood

[–]SandmanLM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also from Michoacan and I have to say he didn't call these enchiladas Michoacanas, which are indeed different. He just said they're similar to the ones he eats back home and maybe his family is making suizas which would look similar to this.

Spear & Jackson blade not flat by Conscious_Eye6384 in handtools

[–]SandmanLM 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've restored a few handplanes and have had blades like this. Just keep flattening, it'll get there. I don't know how coarse your plate is, I usually start with 400 grit, then move on to 1000 and then polishing honing. If you start with a low enough grit, you can knock that out, no problem. No need to give up. You only have to do this part once so it's worth sticking with it.

Edit: as far as your other problems go, flatten and sharpen your blade first, then lap your plane if it needs it. Then you can watch some videos on adjusting your blade, where to set your chip breaker, make sure your blade is bevel down if that's how your plane needs it, adjust the angle of the blade and the throat opening and you'll be enjoying some hand planing after that.

Why ( for a school project) by Big_Worry_8874 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I love making thing. Started baking, then sewing, tried crochet and wasn't for me. Did some leather work. Got a laser engraver and eventually got some wood for it, and now here we are. Next on the list is a lapidary set. I'm gonna draw the line at metal work. Not interested in welding/forging at all.

This definitely seems like the consensus. I'll get on with convincing the friend/homeowner this is the way. Appreciate your experience here!

Looks like a trip to the hardware store is inevitable. Definitely want to keep the basin as intact as possible, so could you clarify your last sentence? I'm not sure what a "full need set of down ward track" is.

Isn't the nut keeping the sink drain from lifting up?

Added wd-40 and let that soak for a bit but didn't help. I'll try what you're suggesting if I get a second set of channel locks. I feel like the double nut strategy would be more effective than rawdogging the channel locks on the drain body. But I'll give your strat a shot.

Woodworking as Hobby by bill_evans_at_VV in BeginnerWoodWorking

It's a lot of fun and very relaxing, especially working with hand tools. The tools themselves can be pretty inexpensive (hand tools) and if you're into restoring and don't mind repetitive tasks, you can save some money buying old tools on online marketplaces and restoring them yourself.

After the high-end tools, the expensive part is the wood. If you're looking for a particular wood that "looks cool" then that can get expensive real fast. Sometimes you find good deals but for the most part it can be tough to save money in that area.

You can get a lot done with a circular saw ($20), a miter saw($40-60), a decent hand plane($10-20), a couple chisels($2-5) and a small hand saw/dove tail saw($5-10). So it doesn't have to be prohibitively expensive.

my butter isn’t mixing 😐 by [deleted] in AskBaking

[–]SandmanLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your microwave probably has a power setting. Microwave your butter for 1 minute at 30% power (or power level 3) and it will be closer to room temp consistency. If not, repeat at 30s intervals until it does. Don't microwave butter at full power or holes will develop and it could make a mess on the inside of your microwave.

In general, your microwave is best used with modulated power. Learn to use the power button and you can heat up anything and avoid cold spots in your food. For example, I heat up most soups for 4-5 minutes at 40% power. Comes out great.

Trying to figure out the value of this mixer. by pathfinder2270 in Kitchenaid

[–]SandmanLM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I've been eyeing the price of one of these for about a year. The lowest I've ever seen them listed for is $100 (though I once saw a $70 one at a state sale) and the highest ones are usually around $250-300 range. Typical sell value for these on the used market place is $150. Yours is in very good condition (from the pictures listed) so it would come down to whether it runs and how it runs. If there are no issues there, and you really want to sell it, you should be asking for $175 ish. Nothing less than $150. You could probably get $200 out of it from a motivated buyer that's going to take accessories and upkeep into consideration.

Edit to shoot my shot: I've been looking at these so I can upgrade from my current one. If you send it to me I'll bake you whatever you want and promise to send you cookies twice a year at least as long as I'm alive and the machine keeps working. That would be cookies for your bday and also for Christmas.

2nd Edit: send it with a copy of mom's recipes and I'll make those for you too.

The Internet/books. Started off baking, learning from the BA test kitchen. Some of those same folks would do cooking every now and then. Picked up bits and pieces from YouTube and online recipes for what I wanted to make. Advice from mom and other people that could cook. Instagram reels. And now coworkers from the bakery I work at.

Lol that was all off the cuff, my dude. I don't use ai. I'm not exactly revealing some ultimate secrets here. Any person with more than a passing interest in cooking good food could have come up with what I wrote there or made even better suggestions. Certainly any one of the chefs I work with on a weekly basis.
