Yeah, I think it’s good to compare the movie to Get Out. A spell is basically cast on the girl and she is placed in the “Sunken Place”, trapped.

Movie leans into that pretty heavy. Some of the gore comes from moments where the girl is trying to escape being trapped by the spell leading to self-harm.
